Wow this was incredible - the first time through in 2014 I saw it on a bad date ( true story ) and I think I was so tainted by the date it left a bad taste in my mouth and I have always said I didn't like it .
Fast forward ten years and my husband turns it on because he is a big fan - I get sucked in somewhere near the end and feel like I am seeing an entirely new movie - go back the same day and watch from the start and it turns out - everyone has been right all along - what a freaking masterpiece .
First of all the storyline itself was epic - survival and exploration and love and loyalty and betrayal and fear and hope - all put into a plot that could have been so complicated it was no good but they somehow kept it on the right side of that line - maybe you can't understand the exact science but the premise is easy enough and if you just go with it - it's great . I also loved the "heart of darkness " reference - great book within a great film.
The casting was really incredible - the young and adult counterparts were matched so well and the character development for both major and minor characters was so well done .
The message was so powerful , the tie in with the Dust Bowl was brilliant and the love stories ( both romantic , familial and for mankind ) felt authentic and well delivered. 2:49 didn't feel too long - it felt just right . The montage scene when Murph figures it all out is amazing and I just loved the whole thing - so don't be like me and appreciate the first time ( and on the next 10 rewatches )

This was a unique way of telling an important story - and really a story within a story.
Obviously any account of WW2 that helps show the magnitude of tragedy and sacrifice and death is worthwhile - that is why we have so many films and books - because we recognize the need to remember it and pass it on .
That was at the core of this film - the tragedy . Within that was a personal tragedy and a personal need to do something .
Lee was a complex character and was acted very very well by Winslet - who in my opinion is a genius every time . This was an important reminder of how valuable media is and that ordinary humans do extraordinary things .
The story was a 10/10 and I loved it for that - film wise it left some things to be desired in terms of pacing and character development .
Totally worth the time - quality but not great .

This is the BEST animated movie I have seen in years - maybe not the most enjoyable ( a little slow at times and not as funny as say , Trolls 3) BUT the message was amazing - and it was so well executed .
I have seen many criticisms of this movie based on fire being a bad representation of immigrants because they actually could hurt XYZ or water cannot possibly go up through storm drains or fire can't exist in a bubble - but let's remember this is a movie with animated characters who do many many things that defy the realm of real - walk , talk and have personalities to list a few ! If you are willing to look at it in the way it was meant to be - it's incredibly moving and a great allegory for immigration and racial integration and stereotypes and a desire to increase understating and the power of family and sacrifice and willingness to adjust for others and on and on and on . Culminating in the power of diversity and forging a new path and the universal desire we have of a love of family and acceptance .
Fire is in fact a great allegorical representation of immigrant in the sense that fire is least understood and perceived as dangerous - the "other " elements can integrate just fine but the system excludes fire because they view them as dangerous and different - hello ? Have we seen America ( or anywhere western lately ) or even going back into history - those who were different were viewed as dangerous and still are - what a powerful message to send to kids - make some room and learn to lean in and integrate together - it makes all of society stronger - this is literally how America was built and we have lost that somehow .
The end had me in straight up tears and I absolutely loved the "Ellis Island " scene at the start ( brilliant ) and the goodbye scene at the end - really ties it all together and leaves you with hope and desire to do your part - learn a new language , visit a new place and get to know your neighbors ( in every sense of the word )
This was great and I really do not understand the bad reviews .
