The Bernie Mac Show (2001– )
Original and entertaining.
6 February 2002
Some people may not know this but Bernie Mac had a short-lived variety show on HBO called "Midnight Mac". It was then that Bernie Mac's comedy and host skills were displayed together. Why HBO got rid of the show is anyone's guess but I'm happy he has his own show now.

"The Bernie Mac Show" doesn't follow any of the conventional sitcom "rules". The male character (Bernie Mac) is strong, smooth, intelligent, and doesn't take any BS from anyone. Instead of the rash of wishy-washy and flat-out stupid "fathers" on recent sitcoms, The Bernie Mac Show is like a hip "Father Knows Best". The fresh cast is wonderful. The children are hilarious and Bernie's wife (Kellita Smith) is SOOOO REAL.

I hope this show stays on. So original, fresh, and entertaining!

The story + the action + the effects = Good sequel!
15 October 2001
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the movie on DVD (couldn't catch it at the cinema). The beginning scenes featuring The Scorpion King (a new movie coming out in 2002) did a nice job of showing that this guy could be worse than The Mummy. I feel that The Mummy Returns excels in showing the connection between the current characters and their Egyptian counterparts. I frankly don't understand the criticism of saying their was NO STORY or the STORY WAS BAD. Where? The story is simple and easy to understand. Does that constitute as BAD. No it does not. The action, well that's an understatement. There's enough quality action to satisfy the hungriest fans. I found no bad performances in this movie (well the little boy could be a little irritating but what little boys aren't). Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Arnold Vosloo stand out. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lock-Nah) looked like a throwback to the old Spartacas (sp?) type movie characters. Just a quality follow-up to a great movie. I hope "The Scorpion King" lives up to "The Mummies". Can't do wrong buying the DVD.

There is WAY TO MUCH over-analyzation in the bad comments about this movie. This isn't "The Godfather".

Just pure entertainment...
25 July 2001
As an avid sci-fi and fantasy ready along with being a veteran D&D player, my initial reaction was to analyze this movie with a fine-tooth comb when I went to see it in the theaters. After I saw the movie, I immediately wanted the DVD. Why? Because it's just pure entertainment!

That is not a bad thing! Movies are supposed to entertain. I found myself laughing at funny scenes and loving the action sequences. There are some solid D&D references in the movie also. Jeremy Irons was good. He didn't OVERACT. He played the character! Marlon Wayans was a good thief (about this issue of his supposed "buffoonery" and black stereotypes... WHATEVER! As a African-American, I find that nit-picking every role that a black person does is TIRED, POINTLESS, and a HORIZONTAL issue. LEAVE IT ALONE!). Sci-fi effects were good (could have been better). Overall this is a good movie, especially if you have children (which I do).

YES, I would've like to see the gritty, misty D&D atmosphere. YES, it could've been darker, bloodier, more violent (as in the real experience). YES, I wanted accurate D&D rules. But this film was made to appeal to a wide audience. And in that regard, it was a good film. I think all D&D lovers need to remember that when watching this movie. If I can do it, you can too!

Overall, 7 out of 10!

A true sci-fi movie: Real and moving!
16 October 2000
Warning: Spoilers
You would think that we were reviewing "Attack of the Space Pimps" by most of the comments written about this movie. As an avid sci-fi reader and movie watcher, I was impressed by the reality and moving aspect of this film. "Mission To Mars" is a very good sci-fi movie.

The acting is well done and REAL. These are astronauts. Trained professionals that have to deal with extraordinary situations or die a terrible death. The relationship between the astronauts is portrayed in a REAL manner (even down to Robbins selfless sacrifice). All of this moved me greatly. The awesome moment when the first crew finds the face on Mars and unwittingly activates its "defense system" (and they just stand there in complete awe), is REAL. The life-altering moments inside the Mars face, is REAL. REAL reactions to extraordinary situations is what MADE "Mission To Mars".

What were you expecting? A slimy creature that absorbs the astronauts lifeforce? A testesterone-laced ending like "Armageddon" (drilling through unknown metal with Earth-made drills and Bruce Willis' gruff determination)? A Will Smith cool line ending such as in "Independence Day"?

"Mission To Mars" is awe-inspiring to say the least!

Just a fine film...
6 April 2000
Bopha! is just a fine film with stellar acting. Once again Danny Glover delivers a great performance the worthy of Oscar or Golden Globe and he just doesn't get it. The struggle of one man's fight to be true to his native land or to the ruling establishment is poignantly portrayed. Alfre Woodard and Malcolm McDowell turn in good performances also.

A victim of the cynical and politically correct 90s...
9 October 1999
I went to this movie to watch one of my all-time favorite movie series: Star Wars. I watched, was entertained, and left. Phantom Menace did an excellent job of setting the beginning of the Star Wars story. The acting fit the movie (no bad performances) and the special effects and action superb.

No we get to the serious matter. For people to call the character Jar-Jar Binks a "racist" character is INCREDIBLY STUPID! I am an African-American that is active in the NAACP. I laughed when I saw Jar-Jar. He was funny (and a little irritating). The young man who played as Jar-Jar (an African-American) said that the character has alot of him in it. His only frame of reference was his African-American upbringing. Jar-Jar is not even close to the stereotypes in early movies depicting blacks and stupid, lazy, and slow-witted.

I find it funny that people just overlook what Jar-Jar and his people did: Fight a battle against an enormous army of robots in defense of their way of life. A slow-witted, lazy, and stupid people INDEED! Fine if you thought the movie was dull or lacked character development. BUT, to go with "Jar-Jar is racist" theme is ignorant, stupid, and DOWNRIGHT ABSURD!

Just flat out bad...
25 January 1999
I enjoyed The Substitute. Decent acting and enough acting. Not great, but decent enough. But the follow-up makes me wonder how? what? who? uh??

The film was empty, along with Treat Williams empty performance. The plot just didn't work out. The movie just didn't....WORK! Just flat out bad!

12 Monkeys (1995)
2nd time's a CHARM!
25 January 1999
When I first watched this movie, I had some difficulty following it, BUT I still enjoyed it. But when I watched it a second time and fully absorbed it, I was speechless. One of the most original films in modern sci-fi. When you fully realize the scope of this movie, you just keep thinking about. A definite MUST SEE!

Clockers (1995)
This movie has it all... Represent Spike!
25 January 1999
Although I feel "Mo Better Blues" was Spike Lee's best movie, "Clockers" comes in at a close second. This movie has it all: great acting, good plot, good atmosphere, and great soundtrack. If you're a crime drama fan, Clockers will definitely keep ya hooked.

Belly (1998)
Whatever man....
4 December 1998
After watching Master P's futility in "I Got The Hook Up", I was not surprised by the bad acting and utter NONSENSE of "Belly". This whole "make a rap music video into a movie" HAS TO END. African-American actors were talking like ITALIAN MOBSTERS in this movie. And rapper DMX: You're worse than Master P as an actor. The rampant materialism, ultra-unreal plot passed off as "keepin' it real", and just the nonsense of it all makes a man like me say: WHATEVER MAN!

Spike Lee, ya got this one right!
4 December 1998
One of Spike Lee's best, "Mo Better Blues" captures the atmosphere of jazz. The soundtrack flows with the acting like a song. Denzel Washington does a great job of portraying a jazzman's quest for perfection, while living in a "real world" full of problems. Being a musician myself, I appreciated the struggle Washington's character was going through. All of Spike Lee's trademark camera angles (which I've disliked in some of his movies) worked to perfection in this movie. Great music, good acting, and a solid plot. Recommend!

Action and then some...
3 December 1998
As a lover of action movies, my appetite was more than satisfied. Blade delivers some awesome martial arts work and gunplay to keep action lovers like me entranced. I am also an AVID vampire fan. I would have liked the vampires to be a little more nasty but all in all, they represented well. The special effects were great and the storyline was solid. Blade and Spawn should team up for an action movie. The almost undead and the dead. I'll go see that! This movie is a great rental.

Top 1% worst movies ever made!!
2 December 1998
A pointless plot and bad acting characterize this film that needs to be thrown in the garbage. Master P isn't master of anything except stupidity in this movie. This movies features some of my favorite comics but they come off looking aimless in this film. Word to the would-be watchers of this movie: Ghetto fabulous + hip-hop non-culture + bad acting + pointless plot = A film that ain't.
