I think this movie is just a bit contained when it could've been funnier/darker and gone further with the make-up effects. I also was just a bit bothered by some Deus Ex-Machina moments and also the non-exploration of some subplots, but that's just that. Still, it's worth the watch, it entertains a lot, and Isabelle's performance outshines all the others.

Halloween Kills
(2021)
The Terror Continues!
16 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
McBride, Green, and Teems are repeating here, on a larger scale, the same writing mistakes from the 2018 reboot. First of all, this movie is NOT the worst of the franchise, but it's not the best. It has its chaotic and bloody moments, but this film has pacing problems. And I mean it because it feels like you've watched a filler episode at the end. Maybe I was overhyped by it, because it sold itself as a quintessential Halloween movie, and it's just a camp horror that goes nowhere, and its script (full of cringe lines) could've gone FURTHER. I'm not disappointed because I hope this is just a setting for the third entry, and I may learn to love this one on my next rewatchings.
It's not a complete waste of time...

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is visually delightful, and it is indeed a fun camp film, but its script (which is more well-structured if compared to the previous chapter's script) is full of conveniences, improbabilities, and overexplaining. I wish they (producers) did to Alice's universe what they did in Harry Potter's cinematization: something camp and fun, but that doesn't lose its solidity and maturity. But these are only my projections into something that is not within my reach. Maybe the intention was to do something for younger audiences, whatever. The thing is: I can see tremendous potential in the allegorical tale of the girl who fell down the rabbit hole. And I hope that someday she'll have a decent remake.
If you watched it at a movie theater, congratulations! You just survived a escape room and ur also joining Mino's next year's tournament of champions...

Warning: Spoilers
This movie has its fun parts, but for the most, it underestimates the viewer's brain. Perhaps the biggest mistake in the sequence was trying to explain the Minos plot. But we also have so many conveniences, improbabilities, and involuntary memes that... ugh! This one fell flat a lot in quality.
Candyman

THE LEGEND OF CANDYMAN!
12 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie's script had its potential destroyed by a swarm of bees despite being political, incisive, and metalinguistic. It lacks personality (by being predictable at some moments), seems overloaded, makes little effort to create tension, and doesn't develop the characters well. However, this movie was very well directed, has solid performances, and is visually beautiful.
Battle Royale

That was a REAL BATTLE!
12 October 2021
This movie has explosive energy, non-stop action, tension, and lots of fun. Even though there is a lot of criticism emphasizing its differences from the manga, but I still believe it proves itself effective (at least for a layperson).
Alice in Wonderland
(I) (2010)
Walt Disney would cut off the heads of those responsible for this work!

Appreciable visual effects, despite they're not as surreal as those in the original movie. The script could have been a lot better, the direction has little of the "Burton touch", the performances overall are not so captivating. Even so, I wouldn't say it was a failure, but it could have been way better. Still, it's a good retelling of the classic.
Hour of the Wolf
(1968)
I didn't understand a thing, but I LOVE IT!

Warning: Spoilers
Allegorical, surreal, and atmospheric. On-point performances, well-directed, and beautifully shot! I need to rewatch with friends to theorize, but I think that since it's an experimental take on horror by Bergman (a psychanalysis lover), mental questions or maybe disorders were a recurring theme. Also, reflections on patriarchy and dealing with inner demons, among other sub-themes.
Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor
(1992 Video)
The actual movie is really bad, but there's some interesting editing!

Warning: Spoilers
The only thing I like about this movie is the different plot perspectives its edition gives (but the editing overall is really bad and pointless). I watched it just because I'm a fan of the franchise. The things I do for love...
Dream Demon
(1988)
Confrontation With the Devil!
3 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film is a carbon copy of A Nightmare on Elm Street (meets Hellraiser) that offers a curious take on the dreams world. Unfortunately, its potential was poorly executed by a lazy and full of clichés script and weak performances.
A Quiet Place Part II
(2020)
A Quieter Place!
2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Loaded with action, but it doesn't have the same tension as the previous film. For me, the problem was writing a prequel for the sequel and inserting lots of conveniences in it. It just was unnecessary. They made too much noise about this movie for almost nothing.
A Classic Horror Story

A Classic Terror Movie! (Ew, Netflix)
2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The main idea is interesting, but its execution has some flaws. The film wastes too much time delving into despicable characters and leaves the real fun for the third act. The script is a horror film patchwork, even though it tries to revitalize the genre, in the footsteps of Wes Craven's Scream.

A love letter to... THIS SICK INDUSTRY OF MONEY MAKERS!!
2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It has an interesting idea that doesn't translate well into the movie. Editing has some problems too, and the acting isn't as captivating. At least it tries to sail through different ways using a common trope in horror movies and even delivers some interesting discussions about the relation between audiovisual works and violence and its impacts on society.

Thank you A24! XD
Bizarre, human, allegorical, suspenseful. AMAZING performances. The script doesn't deliver all the necessary answers - and that might be a problem if we compare the Greek tale to this work, but we won't do that, right? - and it's beautifully shot.

The Room 1408!
2 October 2021
The film strives to keep the viewers' attention by pushing numerous action sequences but it ends up falling short and revealing itself as an attempt to be The Shining of the 2000s. I admit I like its chaotic energy, but it's still unnecessarily long and predictable at some points.
Trouble Every Day
(2001)
Desire and Obsession!
2 October 2021
The story itself isn't strong, in part because everything's somehow clear (and unexplainable), even though it leaves much space for the viewer's theories. It's a slow burn that permeates horror, drama, and romance, and that might not be a pleasant mix for many, though the movie's quite an interesting experience.

Alice in the Land of Wonders!

Chaotic and surreal. I can see that the animators worked a lot with metaphors and layers here, but it would be interesting to follow a development - albeit minimal - of the various characters presented. Still, this is one of the best classics Disney has ever produced.
