If this movie is not an Oscar contender, then I don't know what the Academy purpose! Absolutely extraordinary! Moving true story, heartbreaking, inspirational, smart, and let's the world know that you cannot place people in one box and that's all they are. It also shows the strength and love of a family. The actors and direction are phenomenal. Chiwetel Ejiofor has proven his character building in past performances but his directing talents are just as great. He made each character important to the story and the audience care about them. He made no one a hero in this story; they were flawed but you could empathize with what they did and why. I can't say enough about Mary J. Blige! She's a Renaissance woman of the 21st century. A complete entertainer!! This holiday season, take a look at this movie and be moved in your spirit.
For those giving this special low ratings, the point of it has gone totally over your head. Or, you may be missing an empathy mechanism for others' pain, strength, redemption, celebration, joy, and overcoming. This is how you get your flowers before you leave this world. Must of us will not get this until someone eulogized us. This is an appreciation for living and strength after a traumatic event in their life. For those who expecting Jamie Foxx to just ignore the health journey he went through and tell jokes, it's clear you have not had or been around these type of life altering experiences. It will change how you look at yourself, your career, family, and friends. This special is just not about comedy, it is autobiographical. Great job Jamie Foxx!! We love you and you are wholely with us!!
No, it is not the original 'Good Times', and obviously it is not suppose to be. But, it has great humor & the look is vintage (e.g. Fat Albert Show). I laughed out loud a few times and the characters featured (Elon Musk, Maya Angelou) added to the funny. And for those making a big deal about a baby drug dealer, this is not a new concept of the adult situation baby in the Seth MacFarlane universe (see Family Guy). So, I doubt race (ism) has anything to do with it. This also reminds me of The PJ's of the early 2000's. Some people on their high horse about a series that is not to be taken that seriously. The original 'Good Times' was a cultural phenomenon realized many years after it ended (along with other Norman Lear produced sitcoms). However, at the time it premiered, it's premise was not revered by many Black Americans who did not want to see "the struggle" on T. V., along with a little clown-nery.
