Troll 2 (1990)
Great movie with 90s atmosphere
I think it's a great movie. And the 90s vibes make it even better nowadays. I think it's better than many movies that come out these days on different platforms. The story is entertaining, the acting is not that bad in my opinion, it's just very cliché for the 90s. The characters have clear personalities. The landscapes, etc., are really nice. The goblins are well made even if they do look a bit old-fashioned, we don't need crazy special effects and CGI for all movies, especially this one. I think it's a great movie and that it's perfect for a lighthearted movie night. It's also suitable for a family movie night.
Uranya (2006)
Highly recommended - very poetical
I loved the movie. I gave it "only" 9 because I would have liked a bit more background on certain characters and certain parts of the story to be more developed. Some parts were a bit long but nothing too bad, in any case, watch until the very end. It's a work which should be considered as a whole. The whole thing is like a big poem. I watched the movie on a famous streaming platform and the description of the movie was quite inaccurate. They focused on a less relevant part of the story. The movie turned out to be 100 times better than the description.
I know Greece, Greek culture and history quite well so I understand the movie very well which I think is important to enjoy the movie even more.
It's a wonderful movie for people love nostalgia, history, Greece, stories about feelings and how we evolve as humans. It's also a movie about dreams and broken dreams. I totally recommend it.
Turist (2014)
A poetic journey through the irony of life
Force Majeure is a cinematic masterpiece that delves deep into the human psyche, exploring the intricate layers of family dynamics, love, and life's inherent contradictions. This film is far from being a comedy; it's a thought-provoking exploration that compels viewers to reflect on their own lives and relationships.
The movie masterfully creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously heavy and sad, yet undeniably poetic. It's this juxtaposition that reminds us of the cruel ironies life often presents.
For those who have experienced bullying or emotional neglect, particularly in a manner similar to the husband's experience in the film, Force Majeure may resonate on a deeply personal level. It's important to approach this film with caution, as its themes and the manner in which they are presented can be triggering. I'm talking from experience.
However, this discomfort is not without purpose. The film does not shy away from showing us the uncomfortable truths about human nature and relationships. It forces us to confront our vulnerabilities, fears, and the often uncomfortable realities about love and familial bonds.
What makes force Majeure particularly striking is its refusal to provide easy answers or resolutions. Instead, it leaves us with a lingering sense of contemplation about our own lives, our decisions, and the nature of human resilience in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, it is not a film for those seeking light-hearted entertainment. It is a poignant, deeply moving cinematic experience . It's a must-watch for anyone willing to embark on a reflective journey into the complexities of human emotions and relationships.
Resident Alien (2021)
Very funny and well written
I am surprised because I had never heard of it and I was just watching random series and movies when I saw that. The description seemed fun but it's often the case, excellent descriptions but very bad movies and series. This time, it turned out to be completely different.
Alien Resident is very funny, well written and the actors are great. I was also very happy to see Terry O'Quinn who played John Locke in Lost. There's not much more to say, I just recommend anyone who likes aliens and comedies to watch it. The actors are excellent, the landscapes are beautiful, the story is well written, the characters are very well developed, this series has everything one can expect from a great series!
Le petit poucet (2011)
One of those so bad that's funny movies
The writing is not so good and the actors are not so great either. Some are even so bad that it's funny. The environment, the forest, the village and the house, is alright and cute. It does reflect Perrault's story quite well. The soundtrack is not bad and also conveys the incited emotions. The father, the ogre, the sons and the ogre's wives are really bad. Even if it were a theatre play, it still would be terrible. I'm still giving it three stars because I think there was a real effort in trying to make a good movie. The ogre and the father are the worst actors of the movie, they are ridiculously bad. Then, the orgre's daughters are also really bad and can't even play dead properly. The best actor as someone else said is maybe the corpse in town. The boys' mother isn't that bad either. To sum up, there isn't much more to say, it was just bad. It's a fun watch while doing something else that doesn't require to focus too much though.
Smile (2022)
Worth watching at least once
The actors are pretty good, especially the protagonist. The writing is also pretty good and realistic. The atmosphere corresponds to what one could expect from such a movie. The soundtrack is also quite good. There is just the right number of jumpscares that they don't get repetitive.
I think one can interpret the movie in several ways while not trying to explain all aspects of the movie. Some parts are more artistic and don't really contribute to the story.
There are only a few aspects of the movie which could have been improved but it's easier said than done.
All in all, I recommend watching this movie once but one won't remember it forever.
Poor Things (2023)
Missed opportunity, gratuitous / graphic content without depth
Poor Things, despite being lauded by critics and audiences alike, left me with mixed feelings that veer more towards disappointment than admiration. At first glance, the film captivates with its visually stunning cinematography, where vibrant color palettes and meticulously designed soundscapes breathe life into every scene. The landscapes, in particular, are a feast for the eyes, reminiscent of masterpieces hanging in an art gallery, showcasing the undeniable talent behind the camera.
Emma Stone, known for her versatility, delivers a commendable performance that initially anchors the narrative with a compelling presence. The film starts on a promising note, weaving intrigue and drama in a manner that piques interest. Unfortunately, this promising start soon gives way to a direction that I found increasingly difficult to appreciate.
As the story progresses, Poor Things takes a sharp turn into explicit territory, focusing heavily on sexual content to a point that feels excessive and, frankly, distasteful. The depiction of sex, while a legitimate narrative device when handled with care, overwhelms the plot, reducing what could have been a multifaceted story into a one-dimensional exploration of promiscuity. The transition of Emma Stone's character into prostitution marks a pivot where the storyline seems to lose its depth entirely, overshadowed by graphic scenes that leave little to the imagination.
More concerning is the film's approach to themes of empowerment and liberation through sex and prostitution. While cinema has the power to challenge and redefine societal norms, the portrayal in Poor Things feels misguided. It adopts a pseudofeminist lens that simplifies complex issues into questionable messages, especially considering the historical setting's lack of sexual health awareness and protections. This aspect is particularly jarring, not only for its anachronistic take on empowerment but also for the film's accessibility to audiences without a stricter age classification.
Comparatively, films like 'Ken Park' and 'Kids' utilize explicit content to underscore themes of despair, loss, and the harsh realities faced by their characters, making a poignant statement on youth and society. In contrast, Poor Things seems to miss the mark, opting for shock value over substantive commentary.
So, while Poor Things may dazzle with its visual artistry and boast a strong performance from Emma Stone, it ultimately falters under the weight of its own excess. The film's overreliance on sexual content not only detracts from its narrative potential but also undermines the serious exploration of its themes, leaving a lingering sense of discomfort rather than empowerment. As such, it stands as a missed opportunity to blend beauty with depth, leaving this viewer longing for what could have been.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
Not weird, not artistic, not scary. Just bad
As many others have mentioned, the only good thing is the beginning where they explain why the animals have gone feral but the rest is just plain boring.
The acting is very bad. I don't think I've ever seen such bad acting in a movie before.
It's quite common to watch slasher movies which are bad but in the end, they were so bad that they were funny, this one was just bad.
The plot is uninteresting and has nothing to do with Winny the Pooh. The group of the girls had nothing to do in the movie. There is no story. It is not even possible to give spoilers because there is no story to tell.
The editing is terrible. Some scenes were shot fine but most of them aren't. The lighting is usually bad, The smoke effect is overused and not relevant.
The writing is also very bad. The dialogues are almost nonsensical and the scenes are poorly written.
There is simply nothing good in this movie and I would give it 0 if it were possible.
Midnight Chronicles (2009)
Low budget but good
I had to write a review as all others are in my opinion unfair. The budget of a movie isn't everything. Besides, high budget films at the cinema are not always great, even the opposite.
Costumes and atmosphere: one of the reasons why I loved that movie is that the costumes, atmosphere and landscapes were great so you really feel immersed.
Storyline: The story was really good and ambitious even if it was naturally difficult to show everything with a lower budget.
Actors: The main actors were great like Mag and Chuzara. The actress who played the Oracle was also ABSOLUTELY amazing. Actually, in my opinion, they were better than some of the best paid actors in the world so...
So to sum up, the fact that it was low budget did prevent the team from doing everything they wanted to do but everything was good otherwise and I really enjoyed this movie.
My Dad's Christmas Date (2020)
A heartwarming and different Christmas movie
I didn't give it a 9 or 10 because it isn't a masterpiece either but I definitely think that it is a great, heartwarming and different Christmas movie.
Christmas movies are usually cheesy / soapy but this one was a bit different with topics such as love and loss. There were some funny moments as well.
While it is s subjective matter, I definitely liked the soundtrack. There were jazzy, classical and traditional songs so most people should like a few songs from the movie.
Apart from the funny scenes, there were also some heavier scenes, some about conflict or some which were sad. All in all, I definitely recommend this movie.
Cradle of Fear (2001)
Surprisingly good
One shouldn't pay attention to the logic too much. I really enjoyed this movie because I've never seen anything like it.
Horror elements: I usually don't like gore movies (personal opinion) but I think they were properly used in this movie.
Acting: some of the actors didn't even seem like they were acting which is interesting because it makes the movie seem even more real / connected to reality. The detective inspector is awesome as well as the prisoner's son. Mel is epic too.
Quality of the story: the movie is fast-paced so I never got bored. Each story is fun and I like the fact that no time is wasted.
Like some others have pointed out, I also thought I was going to get bored and stop watching after seeing the first five minutes but I also ended up watching it all and enjoying it.
