Very impressive accomplishment for first time director Katheryn Grant, who also performed the leading role with magnificent persuasion. Her role (hard to play) is of an ingénue who has no understanding of the corrupt and harsh world of the music industry. Yet, despite the manipulations of her seducer, she is inspired her to continue her singing efforts. I saw the film at the SENE film festival in Providence, where she won as best Director, and the film also won honorable mention. The period's ambiance, the costumes, the talented co-actors were all superbly cast. The storyline has unexpected twists and when all is combined, it creates an emotionally satisfying, uplifting film that touches on universal truths.
I just saw this film at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and was moved on all levels. This is a powerful, edifying, memorable film. It develops the characters in such an intelligent way that one becomes completely involved and tied to their future, and when tragedy happens, it happens to you. It grabs and does not let go and it is a wonderful ride.
The emotions are thus linked, but wait, it also happens on a physical level with the poetic scenery and sounds, as well as on the intellectual and spiritual levels: for the film takes the concept of loss, and has us grow with it, benefit from it. Loss, no matter how devastating, is not without meaning, purpose. This is the unifying concept that makes this film hang together; the invisible part of the visible is threaded masterfully through it, and offers much wisdom.
This is romantic on a grand scale: a needed and balanced dance between realism and transcendentalism that brushes off existentialist ideology as it if was a drop of rain on one's shoulder by injecting the positive context of a greater psychological and philosophical vision. Yet there are no lectures there is no preaching.
I cried several times! So did everyone in the theater. An older man sitting in the seat in front of me at the end of the film rose to stop and wipe his glasses and eyes before starting up the isle. Yet I did not feel disturbed by this film, only elated and peaceful. This film is a gifted creation and a gift to all. A must see! I was the winner this year of the Scriptbiz contest at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, where you had to compose an original script within their established limits and backdrop, and then present it to 5 judges. I am a follower of philosophy and science, a poet, a painter and writer. Google my name and check out my work, the vast experience with which I recommend this film.
