This is solid 7 out of 10. I felt as tho we weren't given enough details of the "story", before joining in on the movie. I think if there was flashback or two, or if the movie began about a year or two before the actions took place, the current situation would have meant more. I didn't feel I knew any of the characters, so I was not able to really care all that much to what happened to them. Acting was suburb, and the premise was right on. No sugar coating in the ending, and the costumes and "feel" of the scenery brought me to the 1800s. Overall, it was good, not great.
Getting past the fact that Leo is way too young looking for Kate, this really was a great modern film. Every time I see it, I find something new to like about it. Knowing the ending before going in (from a historical perspective) does not dampen the excitement that leads up to the inevitable. Costumes are divine, and although Kate overacts (kinda sounds like a breathless Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz occasionally), the acting is believable. The recreation of the Titanic is amazing. Considering this is not the typical film I would enjoy (I tend to avoid over-blown Hollywood "blockbusters"), it was extremely enjoyable.
The first time I saw this, I was very young and fell asleep midway thru. I finally saw it on the re-release cause I was sick of being one of the few people that never saw it all the way thru. I guess I would have been better off staying awake in '77 cause I really was not impressed. Maybe back in '77, when special effects were not as good as they are today, I would have been impressed. And to be honest, I am not a sci-fi nut. I can see the attraction, but I will never buy into the hype. It is decent....ok, at best, in my book.
