Overinflated balloon popped.
Why on earth don't they spend more time on the spot rather than spending more money on the movie? The end is so obvious from the beginning. Graceful tree-hugging Na'vis vs. greedy human-beings. So beyond LOTR or Matrix even though how much hi-tech is involved. What a waste of fiscal sources invested in! I respect the endeavor. But I didn't like it. It was the most emotional and educational video game I've ever seen. Promotion - Marketing - Trade. Mr. Cameron is richer than yesterday, since he taught us a good lesson? I was expecting a good plot, but all I got was strong visuals. It is not enough. At least, the film doesn't deserve the praises it got. When the praises were so overstated, my expectations got higher. Overinflated balloon popped. Characters imitated from Matrix or LOTR. Sully is so like Neo, rebellious, ignorant at first, then he crosses the good side and falls in love. An oracle who reads the marks. "Elf"ish kingdom; they respect the nature, they are noble and they are supernatural. Oh please. It's lacking the originality on every plane. Before the movie, there was a huge sequence of commercials. Some of them were about Wii games. I find them more original in terms of technology.
Karpuz Kabugundan Gemiler Yapmak (2004)
simple and spectacular
A very simple story with amateur casting can not impress me like this ever. It is about a passion of a two young people toward cinema, making their own projector with very primitive equipments. Their efforts are worth watching. Photography is perfect, every scene is a story itself, colored by the beautiful country side. Village and the villagers are so real that you get the impression as if you are watching a documentary about Turkish villages at the same time, showing the lifestyle, language, costumes, architecture, traditions, taboos and everything in a very lean way. A heartbreaking love story throws in a towel, very innocent but impossible because of the boundaries people set for their selves especially in Turkey. It makes you think how bright minds go in vein because of the lack of support or lack of facility. Fortunately imagination is all free. I am sure the filmmakers did not expect a box office, they put forth their hearts to display everything very sincerely and unreserved. Wish they can reach out the crowds.
Interview (2007)
Good movie
I think, the movie is all about revenge. A simple interview turns out to be a war of minds and egos. In the end, we know all the deepest secrets of the interviewer, and absolutely nothing about the star. Sienna Miller disguises herself very successfully and misleads Buscemi, making him reveal himself; lose his cocksure appearance and his fake credentials. Surprisingly she does all these with honesty and her honesty beats up the hypocrisy of the other. It makes you keep watching and does not let you lose track of the dialog's in spite of the one shot in one room. Good dialogs, good acting, good movie. Do not play the game with someone who can play better.
The Fountain (2006)
Bold but lame!
A trip from the most barbaric culture to the spiritual earth seeking the immortality for the sake of the same woman over the centuries. Movie has genuinely interesting idea, but never goes beyond the limits. Fate is always the winner and rebellion against it, is just the endeavors in vain. He struggles to save her life taking interesting journeys to learn the deepest aspects of the universe through self-mastery but I could never feel the touch of a super-fantastic love story. What was the motto? All the doors are closed, so just live it, do not push? There is no challenge respecting the story but very challenging in the way it is shot. Every scene is like a work of art reflecting the virtual travels. The director embarked upon a very hard-work in picturing a mind absorbed in meditation as he let us enter the minds of the characters in Requiem for a dream. Very good regarding the cinematography and the core elements but not supported by the followings in the end.
Zwartboek (2006)
tremendous!
This movie should be placed among the cults related to tragedy of Jewish people during the WWII like "Schindler's list", "Pianist" and "Life is beautiful". It presents the Dutch perspective from the angle of the Jews and the resistance fighters, also accompanied conflicts of interest between them from time to time. There is love, hate, revenge, betrayal, courage, fight, adventure, everything about war, but the most important thing is the scale of the events is not too large to grasp, and you can easily establish empathy with the woman character. Carice Von Houten is a beauty; I can never think a replacement for her. Highly recommend this movie. It will nail you down. The movie can be distinguished from the other black-white-grey war films by its colorful nature and very few scenes over humiliation of the Jews whereas the drama expressed by all means.
Factory Girl (2006)
Insignificant
Before seeing the movie, it is necessary to know about the Andy Warhol's art, at least to have a clue about the era in which Andy met Edie. Sienna Miller acts significantly. She asserts herself very sincerely reflecting Edie's crave for relating emotionally to Andy, the tragedy when he abandons her and also the fight over the pain remain hidden since her childhood. But we can never get the main reason why Andy made Edie a star. It is more likely that Andy uses her as a material then throws her like a piece of trash. Both characters should have met at a deeper emotional level. Guy Pierce gives the cocksure attitude disguising his fragility. In many respects the movie is disappointing even if you do not know much about the reality, you feel that some things very important are missing.
Zodiac (2007)
very successful
I went to the movie trusting wholeheartedly to David Fincher and back home very satisfied. In that rush of events, the chaotic and bureaucratic atmosphere, you never feel like losing the sight, can easily keep track of all the pursuits. The emotional and also rational orientation toward to the crimes and the killer is very well balanced and acted by the significant cast and crew that enable you to get a good perspective on your own, even though the end is already known. It is not only a detective movie, but also has interesting personal intersections, such as the one between an inflated ego Robert Downey Jr. and Jake G., an example for lack of confidence. Every detail from the music to the kitchen utensils is dealt with great attention and consistent with the time periods. There are a few very disturbing sequences which attract your attention and give the sense that you are watching a real story. Very successful!
