Gray Matter (2023)
Must watch and be pleasantly surprised
Do not go by the Project Greenlight information or rather misinformation. I watched this film because the storyline seemed intriguing and fresh, not just cookie cutter sci-fi which is what the critics all seem to promote. I went into this film with an open mind and I absolutely LOVED it! The actors that's played Ro and her mother weren't known to me yet I was instantly drawn into the movie by their strong and talented performances. I looked into why the movie wasn't longer and more complete or why I hadn't heard of it until today and it endeared the movie, its plot, it's direction, and the the performance of the two strong female leads. It appears that they were making this with and inadequate budget and little time. I would love to see this as a series or even as a trilogy movie concept. It has definite and strong assets (as long as they keep the actresses). I could even see this as an origin story for an x-men character such as Storm portrayed by Halle Berry; I loved it that much! Do yourself a favor and watch it and decide for yourself. It's a refreshing and interesting plot that had me hooked from the beginning!
Eat Pray Love (2010)
An opportunity very much missed!
I went into this with an open mind, which was difficult since many friends and family had expressed it was a flawed, disappointing, and biased western take on deeply respected cultural and religious topics. I'm not one to let others form my opinions so I gave it a watch for myself. It was very much a waste of my time. I don't fault the actors of this movie, they were probably given a poorly written and researched book and script. The "journey" was told by a privileged middle aged woman who finds herself unhappy with the materialistic and clique of a life she's built for herself. Since we see this affliction all around our country, I still had hopes for a movie that would shed some simple moral, ethical, and religious lessons for our watchers. Alas that is not the case. Without spoiling the details of the movie (which really wouldn't be such a loss), the writers and producers missed most of the beautifully rich and culturally deep lessons of the regions around the world that the main character journeys through. The movie was a waste of time because of the superficial story and the misrepresented stereotypical portrayal of three very rich cultures. It was a missed opportunity as it had actors (including Julia Roberts) that would have been capable of bringing talent and dimension to the portrayal of their characters, had the writing and producing not been such a disaster. Save yourself over two hours of precious life and skip this movie and the book.
Ghosts (2021)
Great show with good casting and writing
I found the British version just tolerable and the only reason I went back and watched some of it was because of all the comparisons. The "original" wasn't well cast, had corny storylines, and just lost my attention quickly. This "American" version as everyone calls it, is just great! The two main characters are refreshing in their portrayal of a real couple and the cast in general fits well together. They play off of each other and pull you into each episode's storyline as each character is well developed and quite unique. I have no idea why anyone would prefer the poorly evolved and stagnant British version? I so hope that they'd start producing more shows per season. Definitely an entertaining and fun watch and the actors that play Jay and Sam are a smashing success!
Jeff Dunham: Me the People (2022)
Disappointing
One of the best things about Mr. Dunham's comedy until now was that it brought people together. He was an equal opportunity comedian/critic. His jokes were written with the audience in mind....he gave us a laugh without being crass or too hateful. Unfortunately this latest "special" was just one sided, unimaginative, and full of pandering to the lowest denominator, at a time when our country is already struggling to hold itself and together. As a long time fan, I was disappointed with the quality of the material as well as his unabashed political agenda. We watch his type of comedy for a lighthearted laugh so as to be distracted from the everyday stresses of life. Why did you decide to change your show Mr. Dunham? Why further divide our country? You are privileged to have a platform and a voice that could have been used to unite your audience with lighthearted laughter as was your gift. It seems as if your attained wealth and privilege have cost you the talent I so admired in your shows. You had the ability to be an equal opportunity comedian with a light touch. I'm saddened to see and hear that you've taken your talent and turned it into a weapon to insult and further divide our country. It may not bother you that you've lost a long time fan but it saddens me deeply that you've buckled under the pressures of hate, money, and privilege at a time when your loyalest fans needed you the most.
Criminal Minds: Sicarius (2022)
Well written episode
I wasn't disappointed by the twists and turns of this episode. We found the team struggling to connect and do their jobs as the last episode ended and this picks up as the second hour. There's political shenanigans to dodge for the entire team as well as real life responsibilities and emotions to juggle. I was pleased that the writing and plot development were spot on as usual. It still felt like the CM family with a post covid twist. The acting was on par and pleasantly surprising as come back shows usually drop the ball but not our CM team! The new plot line is unique and scared the crud out of us as usual while drawing everyone in. We cannot wait to see what happens this season. How do the writers and actor keep it fresh? It's great!
Criminal Minds: Just Getting Started (2022)
Happy happy joy joy!
So happy the show is back even if it isn't the full cast. I cannot wait until the next episode becomes available. I really hope the network knows it's better than 99% of the things they're airing currently. It's been able to retain its old charisma and style with an even fresher take as it's timeline has stayed current. No spoilers but it brings back most of our favorite cast members that have to work in a post covid world. They're struggling to do the job while separated by distance and a more tech savvy serial killer or is it killers? We catch up with the team and how they weathered personal challenges and do their jobs in a post covid world and there's much sinister themes afoot!
