Considering that Gladiator 2 is the film nobody asked for, it was a rather enjoyable sequel. Obviously, it doesn't come close to its predecessor, especially compared to its emotional weight, but it delivers a fun watching experience with great action sequences, grandiose production design and worthy performances of its cast, especially Pascal and Denzel.
Film builds itself on that popular cultural perception of the Roman Empire, but since this is a historical fiction piece, I don't mind inaccuracies, anachronisms and similar. Scott is more comfortable in this subgenre instead of real history works like Napoleon should have been.
Finally, I hope it does well box office-wise, because historical spectacles are not the films that studios are eager to invest in due to budget requirements, but if this film succeeds, maybe we could see more of them in cinemas. Cheers!
