Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (2023)
Need to balance out the fawning reviews
I'll admit upfront I stopped playing after switching to the Cere planet. Too much ridiculous effin jumping and parkour. Nonsense side conversations. Why even allow talking to these NPCs? And as others posted here, the long long long ass backtracking when you get killed. Snore. Plus, where the f am I supposed to go next? I have a map, I have a droid, give me at least some kind of HUD or visual cue. I'm a grown ass man who's been playing games for 30 years, and this thing is a dud. If the emperor was in this game, he'd be naked. If you aren't a huge huge huge star wars fan, skip it. Here are 13 characters to make this post.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
We must have watched different shows...
Just finished Obi as we're rewatching EVERYTHING is chronological order. Don't let these haters keep you from spending less than 5 hours on this effort. Def not as bad as they say. Ewan is the glue and little Vivien puts a young Hayden in EP 1 to shame. Sure the Inquisitors are a little flat, but that 3rd Sister rocks! Indira finally gets to play a sympathetic character. Visuals as typically top notch as these Disney+ shows have been. Plus, someone made an app that re-voices James Earl Jones? How can I download that? Nicely connects the timeline in a believable and logical way. Come on. Watch it!
The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
Illogical, illogical
I am completely stumped as to how this show as a series could have been so good and end so badly. Part of what made it cool was the attention to space flight detail on a budget. (I'm talking about you magnetic shoes.) Somehow, in Season 6 they just gave up dealing with the gravity issues in space. (I mean a guy lost his arm because a crate fell?) Naomi, so badass flying across space without a suit, then becomes a pathetic mess. Holden... Ugh. Bobbie finally gets to stop being Av's baby sitter. Even my phone is upset because it will no longer scroll so I can see what I'm typing.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Huh? What are you watching?
SPOILERS! Hate to be a naysayer - but I saw this piece of crap this afternoon and I am beginning to wonder what we are calling "Best Picture" worthy this year. (I also left "No Country for Old Men" scratching my head.) Now before you mark me down as a rube raised on The Brady Bunch, I've been a fan of movies for over 40 years! Back on point: DDL overacts not acts. Yes, it's beautifully shot, but the supporting cast (with the exception of the Eli and "brother" character) are given almost NO dialogue. So we're left with scenery chewing in a vacuum. I haven't read the source material, so I can't say how faithfully adapted it was, but what happened to the literary idea that characters develop? Tell me, why is Daniel such a s**thead? What is the source of his dysfunction? In the end, everyone has proved his point and we are back where we started. Ugh.
Daughter of the Mind (1969)
Amazing so many others of my generation say the same thing
I, too, saw this one afternoon on the 4 o'clock movie when I was less than 8 years old. (My mother must have been off caring for my baby sister or cleaning to have let me watch this.) I had nightmares for years. This movie comes to me sometimes when I think about other movies. It's a natural tie in when I think of "Barton Fink" (Theater of the Mind! . . . Daughter of the Mind). Thank God for the internet we can remember these things. Hope to find it someday on DVD. The Pam Ferdyn comments ring true too - probably the first actress I ever had a crush on (sorry Marcia Brady, you're a close second). I can't tell you as a kid how relieved I was that it was all a hoax. Back then I don't think I knew how many big stars were in it. I guess with all the outlets today, the chance of anything resembling the once great Movie of the Week formula is gone. I remember another Movie of the Week that I think had George C Scott in it as a man who was bit by a rabid skunk and slowly went mad - wish I could remember what that was. Anyway, you just never knew when you were going to run into something good - but with three channels, you didn't have much choice!
Boomtown (2002)
I'm still crying this show is done!
I just finished watching the final four episodes - and it is a crying shame this show is canceled. A great ensemble show that is exactly what other ensemble shows have tried to be since Hill Street. I haven't had anything this smart to watch since Homicide (sorry I refuse to pay for HBO). Good luck to the cast and crew - looking forward to seeing more from all.
Underworld (2003)
I am stunned at the raves on this board for this dog!
It is a sad comment when the best I can say about a movie is that it had incredible sound design. Otherwise, this movie is a dog and don't let anyone else fool you. Not an ounce of humor in what Beckinsdale said in an interview was supposed to be "camp." I couldn't help but wonder why even in a hospital scene with just humans no one could turn on a d**n light! I had a flicker of hope when long asleep vampire leader Viktor is resurrected, but my hopes were soon dashed by tooo many car commercials that seem to appear out of nowhere as our main character screeches around town. Stay home and rent Blade 1 or 2 - and that is a scary thought! Even "The Keep" was better as a bad movie!
Adaptation. (2002)
Overrated
Interesting and disappointing - entirely overrated. A lot of nothing about nothing - please don't tell me that was the point. Not in the same league with Malkovich. I was waiting for the payoff for Act 3 and none came. You're not missing anything if skip you skip this - sorry, Nick Cage not withstanding.
We Were Soldiers (2002)
An honorable homage to our heroes
Paramount had a pretty good year with other films so I can't really see them getting behind this one come Oscar nomination time - especially considering the early release. That's a shame. Nobody said we were right in Vietnam, this picture only tries to tell the story of the PEOPLE who were involved. So take it as that, an honorable homage to them - and well worth your time. Take a few moments to pause and read the names of the men who died in this battle. They deserve at least that - even if this film does not get the Oscar exposure it warrants.
Kate & Leopold (2001)
Cinematography and writing drew me in
Honestly, my wife rented this and I wasn't planning on watching - but the luscious cinematography and some interesting writing drew me in. Hugh Jackman sealed the deal with his totally straight portrayal - this guy's earning power can only go up! Looking for some fluff and a laugh? It's better than most of the romantic comedy crap out there. Not a waste of time if you are in the mood to have something wash over you.
Rushmore (1998)
Too bad these kinds of movies don't sell.
I taped Rushmore from Comedy Central a week or so ago and just got around to watching it last night. This is a great movie - but you know why it didn't go over at the box office. How do you sell such a complex, character study in one line? You see it's about this kid, and a guy he meets, and a teacher he falls for, and goes a bit bonkers . . . But that just can't convey how deeply touching and thought provoking this movie is. Just watch it and enjoy how it works on so many levels. One more note - Bill Murray shows talent that has been lacking from him of late (see Osmosis Jones). When Murray as Blume finally realizes who Max's father is - a half second reaction sells it! Great.
