The impression of watching this movie is that DreamWorks tried to make their own version of Turning Red, which ended up being something boring and generic.
The plot is generic and highly predictable. The first trailer basically sums up the entire movie and if you've watched it before, you'll know how each event will play out.
The jokes are bland and not funny. I tried to force myself to laugh at at least one of them and I couldn't. Basically I kept looking at the clock counting how much time was left for the movie to end because of how uninteresting it is. I may not be the target audience, but the kids I know would struggle to stay awake watching it.
Basically I'm only giving it a 5 for the animation itself, which is good, but I wanted DreamWorks to keep the stylized 2D like in 'The Bad Guys' and 'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish'.

This movie is good. Nothing special but not a disaster either. There are no villains and the story is basically a cliché romance that many have seen in several other movies. However it's funny, the jokes are good and the plot is decent.
I believe the marketing failed to sell this movie. From the trailers, it seems that the movie is adventure-themed, a generic Zootopia with elements, but in fact, it's a romantic comedy. Something that was only hinted at in the first teaser, which is not even a scene in the movie.
For movies like these, I usually give a 7, but I'm giving this movie an 8 because I really liked the visuals of the characters and the environment. And watching it in 3D makes it even better, with elements much more vivid.
It's not Pixar's best animation by far, but better than its latest disasters for sure.

If you only watch the movie with the intention of having fun, you will certainly have a good experience with Mario. However the plot is quite bland and the movie runs at a very fast pace between one scene and another, hampering the progress of the story.
Also, if you haven't played the Mario games, you'll fail immeasurably to pick up the game references that are scattered throughout the movie, and there are many of them. For anyone who's a Mario fan, this movie is literally fan service and it's no wonder why they're giving it a 10.
For me, this movie doesn't lived up to the hype, but for a Mario fan, it certainly did.
