If you were a fan of Mayor of Kingstown, you will like this show as well. Even the opening credits are similar in style and cinematography, guess that's a Taylor Sheridan trademark. Billy Bob Thornton delivers his grizzled, snarky, no nonsense lines with typical Billy Bob Thornton sarcasm. There's one scene in one of the first few episodes where Thornton's character gives a long speech about the necessity of petroleum in every area of our lives, which definitely sounds like propaganda written into the script the oil industry, but none of what he says is untrue. Kind of funny that the first few episodes are sponsored by the American petroleum Institute and feature ads showing oil and petroleum workers. Overall I think this is going to be a great show, the writing is great, the acting is great, and the characters are very human.
Couldn't even get through episode 2 because the writing is so terrible. They just use every cliche from every movie and TV show. I really don't understand how this show even stayed on the air for more than one season. The conflicts and relationships between characters are so transparent and have been so overdone that it is obvious the writers put no thought or effort or creativity into this show. While the concept of the show seemed interesting, by 2/3 of the way into the first episode I could tell this was not going to be good. I gave it an honest try though. I wish I could sit through it long enough to find out how it ends.
The show deals with tragedy, loss, family, friendship, and it does so in a funny and heartwarming way.. while the topic is serious and affects people everyday, the show approaches it with humanity and humor where appropriate, and with seriousness when it is needed. Questions of spirituality and religion are addressed head-on without being preachy or dogmatic. The characters are well developed and the casting and directing are top notch. We need more shows like this that are relatable and human and not just about sex or dysfunctional families.. I binged the entire season in one night, I just couldn't stop!
