Dumbo (2019)
Really that viewers wanted the same again?
I'm in a minority chain because this is, for me, the best movie of the Disney remakes I've seen so far, including Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Lion King and Maleficent (which I can't even finish seeing yet).
But from what I saw, most of them nurtured a significant hatred for the movie's "rewrite" - not remake - thanks God!. First exactly for that. Burton made a new story (How dare he???). Second, because he uses his "characteristic environment", dull and sad scenes and a lot of sound. Then the guy finds the movie "heartless". I found the exact opposite.
What bothered me, and then maybe is this way because there is the Disney-Movie-Kids-Youth issue in the middle, is that some characters in some scenes make, say, childish and counterproductive decisions. Keaton's character, for example. Want to dominate the circus world without circus. And Eva Green's character has a very fast twist, but ok.
Finaly, even if it's taking some bad decisions, when it comes to "rewrite", that the others filmmakers be as brave as Burton has always been - as in the case of his first Alice and Planet of the Apes. In time, justice will come.
Smallfoot (2018)
Where is (or is not) God in this movie??
I have read some of the reviews written here and noticed that several of them argue that the movie was written from/to atheists. It is serious that are you reducing the debate of this film, quiet childish, just to this point?
My first question is: where is God in this animation? At no time, the movie speaks of "deities" who, as the book of Genesis says, wrote on the stone of Moses the divine laws. If the comparison is the "stones", the film makes it clear that Yetis' ancestors wrote them and made them "absolute truths."
My second question is: where is not God in this animation? In both Yeti and human society, no mention is made of God. This is not the focal point.
What I perceived, and then created in a brilliant way, were two societies created in completely different ways from each other. Let's see:
The Yeti society lives alone in the mountains. Everyone is happy to do a job that keeps society happy. There are no social differences, since all members of this society are equally important. And what holds this society together is respect for laws imposed by leaders as absolute truths. Laws these, incidentally, that look more like information, news, about what is true versus what is not. There is even a "wall" that separates this society from any other. The goals were achieved based on information control and lie.
In contrast, human society is seen as we Westerners know it. It has its problems, but it is free to research, win and lose, it has its good motivations and, of course, its coexistence with violence. But people are free.
Those who have not seen the clear comparison of the Yetis, controlled by a "higher being and its immutable laws" with totalitarian regimes that control society and what it should or should not know, did not realize the message behind this film. Until in the end, when the truth was revealed, in Migo's statement, when he said something like "this is the terrible truth, but it is better than the lie. And now we have to make a decision. " We? Are we then shifting to the democratic regime? With all its problems? Of course we are.
The language of the film has been softened for the kids, but overall, it's a good family movie, and as we're accustomed to our freedoms, we do not even realize the fact that in our days there are still such closed societies as the Yetis portrayed in this movie.
Instead, people prefer to blame God.
Ed Wood (1994)
Cheers to Ed and Lugosi
Yes, I know. It is a shame on me that I just saw this movie this year. A classic Burton that I ignored and after see it I'm just in love.
I liked so much this movie that I made efforts to have Plan 9 to see after. The live of the worst director of all time is so good pictured that is impossible not have curiosity about it.
There are so many things here to be exalted. The brilliant performance of Johnny Depp is just a start.
But everyone knows him. So, let me talk more about Martin Bela Lugosi Landau, OK? He is amazingly spectacular. How not to laugh at him struggling with that octopus? How not to sympathize with him seeing his weakness, and forgetfulness that he suffered?
There is another scene that is simply stuck in my mind, that is the scene where there are a fake scenario and the guards raise it, in front of the producers. The question is: "Do you really know how to make a movie?" Of course not!
But what is the value of Ed Wood for the history of cinema? Some may value his works in a particular way, some may simply ignore it. But for me, what remains about Ed Wood, even confessing that I didn't see any of his pictures, is that he is a dreamer, a guy who strongly fought to make what he wanted, against everything and everyone. And no matter how bad are his works, he made his history. Yes, he did it!
Man of Steel (2013)
From Someone Who Is Not That Fan of Superman
Well, I have to say that Superman is one of the Superheroes that never got that attention from me. The original story, where an indestructible guy, with laser vision e fire coming out of his eyes, that fly and so on, can deceive everyone with a change of glasses is gross.
Then the new vision of Brian Singer in 2006 made me get away much more of this character
I almost didn't have desire to watch this movie because of this past, but a name caught my attention: Nolan. I knew that, even with a personage that I don't really like, he could be one of the few to make me at least enjoy.
OK, I still have some problems here, but it is reduced now. I didn't swallow the reasons from the parents send off a son through the galaxy and remain in a planet that they knew that is about to collapse. Common
Let the son behind and die just that? Nope
But, indeed, they really captured my attention by the way they did about the Krypton story. The way the young Clark Kent developed his personality, and, the most of all, how they treated Louis Lane.
In fact, Lois has also been the most stupid women in love until now. But here, Zack Snider changed her from water to wine. What, in my point of view, was the most corrected vision of a woman who works at a journal, making deep researches, convincing powerful people and so on.
The exaggeration of action on the movie can be explained by the fact that we have a lot of "supermen" fighting at the same place, but I have to agree that was a little to much to me. But, hello?, we are talking about Snider
So, that was the best Superman movie ever, even comparing with the old ones.
Gangster Squad (2013)
It Was Supposed To Be Serious?
Well, something said to my perception that the purpose of this movie had something serious on it. Half an hour later I discovered that I was wrong. It is just an action-fun movie, and nothing more that this.
I'm used to watch the gangsters' movies and series as they are: With typical violence and lots of bloodshed. Well, I'm not telling that this elements are not included, but they were, how can I say?, smoothed.
Indeed, I liked the movie. As an entertainment it falls good. But, with the cast on it, I was expecting a super production, what unfortunately it is not.
Well, changing the focus about what to expect, so we can turn this in a movie to a pastime and forget it some time later. I like a lot all the effort of Sean Penn, but Ryan Gosling is so terrible that I wonder how he manages so many good characters
Odeio o Dia dos Namorados (2013)
Waste of Time
Brazil is one of the most productive movie countries around the world. But is totally influenced by those who are attached by Globo Productions. No, it is not a bad producer company, but some of those works are made for the average of its viewers who is not that kind of public so challenging with cinema.
So, this work is a totally waste of time. It is supposed to be a comedy, but nothing there give us pleasure. It is suppose to be a romance, but also the main character does not create empathy. The only one who can be highlighted is the homosexual friend Gilberto (Marcelo Sabak), but even his presentation is offensive for some
So, do not do it with yourself by watching this crab. Take other Brazilian movies that are really good, not this.
The Words (2012)
It Really Takes Your Attention, But...
I don't know exactly how to say that, but I liked this movie from the beginning to almost the end of it. But, you know when you just feel that something is missing? So, that was my feeling about this.
The way the history is chronicled is magnificent! It is impossible not to desire discover what is on that found book, and to complete our astonishment the way that the 3 writers' history crossover, including the understanding the whole thing makes the sense. So, it is impossible to take the eyes out of the screen during the projection.
But, we are in a time that in the end (or in the middle, in the beginning, whatever), we expect some surprisingly, shocking, awful turnover. And this is something that really ends not existing on this one. I want to believe that, for some, this is good, something that they desire on our days. But that was just my feeling at the end of this sensitive movie, and you are allowed to ignore it!
Anyway, I have to tell the Jeremy Irons is simply astonishing as the Old Man and pays all the ticket value. Olivia Wilde should appear more in movies, and Bradley Cooper is the right way to cross the line between comedies through dramas.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Is it really that good? ... No!
I just saw this movie and I found it in line of mediocrity.
I didn't buy the idea of all that absurdity about bets and superstitions. I didn't like the comedy inside, since the proposal here is to show that serious mental problems. I didn't like the lack of sense on the attitudes of the characters. And definitely I didn't like how they solve the movie, with that suppose professional dance contest.
Each of the elements above are not the problem. But this mix is a receipt that screwed.
The performances are good, but this plot didn't help all the talent involved.
This movie was full of boring dialogs, nonsense decisions and it is not funny.
Santos 100 Anos de Futebol Arte (2012)
Made to those who was born, live and die to Santos
Tell 100 years of history is not easy task to be made on less than 2 hours. Even choosing the best parts is not something that will get the life easier. And a team with the most important soccer player for all time certainly will suffer still more to make it.
This video is one of the several documentaries about Santos Futebol Clube, which is not the most popular, the bigger, or the richest team in Brazil, but it is the team that has a mark: The happiness of playing soccer with the art. They used to say that a lightning never hits the same place twice. This is not true when we talk about Santos. And this is the reason of this video beyond the fact that in 2012 we are celebrating its centenary.
Of course this is a film made specially for those who cheers to Santos. And there some parts that are not perfect in the issue "cinema". But for those who saw even a part of what is presented at this video, this can get you emotionally.
One of the parts showed that I liked the most was the game against Fluminense in Pacaembu at the Brazilian Championship of 1995. I was there and that team has made something that I never saw before. Only for that, the movie receive all credits for me. But the edition of old movies of his history and what the team achieve at the last decade also make the watch obligatory for its fans.
