"Saint Amour" is a movie about a young Roman Catholic priest (Louis) who falls in love with a young woman he grew up with. This love makes him insecure about whether he wants to remain an unmarried priest. Wouldn't he rather marry the love of his life instead? Would God call it a capital sin if he abandons priesthood and marries the girl he is so much in love with? The church is outright unsupportive and seems to fail to recognize his struggle.
The movie does its best to show us that Louis is having great difficulty with making this choice. However, it fails to show us why this is so difficult. It seems that he is only inclined to stick to his priesthood because the church gives him a feeling of belonging. The church does not appear to be a means of serving a God that he loves.
The movie looks upon his life in retrospect, but the past is shown very much as if it is the present. This gives a good impression of the person he is, and the life that has made him this person.
