Sure, the movie starts off relatively easy. And yeah, acting wise its nowhere close to what mcconaughey and hathaway can deliver..
But!
Give this one time to breathe and to unfold, it needs a little space to explain itself. After one hour one might think, "yeah alright i get it" but no, one should go deeper than that, wait till the end to soak in every last detail and than reflect on it, and maybe one might see and understand what this is really all about.
My personal guess is, most of those bad reviews stopped thinking and digging at the one hour mark and decided, "this is my truth now", and yes, if one does this, its a pretty standard movie, but if one allows itself to fall a bit further down the layers, a surprise might wait and present a deeper truth, deeper meaning behind all of it.
Definitely not one of my big favorites but I enjoyed it very much!

Whats to say about that movie..
Surely this movie is not for mainstream audiences.
Monroe gave us some form of solid performance and Cage, well he was somewhere else i think, but convinced me after all.
The rest of the cast felt a bit weak and underdeveloped, but brought into the story, what they're supposed to.
Yeah storyline... Not quite sure what to think about that.
I liked the idea and I really liked the way it was told, but somehow for me it wasn't enough.. Though I know barley 2h is already long for some, I think a bit longer for a few more nuances would have helped.
The turn it takes half way through was surprisingly good and in some way it felt finished for me at the end, so thats nice..
All in all a strange but not really bad experience but definitely no rewatch for me.

Being a fan of lovecrafts storys and a fan of nic cage, this one had to be a must watch for me.
Even though the storylines of H. P.s books are almost always the same, this movie adaptation made a pretty good job in telling the tale.
Obviously it's some kind of a B Movie and the FXs aren't top notch, BUT it's rarely just about that. The main actors delivered a pretty OK job, Nic Cage takes it away and clearly had a-lot of fun!
Side characters are a bit weak, but they're doing what they're supposed to.
Ambience is lovely and there are quite a few beautiful pictures and even the soundtrack pretty well placed.
I would dare to say it's one of the if not the best film adaption to lovecrafts works.
I'm glad to have seen it, but wouldn't give it a second view.
