A Man Called Otto (2022)
Heartwarming and touching
Just watched this. Wonderful, touching.
I won't cover the story line as its already covered plenty. But I will say this is one of the better films I have seen in quite a few years. Great acting by the entire cast - and Tom Hanks just performs his usual magic. We need more films like this, it covers the human spirit so well.
If you want to watch something that will tug at those heart strings and make you smile at the same time, this one is for you.
I'm trying to keep this short, but for the first time in my life, I am being told by a computer I can't post this review unless it has a minimum 600 characters. There we go, >600.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Didn't really float my boat
This film is okay. The flight sequences are great. However, the story is much of a rehash of the original and quite predictable. Maverick just did not have the same impact on me as the 86 original, even with the superior filming etc. But is it worth spending money on to watch? Yes. Just tame your expectations, you may enjoy it more.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
12 Oscar nominations tells you all you need to know about Cinema today
Good acting, but utter pretentious nonsense. For the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this film is right up their street. But for the overwhelming majority of Citizen Joes out there, this film will be a tedious and unfulfilling watch. 12 Oscar nominations? I know we hit a dry patch in the movie industry with COVID, but come on? 12??
No Time to Die (2021)
Not bad, not good
Some people rating this as 1 or 2 outta 10 is plain rediculuous. A film has to be really bad for those scores, No Time To Die is not awful. But it could have been so much better. There are lengthy scenes and complete locations and characters that really didn't fit ar all. Those should have been removed completey in my opinion. TMany action scenes wern't required. Even for a Bond film, those scenes weren't remotely believable. The scenes almost seemed like add-ons to keep action fans happy, but all they did was lengthen the film without adding any Wow factor.
I'd give this a 6.5/10. It was okay, but certainly not the best Bond film though. It's defintely worth watching. Just remember, the good guys can fire hundreds of rounds an kill with every shot. Baddies will fire thousands and not hit a single good guy/
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
Cheesey in the extreme
It is films like this that have downgraded Hollywood's status as the once premier film institution. Even if you leave your brain at home, watching this is impossible without feeling embarrassed at the utter garbage coming out of Hollywood at times. It is a cringeworthy film at every level. If it weren't for the violent action scenes, I'd say this would be fit for no one older than 8!
Promising Young Woman (2020)
A difficult watch with an unprecticted ending
This film runs along similar lines to The Accused (1988). If you liked that, you will likely enjoy this. I thought it was good, but the last 30 minutes I found quite unsettling. I didn't think the story would head in that direction. I was hoping for a more subtle, pleasing end. But it is because of the very strange & wholly unexpected, unpredictable ending that my rating for this went from 6 to 8.
Carrey Mulligan's performance was super good. As an English actress, she played the American female role with great conviction. This is the first film I have seen her in. Instant crush! And she played the part so well. Her Oscar nomination for this is well deserved.
Great film. But, it definitely affected me and is still playing on my mind.
The Father (2020)
Wasn't expecting that. And I liked it - a whole lot!
No Oscar is worthy of Anthony Hopkins performance here. One of the World's best actors of all time just raised the bar to a height that I can't see being bettered anytime soon. Olivia Colman's performance is utterly superb. This is not the type of film I would watch. My wife suggested we give it a try. At the end, we were both speechless and in awe of the best film we have seen in many, many years. I felt is if I was living in the story, as if I were there, in his shoes, in their shoes. I highly recommend this film. The story may not be for everyone, but the acting by Hopkins & Colman is as convincing and real as it can ever get.
Antebellum (2020)
Unusual but good
This is certainly an unusual story. For 60% of it, it is not what it seems. A good 6.5/10. Good cinematography, solid acting. If you enjoyed "Get Out", you might like this. Ignore the negative reviews, this was great entertainment and well worth the watch.
Wheels (2014)
As good as the rating suggests. A definite must watch.
The review from taniqeb "A film not to walk away from" is about a good a review as you will get. Accurate and honest. So I won't add more, other than to say this is a great film that really hits the spot, a film I will won't forget. Ignore the negative reviews here, this is an excellent film from start to finish.
American Woman (2018)
Great film, Sienna Miller is outstanding
I would rate this 8.0/10. An excellent film that had me engaged from start to finish. Sienna Miller played her character to perfection. Her best performance so far, hands down. Some may find this film lacks any real momentum or story. On the contrary, it is packed full of it. Utterly compelling & believable, you feel as if you are living and breathing every scene. Few films have had this effect on me.
Then Came You (2020)
A great 2020 Tonic
I really enjoyed this. I'd rate it 6.8. I thought the acting was great, the scenery splendid. A simple but sweet story well worth watching. I just don't get the negative reviews. If you're a dopey romantic, you should enjoy this.
Rise of the Footsoldier 4: Marbella (2019)
Why do Brits think non-stop swearing makes them tough?
Yet another Brit action film where every second word is an expletive. It is boring, old and tired. It doesn't make the character look tough, just foul mouthed. It's lazy and long had its day. As for the film, if you turn the sound off and watch, it's worth 4 stars. Volume on, 2 stars.
Cop Land (1997)
Stallone, was that you?
I like Stallone. I like his films., they're just darn good fun. June 2020 is the first time I have seen Cop Land and I was blown away by Stallone's performance. By far his best IMHO. Increased respect for the man. And the movie is great too.
El hoyo (2019)
A good idea that ran out of steam fast
The premise is good, but the story rapidly declines into repetitive nothingness. The ending is not just an anti-climax, the ending is just nothing, leaving the viewer wondering what they had just watched. The scenes are also very dark, so only watch this if you are in a completely dark room. Otherwise, you see nothing.
Gordon, Gino & Fred's Road Trip (2018)
Heaps of fun
The chemistry among these 3 amigos is palpable. Great fun, huge laughs, really enjoying this series.
The Shack (2017)
Abeautiful and quite relevant film
Wow. I was about 25 minutes into this film and kinda thought it was just a film I'd watch and quickly forget. This film was just beautiful in every way. I am so, so glad I stuck with it. The story and moral of is profound. I am NOT a practicing religious person at all. You don't need to be to be completely taken aback by the messages here. It has opened my eyes. I encourage you to watch this. Entertaining, beautiful cinematography, superb acting. I am so tempted to give this a solid 9. Perhaps I may come back and do just that.
7-beon-bang-ui seon-mul (2013)
When a 55 year old man sheds tears
I can't remember a film ever having this effect on me.And it had to be a Korean one at that. Full of humor, love, compassion and immense sadness. A most beautiful film in every way. Kal So Won was superb, no child actor could have played the part better. Ryu Seung-Ryong,and the rest, all unknown actors to me, they really shone.
I won't give the story away, but I will say this. WATCH IT!! Watch IT! I don't care how tough a guy you are, if you don't have tears streaming down your cheeks at the end, then you are immune to sadness. Simply brilliant film, far better than the Hollywood stuff of today.
Searching for Sugar Man (2012)
A touching tribute to a humble man.
Humble. That is best way one can describe Rodriguez. I grew up in South Africa listening to his music, so to see what actually happened to the Rodriguez that no one knew a single thing about was quite a fulfilling experience. A remarkable film, even if you are not into music. I am so glad he has such a loving family around him. The man comes through in this film as such an inspiration. He was a master in his class who, by some cruel fate, never achieved the recognition he absolutely deserved until...........
Brightburn (2019)
Complete waste of time
I was tempted to change channels 30 minutes into this film. I should have gone with my hunch. Poor acting, terrible story, script, props .... everything. No redeeming qualities here at all.
Magnum P.I. (2018)
Just bad
It's not just because this isa remake of a popular classic that I have given this show 3 stars, it is just that it's....bad. I watched a couple of shows and found none of the characters interesting, the script and plots are poor. The original Magnum is now very dated, but in its time, it was highly popular. I am certain the same cannot be said for this rework.
The Two Popes (2019)
Brilliant, even if you are not religious
I am not aligned with any particular religion, but my Colombian wife is deeply Catholic. It was only for this reason I watched this. Watching a film about one Pope would be a tough few hours I thought. Watching two would be utterly painful. I was certain of that.
I absolutely loved this film. The acting by Hopkins & Pryce was simply superb, off the charts believable. Considering just the two of them acted out a good >90% of this proves how engaging the story is too. The Oscars are up tomorrow night. It seems probable neither Hopkins or Pryce will be recipients. But having watched all the films of the other Oscar nominated performers, these two deserve both offerings, hands down. No contest.
Extraterrestrial (2014)
This was good fun
I don't believe this film should have its current scoring of 5.0. I reckon this is a solid 6.5. Starts off a little slow as it builds the story, but then jumps into top gear very quickly. The effects are pretty good, acting is decent, story lline has been played many times but here, the ending is not what I expected - super good and different. If you want a fun movie to watch with a bag of popcorn and your better half with you, I do recommend this.
Medena zemja (2019)
Beautiful, Real, Humbling
Other reviewers have done well to describe just how beautiful, yet poignant this Docufilm is. I won't ruin it by trying to add anymore. I will only say that, at the end, I felt like a fake, a fraud. How mankind has lost itself is eloquently portrayed here. Hatidze Muratova is an inspiration beyond words.
The Foreigner (2017)
Great film, not predictable
Firstly, I never thought I would see Jackie Chan take on this type of character, or film. He was brilliant. In fact, the film was well cast, and Brosnan was superb.
If you haven't seen this film yet, it is a good investment of a couple of hours.. I thought this film would be predictable. Far from it. At the end, all I could say was WOW! Great film, great cast, great acting, great everything.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (2015)
Holy Mary
Good Lord, what was that? I rate 3 stars and that is being generous.
