I watched this when I had nothing better to fo when not feeling well. It is mildly entertaining with one or two good moments but overall it's ridiculous hokum. Some of the scriptwriting is atrocious with plenty of tried and tested clichés accompanied by some fairly terrible acting. It did make it to the end but was left wondering why I didn't just read a good book instead! The two leading characters just about get away with their performances.
I did wonder why Vogel spent hours faffing about with fixing a car when there happened to be a handy light aircraft out the back on an equally convenient runway.
More plot holes than a Swiss cheese :)

I was looking for a movie to watch and this looked like an interesting idea, albeit along the traditional lines of crew cohesion. However I managed about twenty minutes before giving up. The gross aviation inaccuracy was bad enough but combined with unconvincing CGI it was visually unappealing to start with. The script writing was terrible and the acting wooden and amateur, even allowing for the allegedly small budget and largely unknown cast. What really grated on me though, was the utter disregard for credibility in portraying a crew that was permanently drunk and utterly unprofessional in a flying environment, even given the wartime situation for young men. Frankly an insult to the men who served. This film is essentially unwatchable.
I have just watched this for the second time since its release. I had forgotten how incredibly well made and powerful it is. Every performance is of the highest standard and the writing is utterly convincing but this is Sean Bean's finest performance. This is not an easy drama to watch; it would have failed if it were, the humanity and frailty of the priest is utterly convincing even for a viewer of no religion such as I.
A great deal is packed into six episodes but it never feels overblown even when the emotional content feels overwhelming.
The closing scene is one of beauty, redemption and reassurance of the fundamental goodness of many people of whatever faith even when surrounded by pain and trouble.
If you have not seen this serial, seek it out without delay.
