An accurate portrayal of the "bar girl" life cycle.
17 August 2012
I rate this movie 8, not because of the scares or supernatural effects. The rating is entirely based on the performances of the actresses and accurate depiction of how many girls get conned into a life of prostitution.

It's worth a watch for anyone interested in Thailand or other countries such as Philippines where girls can be rented at bars and clubs. It puts a human perspective on the whole affair which those frequenting the places might not think about or choose to ignore.

I'm not sure whether the movie glorifies the empowerment of girls who choose to work as prostitutes because of the high pay or condemns the exploitation of the innocent who are made to believe they're being done a favor when they're told someone *might* have "work" for them, during the initial stages of recruitment, keeping the facade until it is too late to back out.

The director and his friends certainly enjoy the Thai night life privately. The movie stands on its own though and I feel it does a good job at removing the veil on the business. How people react must be a personal decision. Both sides are shown, which avoids a preachy or too exploitative feeling.

The performances by the actresses were particularly authentic, considering most of them grew up in slums or work as porn stars or bar girls. The main actress had never acted before and donated her entire earnings to her sick mother. Eerily similar to the circumstances in the movie, although the real life events apparently had a happier outcome.

Though the "scary" parts of the movie don't mesh well with Western ideas of ghosts and magic, it closely fits with popular myth and superstition in Thailand and other neighboring countries. Especially the idea of human monsters that can feast on other people due to a variety of specific circumstances.

The sex in the movie is very low key. I think we spotted a couple of nip slips. The few sex scenes are more suggestive than explicit and they don't last very long. There is a fair amount of dancing, but it's also tame. The girls are pretty though and it's enjoyable to watch.

It's not a masterpiece, but to my knowledge it's unique in its scope and subject matter. The lead actress did a superb job and I hope we see more from her in the future.

My wife and I both enjoyed this movie and I think anyone with an open mind and an interest in eastern Asia will too.

My wife and I love it!

Maybe we have a thing for crass humor or maybe we just love Stevie Ryan? Either way, the show which features numerous skits, often with recurring casts, is a blast to watch. It's not for kids or overly sensitive adults, but it's great fun for people who don't take things too seriously.

In the show, Stevie will impersonate any number of characters in parody skits. I haven't watched half the shows she parodies, but just seeing the skits I immediately get an idea of the original shows. I think that illustrates how clever her show really is, and underlines the horrible quality of the original shows.

The show has gotten a pretty bad rating by some people here and I'm merely adding an extra opinion. I probably wouldn't have watched the show myself, had I seen it with a sub 5 or 4 rating, but I am glad I picked it up on a whim and I think people owe it to themselves to try at least one episode.

It can pay off to watch the show from the beginning, since a few skits return and evolve across episodes.

I recommend watching the show with a good friend or spouse who isn't intimated by a sexy comediatrix doing her thing to make you laugh :)

A vital movie everyone should watch.
16 August 2010
I finished watching this movie less than an hour ago and I'm deeply touched by the information presented in it. The documentary is well structured and presents an overwhelming amount of evidence which will change the way anyone thinks about bottled and municipal water. Both the "manufacture" of the water itself, and also where the bottles come from, where they go after use and how they influence our lives while they're with us. I see this movie has only had one review and a few votes since it came on this site. That is a crying shame because this movie needs to be seen by every single person alive. The willful absence of major companies such as Coke, Pepsi and Nestle is extremely telling in light of all the material presented. One can only hope that the small voice of this film will be heard over the huge booming commercial machine that these and other companies represent in the popular media. If you haven't seen this movie, simply watch it. It's that good and the information is something everyone should know.

Beowulf (2007)
10/10
Amazing movie!
26 June 2009
First of all, this movie is amazing. Period! Unlike some of the people who have commented, I do CG/3d graphics myself; and let me tell you, this movie is a masterpiece! The amount of work that must have gone into Beowulf absolutely shames even great CG movies like Shrek.

I remember reading Beowulf as a kid, being fascinated by dragons and legends. The legend, the original Beowulf, is dry reading for all but the most devoted. Yes, it has action and intrigue, but you'll need patience and an ability to digest old style prose to appreciate it.

This movie distills Beowulf into an accessible and modern adaptation which is beyond compare.

Some people think the CG aspect works against the movie. I beg to differ! It enhances it completely. Things that would be impossible or awkward to do with live actors is seamlessly done with CG. The action sequences are incredible and unlike any other movie. Even Lord of the Rings, a great master piece with amazing fight scenes, doesn't have anything even close to the final battle in Beowulf.

I saw the regular "2d" version, and it was great. I cannot comment on the one enhanced for blue/red 3d glasses, as they usually give me a headache to wear.

Criticizing this movie for poor CG is a show of incredible ignorance. I applaud the effort by the team behind this movie. It's a monumental achievement! If only I could be so lucky as to work with talented people like the ones who crafted this movie. I noticed, in many scenes, the utter attention to detail that went into making them. Things you may ordinarily not think about, but which stand out to those who deal with CG on a regular basis.

It's true that the people are not 100% real. It IS a CG movie. People do have a slightly waxy look to them, but it actually enhanced the movie for me. After a few minutes, it really worked to help suspend disbelief, because the whole world is complete. Everything looks like it belongs. No green screens here. No wires to remove. No compositing CG into "live" footage. No, it's all done seamlessly and it works on so many levels.

The story itself is simple enough, but also engaging. I can imagine the only people turned off by it must be film critics who are too stuffy to enjoy the good things in life.

Yes, an action filled fantasy adventure is not for everyone. But neither is "Driving Miss Daisy." Yet, you don't see people who are not a fan of that genre try and tear it down. The fantasy movie genre has too many real life trolls, unfortunately.

For everyone who was ever a kid, and anyone who doesn't mind extremely well done CG, watch Beowulf, you will thoroughly enjoy it!

Cute girl, swords and zombies - what else do you want?
1 September 2008
Pacing, is the answer. This movie is terribly paced.

This movie is essentially two movies in one. Zombie flick and family drama. It could probably work, but in this movie it doesn't. The setup is terribly corny and if it strikes you as odd, and strangely familiar, that a little group of people can take down a guy that supposedly has filled the world with zombies, you're not alone.

That's not really giving away too much. There are a few predictable twists and turns you can see for yourself, but here's my list of what would have made this movie a little better:

1. Focus on either the family drama OR the zombie killing. Director/writer too inexperienced to handle both properly and the result is a messy concoction.

2. The main character wears a skimpy outfit. And to be fair, it's the main attraction of the movie. So, why isn't she showing it off more? I remarked to my friend that the movie would have been lots better if it was just her doing pole dancing for 30 minutes. Maybe with zombies :)

3. The final showdowns are too long and simply too boring. LOTS of action, to be sure, but you're bored watching them. Tighter editing and pacing would have helped some, but you really don't care about any of the characters due to poor development and pacing throughout the movie.

4. The characters in the movie are two dimensional, extremely so. Precious film time is wasted on many occasions and unfortunately that leaves less time to flesh out the leads. That includes the long winded flashback sequence that runs throughout the movie at intervals.

There's more, but you'll see all that for yourself if you watch it.

It's shot on video. While that in itself is not a problem, when everything else is amateurish, it makes you feel like you're watching something hacked together in a high school film lab. There's a lack of contrast throughout the movie that makes it drab and bland to look at.

There are two high points of the movie. The first is the fight scenes. When they're good, they resemble something out of a violent video game. The fast action actually makes the rest of the movie pale in comparison. If only the whole movie could keep that high speed and action. The second high point is, again, her skimpy outfit. It fits a crazy universe, but it also underlines that the rest of the movie is underdeveloped.

The movie deserves a 4 for being mildly entertaining, but add an extra star for the two high points.

Waste of your time, unless you like to laugh at horror.
29 August 2008
This movie was barely tolerable. Another reviewer compared it to other horror movies and called them crap in comparison. I guess he was paid to do so, or simply has no taste; This movie is one big cliché and pales next to the movies he listed.

Where other movies have some inventiveness going for them, this movie has none. It's a standard, two people in a house have bad things happen to them, scenario.

Not in a good way either. Not in a way that makes your skin creep or wonder what's next. I confess, the movie had me wondering at the start. It was promising. About a third to a half into the movie I realized that the promise was broken. The suspense was turning from clever into stupid.

The main characters display an amazing lack of brains throughout their ordeal. Without giving away anything, I can say they act in the same way as the teenagers do in Scream. You know that list the horror-geek has? Don't do this, don't do that? Yes, in this movie they break just about every item on the list. Yawn!

I cannot fault the actors- they did an okay job- it's the director's job to make sure the movie is good. You can recast actors, you can rewrite scripts, you can improvise. But he who holds responsibility for what goes on and off the cutting table is the director.

I would recommend against watching this movie, unless you like to yell at the screen because the protagonists are being stupid. In my opinion, the two main leads should more closely read their next scripts before accepting them. It was a disappointing experience seeing them go through the motions of "look at me, I'm a stupid victim" in ordinary lack-of-ideas-horror movie fashion.

There is plenty of GOOD horror out there, but most of it goes under the radar, unfortunately.

With all this said, you might even like this movie. I didn't, but then again I have an aversion towards open stupidity. At least trick me into thinking I watched a smart movie. But... no. That didn't happen this time.

A quiet but interesting movie.
6 June 2008
I watched this movie a while back, and while the details may be a bit fuzzy - the memory of this movie is a fond one. The events in the movie may not be entirely original, but the ending was satisfyingly unique enough for me.

The movie moves along at a somewhat slow pace, but it works well and I'm happy about it - rather than being an all out constant fright fest where the scares simply become yawns.

Asian horror has slowly become one of those things you either hate or love. A lot of people have also decided to love a few and hate the rest. This is unfortunate, I think. Simply because some elements are familiar, there is no reason to disqualify a movie because of it. Especially if the elements are mixed up enough to make an interesting final product.

This movie is one of those I feel anyone with an interest in Asian horror should watch.

Oh my god, global IQ must have dropped by a hundred points.
26 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is horrible. Let's examine why... Is it the cinematography? Nope. It's fine and has some good moments. Is it the sound? Nah, it's forgettable but must have done its job. Is it the acting? Well. No. It's actually pretty good.

Then what is it? It's the story! The plot line for the movie reads well and you get the feeling this is a great gem of a movie. So there is clearly potential there. What is unfortunate is what happens once the movie starts unfolding. The main character turns out to be a gutless, ball-less and altogether sorry excuse for a man with a spine, not to mention he is stupid to the point where you feel like slapping some sense into him.

I don't know about you, but if my driving partner turned up dead at a gas station, the first thing I would do is scream HELP! The next thing is call the police myself. What does the protagonist do here? He stashes the body in the desert. Gah. Even after the movie ends on a supposedly good note, he can still get busted for this. Stupid stupid stupid.

Second, letting two, highly unattractive, girls push him around again and again is just inexcusable. It isn't because of sexual tension, so why is it? Sure, you can build a movie around it, but you'd need some kind of proper motivation. At first there IS no motivation. He should have kicked them out of the car from the start. Then once they start acting up, he should have kicked them out again. The occasions where he can kick them out are numerous, but instead he acts like a complete retard and just lets them walk all over him. Argh!

This movie sucks for this reason. Stupid, gutless main character.

It could have been great, if they had prepared a stronger motivation for the guy to let the girls walk all over him. Unfortunately, it was just a teeth grinding experience watching the guy getting walked all over and lapping it up like a good little dog.

I don't usually condone violence towards women, but if this guy had had any spine at all, he would have indulged in a bit of "see my fist? Taste my fist!" OR, he could have used several opportunities to run some psychological warfare of his own. But, alas, stupidity and an empty ball-sack is all that predominates here.

Please, stay far away from this movie, unless you like to have your intelligence insulted, and enjoy the feeling of wanting to beat some sense into the main character.
