At a warehouse in Los Angeles, trucks are loaded with piles of tires to be shipped to a San Francisco warehouse. On a country road in the shadows of darkness, tires are transferred to Joe Wembley (Frank M. Thomas), an underworld magnate and operator of a beach nightclub. With $50,000 raised from the transaction, Evelyn Harris (Doris Lloyd), who inherited the tire business from her late husband, plans to marry Eddie Moore (Jerome Cowan), a singer at a Wembley cafe. The two lovebirds head for New York City, but Moore insists on stopping at an empty cabin that he notices from the street.
In San Francisco, private detective Jess Arno (William Gargan) manages to acquit actress Dolly Adair (Phyllis Brooks) of murder and becomes a media sensation. After the trial is over, Jess rushes to call her boyfriend, June Terry (Margaret Lindsay), a real estate agent on the beach. June, jealous of Dolly, is angry when Jess informs her that she plans to protect Dolly from the reporters by hiding her in her beach hut.

The film consists of a series of different people talking about how they have contributed to the war effort. These include a motor mechanic who now builds airplanes and is a member of the Volunteer Defense Force; an engineer from a cosmetics factory, who now runs a factory that contributes through taxes to the war effort; a farmer who saw the importance of growing food for the war effort and the contribution of women as members of the ground army; a former milkman who now builds roads and airports and his daughter Gwennie who works in an munitions factory; Gwennie's boyfriend, Bill, who served in the merchant navy; RAAF and RAF pilots in New Guinea prior to their mission; RAAF and RAF mechanics are concerned about pilot safety; also spoke to an American mechanic "Brooklyn" remembering the Darwin bombing; an Australian and American soldier cut off in the steamy jungles of New Guinea - with Australia recalling a service tour of Tobruk, Crete, Greece and the Malayan campaign; he praised British allies India and New Zealand; with the Australian talking about his brother being a prisoner of war in Malaya, with the American brother a prisoner of war in Bataan; and finally the narrator talks about Peter Lalor of the Eureka Rebellion and the promises made in the Eureka Stockade.
