According to this movie we don't fully understand how tornadoes work and I'd say we don't really know how movies work either. Here they put together plenty of pretty people and put them in danger with lots of action. But somehow it doesn't add up to summer blockbuster movie fun. The young English actress playing the central character is not very interesting and nor is the handsome cowboy. Even though I don't remember much about the original, I know that Hellen Hunt and Bill Paxton were much more compelling to watch. The idea of stopping a tornado using water absorbing particles like you put in diapers didn't seem plausible to me and how scanning a tornado would help was never explained. The action is fine but it's surrounded by 90% CGi which means you can do a lot but it doesn't always look real. This is a great movie to watch on an airplane or maybe cool off on a hot day like I did. If you have air conditioning at home you may want to just rent the original.
The movie starts out well enough but then gets stuck like its main character. A movie needs interesting dialogue or a great plot or both. While this movie has some good moments, it eventually drags. They have to pull off kind of magic trick that movies do where you forget about logic and get lost in the story. You might have a lot of time watching this movie to look around and think, "Hey, this is kind of dumb". I'll give them a lot of artistic license, but a lot of this plot essentially revolves around a McMuffin that you need to just accept without any real explanation. How are all of those Apes eating in their giant seashore "kingdom"? I know, it's a movie about talking apes, but you gotta be at least a little clever in the writing. Give me a little something to suspend my disbelief with. Finally, sometimes the CGI, this is basically an animated movie, it completely convincing, but at other times it doesn't fool my monkey eyes at all. Finally, since the human, Mae, becomes important to the movie, she needs to be developed more. And if these apes are so smart why didn't any of them notice she was wearing pants. If I was a talking ape, I'd have used my words and asked where she got the fancy clothes that none of the other echos had. Just say'n.
This was well written and somewhat poignant dramedy. A lot of people here hated the Tom Holland character, but I found him funny for the most part and all the main characters were realistic. Having gotten divorced in similar circumstances, apart from being in my 40's, I could relate to the characters and their journey. I enjoyed the scenery along the trip so I thought that was a good plot device. The son was an annoying spoiled little turd, but that's not unusual, or permanent. Can you overplay a son wanting his father's approval while seemingly trying to push him away or a father trying to hard to please his child while also being a jerk at times? It all rang true to me and I laughed a lot.
