The premise is the only thing that's even remotely redeemable in this movie. The plot has more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. More than half of this nepotistic joke was spent on the singer, who just happens to be the director's daughter, singing unremarkable, generic pop songs. Not to mention she has the facial expression range of a ventriloquist dummy.
The last M Night movie I watched was Old, which suffers from much of the same issues. He always has an intriguing premise, but has absolutely no clue how to write believable characters, which often leads to ridiculous plot actions that make no sense. No one thought to ask this guy to take off his wristband the entire movie? The FBI profiler has absolutely no development. If they didn't spend half the screen time on the pointless singer, maybe they could have developed someone who actually mattered.
There are just so many idiotic things that need to be called out, I got more upset as it went on. I don't know if a movie has ever made me this frustrated. Bad movies can be bad, but when you take such an original premise and a great actor like Harnett and absolutely waste it with the hare-brained direction and laughable plot, that's what gets my goat.

I'm 42, and am writing this in 2024 from Canada after a divorce and failed business. Never have I connected so much with a film in my life. I normally love sci-fi and horror, but bought this on a recommendation from a very good friend.
You don't get much more raw than this in terms of filmmaking. I was startled to learn that it came out in 1999, years before my first exposure to Korean cinema, which was Oldboy in 2003. I consider myself a true lover of film and hadn't learnt about it until this year. This should be on everyone's top 10 list of films to see for discerning lovers of storytelling, and the representation of the human condition is next to none. Bravo to all involved, particularly direction, cinematography and writing.

As an ardent fan of horror, I've been watching the V/H/S films since the first one. They've been very hit and miss, but certainly all formulaic in their plots for the most part.
This one really isn't that different, although it's cool that the focus is more on extraterrestrial scenarios. After watching many, I feel that this is a format that is severely limited by its filming style. You're always stuck in this first-person video game perspective which was cool when I first played Half Life almost 30 years ago, but there is much more suspense and value to be had with more creative cinematography.
This horror formula is played out, but knowing the genre, they will beat the horse until it's dead, and then beat the zombie horse into oblivion.
Not a bad watch for modern horror fans I guess. The constant camera cuts and "VHS" effects give me a headache though.
