My wife and I just saw this movie today with very little expectations, in the mood to laugh at something lighthearted... and that's for sure what we got! We didn't know any of the actors going into it, but felt they did well in pulling off some of the outrageous, only-in-rom-coms scenarios. Laughed out loud a handful of times!
At first I didn't realize the script was based on a Shakespeare, so was intrigued by all the artsy quotes scattered throughout the backgrounds of the movie. Made the whole thing feel like it had a little more substance that the average chick flick.
I think both of us were pleasantly surprised overall, and I'll probably keep an eye out for the DVD for a date night reviewing!
On a total side note: I saw how Emma Stone parodied the intro to the trailer for this movie, and was kind of disappointed at what felt like a mean-spirited jab? I was just starting to warm up to Emma Stone too, but didn't like to see her putting her fellow actors down (alongside some other schmuck), ESPECIALLY fellow actors who aren't as far along in their careers. I know ABY director Will Gluck seemed to take it well online, but still? Emma Stone kinda threw him (her former Easy A director) and his latest project under the bus. But, Anyone But You made nearly three times as much as Emma Stone's Poor Things, so maybe she's just a dying star whining on her way down. *shrugs*

Honestly, if I was writing this based on the first 30 minutes of the film, it probably would've landed at a 4/10 for me, but I found myself enjoying it more and more as it progressed. My wife and I went into it looking for a few hours' relaxation / a mindless popcorn movie, and that's what we got, so good job.
At first, I sorely missed some of the original film's actors, but as I sat there I realized that nostalgia was a big part of that for me. Also, NOW I can say how much I love the original actresses who played Gretchen, Janice, etc... but that's because I've seen them in movies since/they've had 20 years to grow on me. All that to say, I think the new cast needs to be given a chance, and I expect to like this movie more as time goes on and I've seen them in other projects.
I also think some characters were actually improved upon here. I liked both Damien and Karen better in this film, and Kevin G. Was right on par.
I'm giving this movie a slightly weighted 7/10 to boost it's average, as I don't find the current 6.3 stars accurate. Giving this movie a 1/10 - or ANY movie that rating, tbh - is just being dramatic and dishonest, and is treating the film unfairly. Anyway, that's what I know.

You heard me! My wife and I just got back from the theater, and absolutely LOVED this movie, even more than any of the Shrek movies and the first Puss in Boots!
This movie has SO MUCH to love, from BEAUTIFUL visuals/action to consistent humor that actually had us laughing to engaging characters, both old and new. Such a fun time, and so worth seeing in the theaters, though we'll definitely be picking up a copy once it's out on DVD!
Without giving too much away, there are several different antagonists in this movie that scratch all the bad-guy itches, covering the spectrum from totally hateable to horrifying to relatable and sympathetic. A great cast! Also, the magical world they came up with for this movie was awesome, with some really cool/unique features!
At first, we were a little worried about the dog character, neither of us being big fans of daffy sidekicks, but we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves rooting for him! He's hilarious, and that's coming from a cat-lover!
Several callbacks to the first Puss in Boots movie made this one feel less like a spin-off than a worthy standalone franchise, and the movie was PACKED with magical references that all ages will be able to recognize and enjoy.
Do yourself a favor and free a few hours for this one!! A rare 10 from me!!
