Fine acting from Crowe, but the old man makeup made him look like Jason Robards. Connelly's character was tritely written. I wish I understood the significance of Charles being British, and why the little girl was there at all. Ed Harris looked ridiculous in his hat. The only nasty moment in the whole film was when the baby almost drowns in the bathtub. The rest of it was good, and fairly convincing.
7/10 ... the story has been sugared up to appeal to the most undemanding palate, but the whole thing is too "processed" for my taste.

If it had been trimmed to about an hour (by removing some of the jazz) this film would have been very enjoyable. As it was, the natural, but dry, social humour of Woody Allen is annoyingly punctuated by long excerpts from indifferent performances. The best bit comes right at the end, back in New York after the gruelling whistle-stop tour of Europe, where there is some tickling repartee and friendly needling between him and his folks (who look about a billion years old). Only for die-hard Allen fans, who need a peek at the "real" person behind those heavy specs.
The only aspects of this film which raise it from the unwatchable are the occasional scenes with unusual lighting, the half decent performances by most characters except the lead, and a few quite realistic bloody hearts. Switch to fast-forward, and forget the dialogue.
