Joy Ride (2023)
I had a great time.
That's all I can say. It was a really fun comedy. I laughed out loud a lot even watching it alone and wished I had seen it in a theater. Not so many of these simple but entertaining R-rated comedies get made anymore and I had a fun time with the cast, all a really talented bunch, the "Girls' trip" gone wrong premise is solid, lots of hilarity, an unexpected but great musical number, plus some genuine feels. Audrey's journey as an adoptee added some unique POV and heart to an otherwise standard (in a fun way) comedy... Adele Lim is a genius. Definitely recommend if you're looking for something light and entertaining a la Bridesmaids.
I'm a Virgo (2023)
weird in the best way
Really good. That's all I can say. The best art to me is the kind I can't effectively describe. It is itself. That's the highest compliment I can give. This show never did what I expected but felt 100% appropriate to itself the whole time. It was engaging and bizarre and sweet and packed a punch and I love seeing stuff like this get made. It's worth the watch and I don't even mind if there's another season or how the second one goes, this one stands on its own and will still be enjoyable for me no matter what else happens to it in the future. Definitely recommend checking it out now and not worrying too much it's just a good ride.
A Black Lady Sketch Show (2019)
Good laughs
This is a show I mostly only think of when a new season drops, but when it does, it gets genuine laughs out of me, which not a lot of TV does these days. Great cast, some sketches go harder than others, but that's normal for any sketch show. Each episode gets me at least a few times with line deliveries or pure unexpected gags. Love the bloopers over the credits too. Deserves more credit than it gets. Though it's sad to see some of the original cast members moving on after each season, they always add great new performers... love watching the new opening credits each season, too, it's always a banger.
Teen Wolf: The Movie (2023)
impressive how they managed to sneak under low expectations
Look, i loved teen wolf for what it was. It wasn't a masterpiece but it was FUN. I didn't have high expectations for this movie coming in and it's wild how much it fell beneath my very low bar.
It was nice to see the actors i love from various roles on the show. Sadly not a single one had a meaningful role or presence in this movie. Not one. Not even scott or allison. It was laughable how obviously they had to write around Kira not being there thanks to Arden Cho having the good sense and self respect to turn down this role. The plot was so obviously structured around her character and made no sense with the stand-in replacement they added (not that it would've made a TON of sense with Kira either, but a little more). The nogitsune isn't compelling without Dylan O'Brien there, and even aside from any desires i might've had for the characters being fulfilled/unfulfilled... the quality all around was far worse than the TV show, somehow. Dialogue, music, directing, story, effects, all of it was somehow dumber and cheesier than the show which again, was not some prestigious cinematic thing in the first place.
I was ready to cheer on a mediocre follow up but this was just too bad to even enjoy. And ABSURDLY LONG for how bad it was.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
Season 1 is a 10/10, Season 2 dropped off HARD
Season 1 was brilliant, original, and really well executed. I loved everything about it and I had really high expectations for Season 2.
I can recommend Season 1 highly, but not Season 2. It was incredibly disappointing, especially from writers that I expected more from.
Season 2 as a whole was uneventful. It had no new plot ideas and struggled and stalled in the middle. It had no idea what to do with existing characters like Tammy (really poorly written; the actor did her best to humanize the character but her actions never made sense)... and didn't even deliver a satisfying ending. They chose to rush a huge escalation at the end to take care of Kevin, but personally I never cared about Kevin dying. And the way it happened was so sudden and unearned. Maybe it would've worked if it was set up better, but it wasn't.
They also really botched the ending with Allison and Patty's relationship. It really felt like they were leading up to a romantic ending, then they pulled away at the last second. It would be fine if they weren't romantic if they had at least addressed it and redirected the story towards friendship more clearly. And even as a friendship ending, it was weird and weak compared to their past scenes. I hoped for more from the central relationship of the show.
Season 1 was tight and brilliant. Season 2 felt like they had no idea what they were doing and couldn't even agree amongst the cast and crew of what they wanted to do. Really sad.
Do Revenge (2022)
fun teen movie
I don't expect much from Netflix teen movies these days, but this one exceeded my expectations. It has a target audience, so if you're outside of that, you might not love it, but it was a lot more enjoyable and had more surprises plot-wise than I expected. Plus some fun homages to 90s/2000s teen movies. Definitely a notch above a lot of other Netflix movies. There were moments I rolled my eyes and THOUGHT it was going someplace stupid, but then it went in a new direction that kept things interesting. If you're in the mood for a (slightly) dark teen comedy then this movie is a very solid choice.
Dickinson (2019)
unique and excellent
My favorite shows are ones with a totally unique style and voice, that are 100% themselves and not trying to be anything else. This show is IT. Hailee Steinfeld impressed me a lot in this show, and the rest of the cast is good as well. The anachronistic tone works surprisingly well. The humor is great and it's also poignant about what it's like to be an artist or any sort of outsider. And having a couple of two women at the forefront, which is neither sickly sweet nor tragedy porn, is fucking amazing. Loved it, no notes, give me more shows like this.
Crush (2022)
we need more movies like this
Cute, fun movie for teens where being queer is normal. We need more movies like this about girls who like girls where it's not a big deal and just part of their world. Glad kids have this movie.
The Morning Show: La Amara Vita (2021)
why do they think anyone wants to watch this
This was a terrible episode of television, almost as bad as Killing Eve 3x05. Maybe worse actually. Literally who thought this was a good idea. It's hard to even meet the 150 character minimum because I don't want to think about this episode any longer than I have to. It was hilariously bad.
Killing Eve: Are You from Pinner? (2020)
Why?
There was no point to anything in this episode. Why do I care about her mom we never heard of before? This show is better when it involves all the characters. Low point of the season.
