The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Can A Movie Be Too Scary?
The acting and other technical elements of The Conjuring 2 make it a well made film but most movie-goers just want to know if it really is that scary. I say it most definitely is. There is no edge of your seat excitement and there is nothing fun about it, it's just really scary. Some scenes were similar to the first movie but most of the time I forgot I was watching a sequel. All the characters seemed equally important and Vera Farmiga is very pretty but all of that gets overlooked due to how scary it is. It was a bit uncomfortable to watch and I wanted it to be over but I mean that as a compliment.
Some of my favorite horror movies are An American Werewolf In London, Phantasm, the original Halloween, the original Fright Night, and some films in the A Nightmare On Elm Street series. Those are classic scary movies that play each year on certain networks during the month of October and fall into that category of a worst case scenario. Imagine how scary it would be if your nightmares could get you in real life or if a vampire moved into the house next door to you. Those are movies you can watch at home with the lights out while snacking on popcorn and chugging a soda and having fun while being scared. The Conjuring 2 however is a seriously terrifying two hour commitment that I do not want to watch at home alone. What if that hideous demon in the movie comes to get me? There's no fun in that!
I remember seeing commercials for Paranormal Activity that showed the audience scared and looking away from the screen for a moment before peeking back and enjoying the experience like a sort of amusement ride. I like the films in that series. The Conjuring 2 had a different effect on the audience. The theater was silent throughout the entire film and after it ended people left the theater quickly and in silence. I got the feeling they were scared out of their wits.
Rather than repeating myself by saying it was really scary, I'll sum it up. This is not a horror movie you mix in with teen-screams, slashers, or monster movies. It goes with The Exorcist or The Shining, especially when they were first released. One that will have even the most seasoned horror fan checking their closets and under their beds before going to sleep. See it in the theater if you can and good luck!
Fear No Evil (1981)
Lots going for it!
I don't understand why this has such a low rating. If it's a matter of just not liking the film because you don't think it's scary or a good story then that simply is just a matter of opinion. Technically the film is very well made, in my opinion. The lighting stands out almost more than the soundtrack which is awesome. The director was just 24 years old when he made this, the simple special effects (those with shadows, camera tricks, strings, etc..) make you question how they actually pulled the trick off while other effects were rotoscoped. You know when artists trace over a live action scene frame by frame, cool stuff! Joel Coen was the assistant editor, scenes were shot on location at incredible settings. There are a lot of interesting facts about this movie. The film fits right in with other early 80's horror classics and any fan of the genre should not miss this one.
GhostWatcher (2002)
Garbage
Bad editing, no style, no acting... just terrible.
Was this made by a high school student? A bad high school student? This isn't bad in a good or ironic way, just bad as in you really don't need to waste your time with this.
I find it odd that any IMDb users gave this a rating of more than one star.
I watched this with two friends of mine and we all agreed on how crappy this movie is. We watched a bit of the special features, the gag reel. Also very bad! Not funny or amusing in any way. They were just takes of scenes they didn't use.
The story seemed like a good one, actually I read about this movie and really looked forward to watching it but what a mistake that was.
Werewolf: The Devil's Hound (2007)
Garbage
This is a straight to video release that should be sent straight to the trash. It's not even good in an ironic way. I must admit however, I only watched about 20 minutes of this "movie" then gave up. The quick choppy editing early on in the film was enough for me to make my decision. I watch a lot of movies and trust my opinion.
I skipped ahead a few chapters to see if anything of value happens, still the same garbage. I tried the audio commentary. It seems they were going for a bit of action, some comedy, an 80's feel and of course horror. The result is a far, far, distant cry from anything like American Werewolf in London, Silver Bullet, or Ginger Snaps.
Those horror and action films of the 80's that the creators of this flick were modeling weren't attempting to be classics, they just happened to be good movies that remain timeless.
Better luck next time creators of Werewolf: Devils Hound.
The Good Humor Man (2005)
A bit of a train wreck
I saw this on a screener DVD a couple months before it was released.
I liked the main characters and the overall story but some scenes are pretty sloppy and confusing. The sets were fitting but a few just looked like left overs from Freaks & Geeks or reminded me of a cell phone commercial shot in a middle class home. Definitely not what the DVD cover claims, "Destined to be the next stoner classic", hardly.
Wardrobe and hairstyles are done well and yes, there are some really pretty girls in this, always nice to see a good looking cast.
Almost every scene contained guitar that just droned on and on. Sound design was a bit poor. I think less would have been best.
