Read All About It! (1979)
Read All About It! With interesting people there's a mystery to be solved...
The show is set in the fictitious town of Herbertville, where 11-year-old Chris Anderson inherits his Uncle Derek's coach house seven years after Derek's mysterious disappearance; Derek is now legally presumed dead. The coach house contains two artificially intelligent robots built by Derek: Otto, a device which communicates by printing its thoughts on paper; and Theta, a talking computer with an integrated monitor. The terms of Derek's will stipulate that Chris can only use the coach house before he's 21 if it's for a worthwhile purpose, so he and his friends Lynne and Samantha start a newspaper called The Herbertville Chronicle.
First season-
In episode two, the kids discover the coach house also houses a transporter which allows teleportation to and from the galaxy of Trialviron. After inadvertently triggering the transporter, Lynne and Samantha are trapped within Trialviron by Duneedon, the despotic ruler of the galaxy, but manage to escape. This launches a season-long serial, in which the newspaper is focused on unraveling a conspiracy headed by Herbertville mayor Don Eden (the alter ego of Duneedon) who wants to claim King's Park as his own to get a rare mineral he needs to invade Earth.
The transporter is also able to transport literary characters into the coach house, such as the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Merlin the Magician from King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable, and Captain Hook from Peter Pan. These characters sometimes help, and sometimes hinder, the trio's investigation into the conspiracy.
Seen in this serial are Chris, Samantha and Lynne. Recurring players include Duneedon (a.k.a. Mayor Don Eden); Duncan O'Regan (self-described 'security guard extraordinaire' who also seems to be part of the conspiracy); Dr. Crystal Couplet (a friendly Trialveron resident and poet who speaks in rhyme); Joseph Walker (an 80-year-old Herbertville resident who has valuable memories of the town's past); and Ann Blake (a Herbertville town councilor). Chris' Uncle Derek is also eventually found alive, being held captive by Duneedon, and is seen in several episodes.
Second season-
The second season also consists of 20 episodes, but is divided into separate smaller arcs.
The War of 1812 (Episodes 1 - 5): Samantha and Chris witness a young boy, who is handling a compass, suddenly vanish. Using the same compass, they are transported back to the War of 1812. There they discover the boy, Alex Tanner, has been falsely accused of being a deserter-and he will be executed unless they can rescue him.
Seen in this serial are Chris, Samantha, Lynne (who stays in touch with the time travelers back at the coach house), and Alex (who is introduced in this serial). Recurring players include a brief appearance by Uncle Derek; also seen are Sir Isaac Brock, Laura Secord, and in one episode, Graham Greene as John Nelson.
The Book Destroyer (Episodes 6 - 9): Lynne and Alex venture into Book World, after discovering that a shadowy figure called The Book Destroyer is systematically erasing beloved characters from literature.
Seen in this serial are Lynne and Alex. Samantha appears only at the very end, setting up the next serial. Chris does not appear; it is mentioned he is recovering from a sprained ankle. Recurring players include The Book Destroyer.
Samantha Moves Away (Episodes 10 - 13): The gang tries to adjust when a devastated Samantha announces that her family is moving to Victoria, B. C. This is the only serial to contain no science fiction or fantasy elements (aside from the continuing presence of Otto and Theta).
Seen in this serial are Chris, Samantha, Lynne and Alex. Recurring players include Rita Zakowski, a local author whom Sam befriends.
The Ghost (Episodes 14 - 15): During summer vacation, the ghost of the first principal of the Herbertville School takes up residence in the coach house.
Seen in this serial are Chris and Lynne. Alex is noted as being at camp. Recurring players include Ernest W. Wetherby, a fussy, strict ghost who insists on neatness and correct grammar.
Duneedon's Return (Episodes 16 - 20): Dr. Crystal Couplet requires the kids' help (and the transporter) to evacuate Trialveron, which is about to go nova. But Duneedon has his own agenda, which may involve returning to conquer Earth, while trapping the kids in a galaxy-wide explosion.
Seen in this serial are Chris, Lynne and Alex. Samantha makes a surprise re-appearance at the very end. Recurring players include Duneedon and Dr. Crystal Couplet.
Storylords (1984)
Great educational children TV series to promote reading quality books
Storylords consists of twelve 15-minute programs which focus on building reading comprehension strategies through the use of fantasy. The storyline consists of a young boy named Norbert who has been apprenticed by Lexor - an old Storylord from the land of Mojuste - to defend Mojuste's citizens against the wicked Storylord, Thorzuul. Thorzuul seeks to turn all of those who can't understand what they read into stone statues for his collection.
The first few episodes follow a basic formula: first, Norbert is summoned by Lexor through a magic ring to enter the land of Mojuste and help a certain citizen solve a riddle or word puzzle given by Thorzuul. He then travels to Mojuste via the "Bike-o-Tron" (a magical stationary exercise bike in his garage), while chanting:
Thunder and Lightning, Trumpets and Drums, Readers Rejoice, A Storylord Comes!
In Mojuste, Norbert meets with Thorzuul's potential victim. By recalling a recent lesson from his teacher, Mrs. Framish, he helps the citizen solve the riddle just in time before Thorzuul arrives on his motorcycle (driven by his chauffeur, Milkbreath) and discovers that his plans have been thwarted.
About halfway through the series, Norbert's sister, Mandy, becomes curious about her brother's secret life and decides to follow him to the garage. She touches him, just as he is traveling to Mojuste on the Bike-o-Tron and is transported to the land with him, later to become his assistant.
In the last four episodes, Thorzuul decides to stop targeting Mojuste's citizens and instead uses his schemes against Norbert and Mandy themselves.
Tomes and Talismans (1986)
The post-apocalyptic library education show
Quite possibly the finest post-apocalyptic educational series about library science ever produced by Mississippi Public Television.
In 2123 humanity is evacuating Earth for the White Crystal Solar System, due to pollution and an attack carried out by the nefarious Wiper race, a group of aliens that are determined to interfere with communication and data technology. The One World Order is preparing a complete library of all Human knowledge which is hidden underground. A desperate search for an important missing volume of recent history begins in the library in the outskirts of the city. The library team leader, Ms. Bookhart, is stranded in her bookmobile and is suddenly metabolically suspended for 100 years by a being known only as "The Universal Being".
She awakens in a world under the control of the Wipers having been discovered and awoken by four children-Aphos, Abakas, Varian, and Lidar-members of another group of pacifistic, tech-savvy extraterrestrials known as "The Users". The children, along with Ms. Bookhart, rediscover the hidden library, and in the course of the series she teaches them how to use it. When the Wipers lay siege to the User base with an entrapping shield and plan an attack, the kids and Ms. Bookhart (later assisted by Colonel Holon, the father of Aphos and Abakas) must decipher a cryptic message from the Universal Being to find a way to defeat the Wipers and save their people. Yes, the world is saved through mastery of library science.
Made in 1985 as a 13-episode serial drama, and (obviously) intended to teach children about various library and research concepts, Tomes & Talismans is now extremely dated and clearly had a rather limited budget, but it gets the job done and remains surprisingly entertaining and even intriguing throughout, less because of the educational segments and more because of the ongoing mystery that must be solved.
The Mind's Treasure Chest (1991)
Best advertisement for going to the public library and doing your own research from books
Jack Patterson and Richard Manhouse are opponents in the race for student council president of their high school. Richard is the "smart choice," an intellectual who is always on top of things. Jack, too, is usually on top but his confident politicking has no substantial content: Jack is a master of hollow rhetoric. But, as the election draws near, Jack finds himself trammeled by fact-master Richard in their history class which is taught by Mr. Ekenwall, a teacher who doesn't take kindly to equivocation. Jack comes to the realization that he simply doesn't know the facts for tomorrow's assignment on John Kennedy and the Cuban crises, so in desperation he heads off into the mythical reaches of the school library. A sympathetic classmate and a bewildered librarian help make Jack's overnight stay in the library the adventure of his life.
This 90 minute video is a librarian's dream. Jack even needs directions to the school library to begin his quest! Once there he is obviously unclear on the concept as he expects all the answer to somehow come looking for him. Subtly, easily, the story starts with encyclopedias, then the card catalog (the automated one, like ours, comes later), then the Readers' Guide (ditto automated periodical indexing), to magazines on microfilm, and even to footnotes in books and the concept of the credibility (and honesty) of providing references.
Throughout, The Mind's Treasure Chest is as charming as an episode of Parker Lewis Can't Lose, instructive but not didactic, laugh-out-loud funny but not patronizing. Jack's character is acted well as are the roles of sympathetic and cajoled Samantha and Carla Sanchez, the librarian. Carla, jolted from her slumber by paranoid concern over the absence of the 1962 volume of the Readers' Guide at closing time that night heads back to the school at midnight in her bunny slippers and "027.8" (Dewey # for school libraries) t-shirt. She surprises our ex-information illiterate and his accomplice as they attempt to "break into" the university's library holdings using the librarian's computer. Jack's doe eyes (and glazed expression as future scenarios of an impostor exposed play themselves unhappily out in his fertile imagination) make another convert to the cause (his cause) and, with Carla's won-over enthusiasm, the trio heads over to the Mecca of knowledge: the university library. There, unchallenged, they use automated versions of the card catalog and Readers' Guide as well as the vertical (or pamphlet) file to ferret out the last bit of evidence for Jack's presentation, now only a few hours away.
