I read reviews after watching. First I will say that I will refrain from bashing another countries dramas and or acting style to get my point across. It had potential but it missed the mark in my opinion. With that being said I have only watched K&C dramas so this was a new direction. I was not pleased but I wasn't disappointed but that's probably because I didn't have any expectations when I chose it. It's more of a mixture of a bunch of ideas that had absolutely nothing to make them have a common ground.
Poverty meets wealth. Wealth abuses power. Then, poverty after losing all hope, eventually finds peace.

Let me narrow this down as much as possible. It is TP's best work (i) so far. In that time it would have been easier to accept her as another race. Her mother was biracial and I am sure her father was caucasian. Also, it's a movie. It (refusing to accept who you are) happened a lot in that timeframe. I will not discredit it because someone had more dominant genes towards a section of their identity. The movie is worth the watch. It delivered the blues, jazz, but also oppression, discrimination, fear of..., and somehow still managed to show the love and hope we had in our hearts.
It takes me to a place that brings tears to my eyes and hurt to my heart.
The father that showed no love, seem to have had a backstory that was well needed. It was also a jealous brother involved, who may have been conditioned by a broken father, to believe his skin-tone was better. Then we have the mother who tried to carry all of the pain and fix what was broken way before she could even leave her own mother's womb.
