A very long time ago there was ' Beatles 'a simple pop group, their songs were simple two to four instruments and a chain of simply words. These words were able to create incredible feelings and emotions in us mere mortals. There were many other groups and movies as well, at various times, each more sophisticated than the one earlier. The common things in these are the fact that the most simple things, feelings, prose, poetry are the very greatest. Vincy A.did a very wonderful job in the movie as a simple, ordinary normal Kerala Mallu girl. Rony David did justice to his role as a simpleton who dedicated his life to the care of his father. The movie depicts the life of simple people in, perhaps somewhat convoluted life situations. Without the fanfare of superstars or the loaded aspects of ' item ' dances and songs, this movie creates a feeling of heartfelt nostalgia of the earlier simplistic life in Kerala. The name " PAZHANJAN PRANAYAM " itself is totally and completely justified for the purpose and the story view.
This movie was somewhat refreshing and different from many of the boring movies normally churned out by Bollywood and other so called " woods " of India. Did not know that Harshvardhan Kapoor was Anil Kapoor's son, till after watching this film. Anil Kapoor, Fatima Sheik did rather believable acting. The major jarring issue felt was was perhaps Harshvardhan is ' gifted '; with woody expression (almost similar to Sunny Deol in the good old days). The revenge story was very believable and genuine, depicting a woman who was wronged by uncouth, brutal savages. The depiction of still existing patriarchal mind set in Indian society is very genuine. One of the antagonist is not a happy man because his wife is infertile. Here, he cannot even remotely consider the probability that maybe he is sterile or that he is shooting ' blanks '. The rape, torture and mutilation of the protagonist's wife is similar to the new Delhi Nirbhaya Rape / Murder case (2012). It may seem that the torture of the antagonists was a tad too realistic. Same can be said for the initial intercourse scene. People cursing is also a bit much for a mainstream movie. The lack of training of the Policemen was very clearly indicated. In the movie they are seen armed with ancient rifles. In fact this is reality of the Police Force in India. The rugged and dry beauty of Rajasthan Desert (Thar) is filmed very beautifully. Altogether the movie was quite ' different ' than the run of the mill commercial ones.
This movie is just about watchable but that is all. The ' artistic license ' to create such a story seems to have been over exploited by the author / writer. The lady Police constable (Shivani) is shown to be too timid to be employed in the Police force. Toward the end of the movie, when the police approach, the AWOL police driver and the lady constable are seen sleeping. At this time the dog belonging to the owner of the little house (where all three hide) senses the charging police team and starts barking but the two who are sleeping do not wake up, till the, ' encounter specialist Policewoman ' Ali catches them. This seems to be a needless ploy to stretch the story and make the movie longer. Furthermore, it seems that the movie is much of an advertisement for the different available smoking devices. We see the encounter specialist Policewoman first smoking perhaps a normal Cigarette. The next time we see that she has upgraded to Electronic Cigarette. Her smoking does not seem to be caused by stress of her job, but it seems more to be a method to draw needless attention to her mannerisms. Liquor seems to be readily available all times to the protagonist as we see him drink all the time. The protagonist is heard saying that he did not witness the initial days of birth of his daughter and that he met her for the first time only seven days after her birth. He goes on to say that the seven day old baby, stared at him angrily at that time. This would mean that his baby is a prodigy to indicate anger seven days after being born. He also indicates that she was angry with him and was not on speaking terms because she thought that he had killed her friends father in a 'fake encounter. I am yet to hear or see a daughter, who has a normal relationship with her father, not being happy in whatever he does, Most normal father/daughter is based on utmost love.
