Batman Begins (2005)
it begins!
first of all i must admit that i'm not a batman expert, i have not read many of the comics, or novels, my experience with batman has been the recent animated series, or the Tim Burton's version of the man in the black suit, i have always been a big fan of batman, because unlike most of the other superheroes you can actually understand and sympathize with him, he has survived a tragedy, and now he is filled with rage, and desire of vengeance, he must undergo a process to channel this anger to help his fellow citizen's, but unlike most of the other incarnations of the caped crusader, this film grabs you and for people like me who live in a city with a large crime problem, it makes you wish for a man like this, to help the people no one hears, it even makes you wish you had it in you to put on a disguise and go off an do something heroic, of course we don't have the millions or resources that Bruce Wayne has at his disposal but still, this movie gives new life to the character, it inspires, and proves you don't have to be super to be a hero.
Cristo 70 (1970)
a campy 70's Mexican movie
i saw this movie when a was very small, but what i remember is that this is basically the story of a young group of friends, who are committing a bunch of petty thefts, but then the opportunity arises for them to score a much bigger prize, things don't go as planed, they end up hiding out in a small Mexican town, during easter week, the towns people are curios to find out something about their new visitors, they come up with the story that there engineering students or something, there in town working on this big protect that will in the long run mean progress for the small town and it's inhabitants, everybody falls for the story, the towns people embrace them, they even invite them to participate in their easter celebrations including the good Friday recreation of the passion of Christ, the leader of the young group of hoodlums is cast as Jesus, all of a sudden one of the young men decides hes had enough of the small town an he decides to go back home, against the advice of his friends, back home the young man is picked up by the cops, he is interrogated, and he quickly gives up his friends, meanwhile back in the small town the young thief's are making themselves at home, there even falling for some of the towns girls, good Friday comes along, and everyone is oblivious to the fact that the cops are on their way along with the young Judas who is ready to finger his former friends, this film is a little campy like a lot of Mexican movies from the 70's, but it's still entertaining.
X2 (2003)
excellent sequel!
i haven't enjoyed a movie this much in a long time, the action, the special effects, the acting all excellent, i love these characters, even though some of them didn't have much to do this time, im sure there time will come, in one of the many sequels i hope they'll make, some good new characters were introduced, but in the end wolverine still rules.
Tizoc (Amor indio) (1957)
a story about sacrifice
i don't know if this is a great love story, i think it's more a story about sacrifice, what would you do for the one you love?, and in some way deals with the racism that exists in mexico, (even though some people think there's no racism in Mexico), like in all diverse societies there's racism, just like there's poor people, rich people, ignorant people and very well educated people, so you have this dirt pour mexican indian, who's not the most popular lad in town (you see even among his people there's envy and hatred for those a little different), the only things he cares about is putting food on his plate and flowers in the church altar, until one day he sees her, is she the virgin mary? an angel?, she's his goddess, he knows he's not worthy of her, so he decides to become worthy, use every ounce of his strength to give her something close to what she's used to being a rich spoiled bit**, (lady) from the big city, she could never see him as more than a friend, a companion (comparable to a pet, maybe a lap dog or something), he would sacrifice every thing for her, could she do the same?, could she really feel love for this poor dude, i like this movie because i feel for Tizoc, cast perfectly in the role of the bit**, sorry, Maria is the real life bit**, Maria Felix, and Pedro Infante (the mexican elvis) as Tizoc.
Rojo amanecer (1990)
not much has changed!
i recently saw this movie again, and it just made me feel sick, because even though that actually happened 34 years ago, and we as a society think that so much has changed, you soon realize that it hasn't, because that could actually happen again in this day and age, and it actually has, of course we don't hear anything about it, as we didn't hear much about it back then, there's a scene in the movie, when the family after thinking the worst is over, sit around the tv to watch the news, and they are shocked to hear the news anchor reports about just a minor disturbance, with some injured and some dead, 34 years latter we still don't know the whole story, but what we do know is that it wasn't a minor disturbance, hundreds of students, most in their late teens or early twenty's where slaughtered like pigs in the middle of the street by the mexican army, that's the reason all student movement's are doomed to fail, because politicians who are supposed to be the ones looking after us don't think twice about murdering the innocent as long as they get to stay in power, a lot of people don't understand, and say "well they asked for it" or "what where they protesting", they where protesting a corrupt government that didn't think twice about doing what it did, there's some very violent scenes in the movie, but i don't think it was enough, i wish this movie was so raw and in your face that it would have been able to wake up everyone who is still living in the dream world.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
it was keyser soze!
when kevin spacey is involved you know it's going to be good, one of my all time favorite movies, full of smart dialog, and some great action scenes, great acting from everyone involved, it's not for those people who have to figure out (or the world will end) who did it before the movie is over, or those people who think they could have given the movie a better ending (make your own movie!), this is for people who love movies and can just let themselves get into the story, and enjoy it. after a police line up puts five cons together, they decide to start doing some jobs, the last one is an assault on a boat, after that goes wrong, the survivors are left to tell the story, the spacey character tells his side of the story to a police detective, (but is he feeding him just a bunch of bull sh**?), his story takes a turn when the name of keyser soze is mentioned by the only other survivor, who is keyser soze?, is keyser soze the devil himself?, apparently it was he who arranged the assault, but why? no one knows for sure, the detective is sure he figured out the motives and the identity of the keyser and confronts spacey with that information, after all is said and done, the detective finally realizes his mistake, but does he still have a chance to capture the keyser?, no it's too late!, because just like that, he's gone.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
too cool
a lot of people could say that this film is more style than substance, but that's not true, even though it's a very cool looking movie, it's one of my all time favorites, i just love this movie, for my part, just the discussion of why mr. pink does not believe in tipping, what is "like a virgin" really about, and the opening credits, when their walking, makes this movie worth seeing.
Como agua para chocolate (1992)
long and boring
it lasted for two hours, it seemed like five, ridiculous, over the top, i didn't care about these stupid people, a lot of useless scenes, useless characters, did Arau ever hear of an editor, it didn't do the book any justice.
