This movie, to its detriment, is saddled with a totally uninspired poorly marketable title that does not do the movie justice.
Framed, I guess, around the complicated relationship between an ex-con brother and a black adopted 14-year-old brother, this, in reality, is a family drama turned-crime drama turned-road trip turned-crime spree turned-alien sci fi adventure.
Therein lies the problem. The movie is like 3-4 separate movies, each with its own tone and architecture.
The futuristic weapon premise is, to be fair, unique and intriguing, but it's strung along in a somewhat quirky - almost campy and comic bookish - way.
Older brother Jimmy is unlikable in every way. Dennis Quaid provides a cameo-ish appearance. Zoe Kravitz, playing a stripper, is virtually merely a prop, as we learn nothing about her backstory and she inexplicably disappears for most of the final act.
The effects and heavy sci-fi laden finale is actually jaw-droppingly good - and if there was a movie just of these people's journey and adventures on earth I would watch that movie in a heartbeat. BUT, we didn't get that. What we got was a mish mash of takeaway messages.
All that said, the finale was worth waiting for.
