The kids in this movie were doomed before the movie was made.
There is as much chance to escape from the brothel district as there is to make it out of a slum in Haiti. Kids with cameras is going to these places (Haiti,Cairo and Calcutta)where most of the self righteous sit-on-their-ass critics would avoid at any cost.
If teaching kids how to use a camera to document there lives and expose them to culture gets ONE kid out of a hell hole where "kitchen fires" claim women whose families could not pay a dowry, where 11 yr old kids serve adult men alcohol in the brothels, where women scream brutal obscenities at each other in full earshot of children, then a film like this is worth it.
Let me put it another way.
As a film student, collector and amateur historian,I've seen thousands of movies from all genres and periods. After seeing this film, for the first time I decided to take an active role and support the cause. I commend the film makers for trying to help, and they will have my continued support for the projects in Cairo and future projects. Just let me know how much film and what type of cameras you need. This film receives my highest recommendation.

Couples are eliminated from a dance when the Caller describes embarrassing incidents from their past. Will anyone be left standing at the end? A darkly humorous look at love and vulnerability. Based on a great short story by Michael Ondaatje. Fantastic acting by Don McKellar and Tracy Wright. Directed superbly by Bruce McDonald (Highway 61,Roadkill) This is the absolute best Canadian Short Live action film. Ever. I saw it on Bravo one night years ago,and have remembered it to this day. Why more people have not mentioned it is beyond me...Maybe it's a distribution thing.
I also saw the little book after I saw the film it in a small indy bookstore (in Picton?)and have regretted not buying it ever since. Not to be missed.

This is Leones best movie.
The man with no name trilogy was great, and good, bad and ugly a deserved classic, but this is a masterpiece and ACCURATE depiction of the old west. Ten years before "Heaven's Gate" explored the "death list" and big business as a willing participant in murder,Leone exposed it and gave it a crippled railroad baron and a murderous hired gun in Frank.
One of the most accurate depictions of an old west tavern/watering hole/rest stop shows what it really was like as the west was settled. The soundtrack ranks among the very best,if not the best in film history, and the cinematography is beautiful.
Anyone who doesn't appreciate this movie needs to examine truthfully why.Is it because they disagree with the violence?Hate a good original score by a brilliant composer? None of the 4 leads out acts any of the others...so it wouldn't have been a good Clint vehicle,IMO.
At the end of Unforgiven,Clint dedicates the film to Don (the Dirty Harry director) and Sergio, who apparently taught him everything he needed to know to be the primo film-maker he has become.
