Carnage (2011)
Should be called "Garbage" instead of Carnage
I found nothing appealing nor redeeming about this movie. However, the high rating here certainly speaks to what many other people obviously view as entertaining. I personally find nothing entertaining about Africans being called "Sudan Sambos," nor is there anything amusing about an 11 year old boy being called a gay slur simply because he was the recipient of being hit with a stick by another kid. This movie seemed to imply that nobody should give a damn about atrocities that take place in other parts of the world if they aren't directly affected by it. Likewise, it makes fun of women (particularly feminists) who actually give a damn about people who aren't in their very small privileged bubble, claiming that men aren't attracted to women who care about such things. Meanwhile, Michael rants that his wife dressed him up "like a liberal" for the meeting. He had on a sweater, khakis, and sneakers. Are those three basic articles of clothing somehow limited to liberals these days? The Alan character even said that listening to Jane Fonda made him want to go out and buy a KKK poster. So hearing someone espouse against injustice and inequality makes you want to affiliate with a hate group? These people are repulsive. I'm clearly not in the target demographic for this movie. I would surmise that if you enjoy this movie, you very likely look like the people in it and agree with the very limited world view of all of the characters (except for Penelope). If you're part of the self-absorbed, "everybody is too PC these days" ilk, then you'll probably enjoy this garbage.
Girls Against Boys (2012)
Worth a Watch
Seems like most of the men on here didn't understand the movie at all. If you weren't so busy foolishly whining about feminism, perhaps you would have understood that the majority of the film is simply a revenge fantasy. Lu is an aspect of Shae's personality that she turns to to help her deal with the break up and the horrific trauma of being raped. Not a single one of your precious men was actually killed. However, Shae was actually violently raped. Somehow, that part didn't seem to bother most of the men on here one bit.
Welcome Home (2018)
Ridiculous
Was this movie just made for folks who want to see Emily Ratajkowski scantily clad? That's about the only people I would recommend it to. I don't fall in that category, so this gets the lowest score for me. I actually like Aaron Paul, and I felt this movie was a bit beneath him. But hey, he got paid to film a movie in a gorgeous Italy location, so I can't feel too badly for him. I'd never heard of this Emily girl before, but she is an atrocious actress. Just awful. Her character is also one of the most idiotic women I've ever seen on film. Even if you're blindfolded, who the hell can't tell the difference between their partner's touch and the touch of some random person? I don't care if he put on her boyfriend's cologne, his touch would not feel the same, his body hovering over hers would not feel the same, etc. But all she does is moan and arch like an empty-headed fool. This movie just annoyed me.
Motherland: Fort Salem (2020)
Great New Show!
Some of the reviews on here are hilarious! I've seen everything ranging from "they hate men" to "it's lesbian-friendly" (said as negative, mind you). Lesbian-friendly?? Oh, no! Not the lesbians! I haven't seen anything in the show so far that indicates a hatred of men. One man had wind thrown at him by a witch, but she was actually trying to save his life and he was being a condescending jerk. So perhaps that's viewed as hate. Other than that, both the heroes and the villains are all women. Which group of women you believe are the heroes and which are the villains will depend on your world view. If anything, men on the show are just kind of in the background. So far, they've played no significant role and none of the main characters are men. We know they exist, but they're neither really loved nor hated. I'm really enjoying the show. It's actually a rather unique take on witches (a twist on the old familiar Salem stories), military, patriotism, and feminism. If you're open to something new, I'd say definitely give it a try. If you're offended by strong female characters, witches, and/or lesbians, then this isn't for you.
A Ghost Story (2017)
For Those Comfortable with Silence
I truly enjoyed this movie. Actually, I enjoyed all of it with the exception of the scene where there's actually a lot of talking. One guy at a party going on and on about the futility of life and how we're all basically just dust in the wind, as if it was some unique revelation that only he had discovered and it was his duty to impart his wisdom to the masses. I hated that guy and I hated his pretentious speech. But I loved the rest of the movie. Most of the movie is very quiet and very still. l personally loved that. The parts that I loved seem to be the parts that most posters on here hate. But that's no surprise to me because most human beings can't stand silence. They can't stand being still for any longer than absolutely necessary. Just look at how many people are complaining about the pie scene! I personally felt that scene was very realistic of how some people deal with death and grief. I remember when my dad died, the house seemed so quiet even though he wasn't even a talkative man. But the lack of his presence made it quiet. After getting home from the funeral, my mother stood at the kitchen sink washing dishes that didn't need to be washed. I ate anything I could get my hands on. We did this in total silence. I now intentionally spend a couple hours a day in complete silence by myself. It is healing. But some people can't handle that in real life, let alone in a movie. If you're someone who needs excitement, excitement, excitement all the time then this movie is definitely not for you. However, if you're someone who understands the importance of introspection and that there is peace in being still, then I would highly suggest this movie despite the eye roll inducing speech by the obnoxious idiot at the party.
Locke (2013)
Misogynistic Rubbish
I actually had no problem with the movie being one guy in a car talking on the phone, as I tend to enjoy movies with a limited number of characters. However, I can someone tell me when 43 became a geriatric age for women? When Ivan is explaining his "one time" affair to his wife, he tells her that the woman was lonely and really old, like 43. He basically said he had sex with her because he felt sorry for her. Then when they find out the cord is wrapped around the baby's neck and they need to do a c-section, Bethan tells him that the doctors think she's "too old to push." What the hell? Women in their 40s give birth vaginally all the time. It was her baby's condition, not her age, that caused a problem. Ivan also makes a comment about her being old and lonely and this baby being her last chance at happiness. Between this man talking to his wife about how he only cheated one time (as if that makes it ok), and then describing the cheating as if his penis was just providing charity for the lonely, decrepit 43 year old woman, this movie came across as little more than a bit of misogynistic rubbish.
American Son (2019)
Excellent!
I can't believe some of the ignorant comments on here. This movie is excellent. It is also difficult and painful to watch. Those of you calling the mother "annoying" sound ridiculous. How would you feel if it was your child and you weren't getting any answers? Not to mention, the young cop was extremely condescending towards her. Asking if her son had gold teeth, tattoos, or a street name. Was she supposed to scrape and bow just to appease him when she was clearly being dismissed and disrespected? Those of you who think that kind of treatment doesn't really happen are deluding yourselves or being willfully obtuse. Those of you whining about how annoying Kerry Washington's character is obviously didn't bother to watch the entire movie. This is a huge part of the problem when it comes to any kind of discussion on race in this country. Nobody wants to feel uncomfortable, not even for a moment. You can't even sit through an entire movie without whining "oh my god she's pulling the race card!" Sadly, the people who are complaining about the movie, calling it racist, and refusing to even bother watching the whole movie are the ones who need to see it the most. You folks can keep burying your heads in the sand, but that does not change reality. Discussing issues of race is not in and of itself racist!! This is why race remains such a problem in this country. Some of you are immediately defensive whenever other people try to have a conversation with you about their existence and experience. If their experiences happen to not align with your fairy tale idea that racism doesn't exist and everything is all sunshine and lollipops, then you start whining about political correctness, claim that they're the ones being racist (the irony of that argument is overwhelming), and completely shut down. Essentially doing the adult equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears because you don't want to hear the truth. Grow up, folks! The truth isn't always easy to hear. That doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to it.
