THE ORIGINAL WAS JUST OK; THIS ONE IS REALLY BAD
The orginal SMILE copy the idea of IT FOLLOWS and was able do so something reasonable scarrier.
This one; is basically a music video; the prepartion of show, the dramatic situation of a former drug addict to come back (and her manager mother); and almost no existent story about some demon (that is the part never really clear).
Young girls must be interested in the concert prepareness with some musical numbers training but if you look for a horror movie; look elsewhere.
Nothing is really clear and it seems director and editors did whatever they seem as mad and unclear at possible in order to hide their lacks of ideas (basically where the movie was going).
There are some very violent and gory scenes; but not enough to make the movie terrifying at all; just disgusting
As in the previous one; the demon wins but after so meny changes in whatever was happening you only want to end so I vouch for the Demon ;as many people in the theater.
In brief; do not lose you time.
The Substance (2024)
A deserved Oscar for Demi Moore in al almost perfect masterpiece
There is only one small problem in this movie. Some scenes are very long so the movie lasts about two hous and 20 minutes.
Other than that is never boring and things get more and more stranger and with some unexpected twists that are more satiric than terryfing. Well I am sure the director loves David Cronember and this is a really homage to his strange and satiric humor.
An old actress, Demi Moore showing the really can act; is suffering for "OLD AGE" and also losing her show on a TV channel pushed out by a very repelent Dennis Quaid; in the most strange, gross and unsympathetic character he ever made (tet's be franc; he is really very good).
In her depression Demy accepts a treatment call the substance where her body will duplicated, younger and enhaced Margaret Qualley who is also very very good).
Qualley is not a clone; only one can be active one week at a time and they have to tranfers things between them.
But the tempation of being young and successfull makes both of them make horrible mistakes; with terrible consequences.
The movie is basically a well made drama on the beginning but eventually becomes something more terrifying and end in an strangely. Sad/funny way.
In brief; see it; is really worth your time; particuarly if you are a female.
Shoshana (2023)
ISRAEL ORIGINS JEWISH WERE THE BOMBERS AND TERRORISTS
I heard a lot of things about the Israel creation; but never suspected that in the previous years; where the Jewish who put bombs and kill lots of people in the name of freedom.
This a British movie from a very well know director and it does not seems be produced by Arabs; so I assume the information is mostly real but I am pretty Jewish people will feel offended being they shown as the real terrorists.
In any case; it is worth seeing it. Very violent sometimes but mostly Shoshana story. A freedom idealist that ends up fighting to get read of the British.
The story is never boring and the acting is reallly good.
Borderlands (2024)
NOT GREAT BUT A LOT OF FUN
Let's be realistic a move with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt and Jack Black could not be bad and absoultely not boring.
The movie is based on a video game; so you cannot expect a lot in terms of script; but those high quality enterainers actos; they can save everything and they do it.
There are lots of very violent (but not too bloody) action scenes; a few monsters and a very bad guy played by. Edgar Ramírez; who does what he can to compite with the previous five.
Basically is not Oscar worthy but very entretaining and I saw it whith my wife and daughter and both love it.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
An outstanding absolute reset (and mix-up) of Marvel universe
Let's be clear. If you are expecting another superheroes (recycled) story as happens lately in Marvel; you will be disappointing. But you are willing to laugh and really have fun on the messy Marvel inventions; like timelines and time guardians and multiverse prepare for the time of your life.
Some comments said the story is absurd; yes it is; as most of Marve MORE SERIOUS stuff; the good thing about this one is that it make everything big fun.
Of course having Hugh Jackman / Wolverine requieres some serios moments; are not that much and are very well and seriusly performed. The rest is one joke after the other and many many unexpected cameos that are also part of the joke.
Mixing Avengers; the Fantastic Four and X-MEN did not look easy but Ryan Reynols and the rest of scripting team did and excellent job mixing lots of elements and characters.
In brief; enjoy it for two hours you will not regret it.
Longlegs (2024)
ABSOLUTE CRAP
There is nothing in this movie worth losing time with it. The trailer was more suspenful and trapping than the movie itself.
Is not about a psycho killer but more about "sell my soul to the Devil". Nicolas Cage face is barely seen (mostly his voice); but in any way is not Oscar worthy.
The main actress (Maika Monroe) which was usually good in other movies; is absolutely inexpressive and frankly boring to watch; in fact the whole movie is absolutely boring.
I still do not understand why divide it in chapters; when the action is basically not changed.
The writter / director has no idea about pace; or even keep things interesting. The absurd end; does not help either.
The Fall Guy (2024)
Too long, not good action and not very funny
What an I tell you. David Leitch has made lot of good action / violences movies (like Bullet Train, John Wick, Deadpool 2 and Athomic Blonde) but is totally un-inspired in this one. Even the actions scenes are just basic and not spectaculars at all.
Ryan is as always very simpathetic as Emily Blunt but they characters are really no well developed. Only very long dialogs that make the movie two slow for its own good.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hannah Waddingham the only really good and convincing characters and both give a very good perfomance (obviously as the bad guys).
The movie is over two hours; but 30 minutes less and some better jokes should had help it a lot.
In brief; aside for a few beautifull faces and some not that good action scenes there is nothing interesting to see. If you want something spectacular; look for some Jackie Chan Hong Kong movies that are far more better, more funny comedies and a lot shorter.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
WHO GIVE 9 OR 10 NEVER SAW THE ORIGINAL
DUNE (1994 version) was directed by David Lynch and highly critized because of the voice in off; mostly by Virginia Madsen. But Lynch made the whole book in less than two and a half hours (there an extended version but not signed for him) incredible visual effects and outstanding WORMS.
:yinch took out a lot of unneccesary parts from the book and the movie was very easy to follow and entertaining.
This one; basically the same movie but in almost 6 hours and the WORMS are not even close to the original one. Denis Villeneuve kept almost everything from the book and the movie bacame too long, tedious for moments and not that easy to follow' this is basically the extended Lynch never approved.
Not suprising because all of his movies overstayed its welcome and he paid attention to details that are far from entertining.
One good thing is Javier Barden doing what he can to believe and save the movie. The rest of the cast; look tired not that not entertained. Suprising because many of them are really good actors in other movies.
The other good thing is that it looks like there will be DUNE THIRD PART which was only made in cheap serial and perhpas is most interesting; but I really doubt it will be short as the series
In bief; save time and see the original.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024)
I cannot understand what it really is; but is very funny
Ethan Coen never had big budget productions but his movies were usually good and originals.
He used to make serious comedies with lot of characters, mostly top rated actors and situations; some of them a little too long but never bad.
This time he makes very low budget thing; with not "A" class actresses (well Mat Damon and Pedro Pascal are there mostly as cameos ).
There are lots of essoteric sixties style images that do not make any sense and a very very simple (and increible absurd ) tale of two lesbian girls with bag full of ... (you will never expect what is inside) and a box with a human head.
In any case; the abusirdity lasts less that 90 minutes; and has some funny dialogs (not exhilarants but entertaining).
In brief; you will not be bored.
Argylle (2024)
Not funny not action not well acted not anything
I am pretty sure the title is very clear.
I usually like Matthew Vaughn movies; but this mess produce by APPLE is a complete disaster.
Basicaly the only two actors that did what they can are Bryan Cranston (doing what he can) and. John Cena (in very very brief part; but at least is funny).
The rest are basically there and nothing else.
Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell do not even look confortable in an incredible stupid and unfunny script so they did not even try to do something.
Apple productions values are far from a big budget movie; so lots of cameos; one decent action scene and lots of unbelivable dumb fights to fill up the screen time
Piece of advice AVOID IT.
Napoleon (2023)
THE WORST MOVIE OF THE DECADE DESERVES ALL RAZZIES PRIZES AND MORE
The RAZZIES Awards have a favorite:
Napoleon as worst movie and Ridley Scott as worst director; for sure.
Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby; deserves at least a nomination.
Napoleon was perhaps the only French that made things difficult to England; expecting British director do something respectfull would be a dream; but thjis time not even the real history was respected.
Tha main characters fought 61 battles and very few are shown; events are not even in order and many main characters are absent or shown without explanation. Suddenly is fired and suddenly comes back but never is clear.
So how it gets to almost three hours; basically shown his personal romantic problems; it show him as really bad lover; but his wife ends loving him even after cheating on him ? Kirby is NEVER HAPPY OR SMILING with him; but suddenly is in love ?
There many more stupid and badly created situations that could take too long to explain.
JUST FORGET THIS PIECE OF CRAP.
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Not good even for kids
I cannot remember the name but I saw a very similar movie about a year or two ago. That one was terryfiying but not too much; however compared with this a masterpiece.
The story does not make a lot of sense and twists are too predictable; in fact being a PG 13 leaves most of the blood and language out.
The horror is very basic and some moments really absurd; so do not expect to be scared; in fact sometimes is too tender for its own good.
The actors do what they can and do not it bad; but evem for them some dialogs and scenes are too dumb to be taken serioustly.
The special effects are fine but are not that used so do not expect much.
Freelance (2023)
Incredible well written comedy with incredible realistic and very hard political dialogs!!!
Lets be clear; this a relatively low budget action movie so do not expect spectacular actions scenes. There is lot of violence and action but is mostly comedy.
The incredible situation are the dialogs; unbelievable realistic; playing with the standard common places in this kind of movies and twisting them to unexpected outcomes. And the very hard critic to corporations exploiting third world countries for they resources.
Another surprise is that all the characters have a well defined roles, There no "dumb" characters and perhaps the most naive is the John Cena character.
The acting of everyone is really good; including Cena (incredible humble here) and Juan Pablo Raba being the most interesting (and surpurising in a very good way).
Alison Brierie is very good particularly in the sensual moments.
Yes, it is a comedy but a very serious one.
Sadly the action colud have been better; but this is a REAL GOOD MOVIE that deserves audience and it will not disappoint.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
An absoute piece of crap
It is obvious that most of the reviewers never read the original and not even saw Coppola Dracula (perhaps the most close to the book).
The Demeter is a very small part of the book; just a few lines never a great or even important part of the history.
Second; there are lots of crucifixes but Dracula ignores them; like had no effect against him
Third; Dracula looked like a person; in fact a very sensous one. Here is basically a monster from that NOSFERATU movie that NEVER GOT THE RIGHTS to use the character.
Nothing against women; but the only one here shoots better than males and even fight more; there was a #MEETOO# in the 19 century ?
Vampires need to be buried (in his own land; thus the reason of the boxes full of dirt) to convert; and the do not burn immediately until the really feed (that is not even in the book). In fact the ones here never drink, not even kill anybody
On top of all that; as always characters does the most stupid things and are killed in order of importance. But as nobody is very defined almost nobody cares.
Corey Hawkins is very good actor and he does his part very well; but his part is basically VAN HELSING with the name changed
Liam Cunningham is good as always; as is Woody Norman that creates the only terrifying part of the move
Taking liberties with a clastic is one thing; but basically changing the mythology ignoring most things is basically chaotic. This is what these people had done.
In brief ; terrible made adaptation, far from horror and not even Dracula is right. Do not lose your time.
Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
TWO HOURS OF FUN. Do you need more ?
THE MEG 2 is lot more comedy than the first one; which does not mean is soft. There is heavy violence everywhere very impressive stunts and the MEGs itself are very terrifying.
The main difference; the first was more dramatic with some important characters dying. In this one; only the bad one (and some very secondary ones died).
In any case, the movie does the best avoid unnecessary dramatism; which does not mean lacks entertainment.
The movie starts a little slow but the tension and action increase very soon. The last act is spectacular with the action divided among the different characters.
In brief; perhaps not as good as the original for some people but a lot of fun.
Oppenheimer (2023)
GOOD BUT ...
Christopher Nolan is an ambitious director who is always trying to impact and surprise. He is able to do it sometimes BUT NOT ALWAYS. TENET his previous movie was too difficult to follow for many people and not that satisfying at the end.
OPENHAIMER is basically the same. The first hour or so is about a very particular (far from humble, almost mad) person who suddenly become incredible recognized to the point of being the chief of the Manhattan Project. Cillian Murphy is excellent but is never clear how a semi communist, semi womanizer suddenly became so recognized.
Then another hour is about the project itself and discussions with a fellow scientists until the the bomb is made; even without much knowledge is basically the most appealing part; but his wife crisis (she is an alcoholic who despises his children) shown and strangely resolved. Also; how a person the created such thing could become so pacifists and worried about humanity.
It is something logic but the movie changes the characters without any kind of progression or moral dilema.
The third part of the movie; a very complicated political situation were Truman (play by Gary Oldman who also did Churchill) is depicted not as a nice or grateful person and lots of other politicians are shown even works (outstanding Robert Downey Jr. Who started a naïve person to become the worst of all enemies); but is resolved by Rami Malek (in his only real scene ) in from of the Congress.
Suddenly Oppenheimer about to be CRUCIFIED and the next scene shows him receiving a medal from the President
The point is the movie three hours long has big continuity issues. Most of us know, history and understand what happened but will young people really be clear ?
In brief; is not bad but is unnecessary long in empty parts and to too short in many important aspects.
Fast X (2023)
Absolute piece of crap that not even ends!!!
Original Fast and the Furious was copy of Point Break (a not very successful masterpiece that later become a cult classic) exchanging surf boards by cars. It worked and guarantee a sequel but Diesel was not interested so it was replaced by Tyrese Gibson. The movie was highly successful but produces decide to do a cheap one in Tokyo; that end up with a Diesel cameo granting the fourth installment.
The fourth part had the original protagonists and made some money; so after a while Diesel become one of the producers and with the higher budget and few spectacular scenes became an absolute blockbuster.
That luck lasted for the next four movies; keeping mostly the same cast (minus some dead that came back to life) and strongly villains and spectacular almost realistic scenes.
Weil it is not the case here. The only good thing is Momoa doing the bad guy and having fun; and John Cena doing some kind of sympathetic monster.
The rest of the cast; as good as usually is; has very little to do; and has little interaction with Diesel.
Diesel itself is a complete disaster. He barely act and is basically Superman; it was a thief originally but now became a generous loving person who only cares about his family and friends.
Louis Leterrier and usually good action movie director used to lower budget movies; does not seems confortable with this one.
The special effects are very poor; that last sequences is really lame and very cheap made and the movie is overload with fight sequences and very little cars ones. In fact the most spectaculars are the ones showed from FF 5 a few times during this movie.
To make matters worse; the script is absurd; overly long (141 minutes) and the movie has no ending; leaving open for X2 or XI
In brief; do not lose your time; is obviously the intention was to squeeze the franchise make some extra bucks but at least should have try to keep the level of the previous movies.
Beau Is Afraid (2023)
An absolute piece of crap
Joaquin Phoenix was the main reason I saw this movie and even himself; a great actor, seems mostly lost in a one dimensional unexpressive role.
I was never a fan of Ari Aster; HEREDITARY and MIDSOMMER were too long and boring and the "horror" was very little an nothing really that original.
What he was trying to do here? Everything Everywhere All at Once was a great complex movie; with difficult but precise logic that gives a very refreshing and welcomed message about families; particularly mothers; and when very deserved OSCARs trophies.
Stanley Kubrick EYES WIDE SHUT; did something similar several years ago.
In this case; nothing really makes a lot of sense. It is like short stories without a proper ending; the terrifying neighborhood, the PSHYCO killer, the overprotective family, the theater play in the woods and the return to mother's home. All start terrifying but never end in any kind of logic; even worse the inexplicable end.
There are lots of rhetoric and frankly boring long moments that if the sound is not good you are going miss a lot (in any case nothing really that interesting); never an explanation of the ridiculous penis shaped monster; the imprisoned twins or the amphitheater statement completely different from what we had seen before.
In brief; it last three hours (it was supposed to last four an perhaps some things could have been properly defined) but you could do a lot of things better; like seen EVERYTHING EVERWHER ALL AT ONCE that is really a FAR BETTER MOVIE and less pretentious.
Sisu (2022)
Extremely violent and gory dark comedy
SISU the imposible to translate Finnish word is about an old man in 1944 that tired of war decided to look for gold; find it and in his way back is intercepted but a group of defeated Nazis retreating; and decided to keep the gold from themselves.
They will not them and lots of bloody and extremely violent situations will occur.
If you seen the absurdities and comedy comedy moments of Indiana Jones and are not bothered by flying limbs, heads and lots and lots of blood; this is the movie for you.
If you are looking for a serios war movie; forget it; this not at all.
In brief; not for everybody but lots of fun.
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023)
ENTERTAINING AND FUNNY ACTION MOVIE BUT NOT RITCHIE'S BEST
Guy Ritchie is a director always trying to do something different but keep somehow his style. But this time; I am not very clear what he was trying to do.
Luckily this not the impossible understand REVOVER (also with Statham); is more a comedy (a black one ) like THE GENTELMEN; but there are comedy moments with Hugh Grant (outstanding), Cary Elwes (doing a great British accent ) or Josh Harnet (he did what he could but not that much); but Aubrey Plaza is in (she is an excellent actress and comedian) in a more serious rol; barely letting her show some humor.
Jason Statham is good as always in action scenes (which are not really spectacular but work) and some funny jokes. There is Busgy Malone there but I was never clear what was his real rol or why he was really doing; in fact most of the movie he did not even talk.
In brief; entertaining just to spend a funny couple of hours.
Cocaine Bear (2023)
Unexpected incredible funny movie that do not insult intelligence
The story is very simple; a cocaine shipment falls in the wrong place (a National Park) and a bear eat it and become very very excited and violent. Obviously the drug dealers are looking for it; but there a couple of kids lost and their mother trying to find them.
To my surprise; originally looked like a campy B horror movie; it was a really a very well acted comedy (well a black one) with some very violent scenes and impressive (and very gory) special effects.
Based on real events; the movie (obviously many things are imagined) the movie tris to avoid the DUMB POEPLE humor but using not good but not really that bad characters.
O'Shea Jackson Jr. Is incredible funny as drug dealer that try to look more bad that really is. Alden Ehrenreich is also good as a gay man sweeping because of his lost lover. Ray Liotta in his last performance is the more serious but still very good.
But there also a lot secondary characters that make the movie even funnier. The ambulance chase scene is outstanding but there several others almost as good.
In brief: there is some gore but the is really really fun to watch and never boriing.
Infinity Pool (2023)
BRANDON IS NOT DAVID
I am a big fan of David Cronenberg and did not hesitate to see his son movies. Well let's be realistic; he is very far from his father.
ANTIVIRAL was barely OK and PROCESSOR was better but still not a masterpiece. Well this one INFINY POOL is a big step down.
Having to good actors like Skarsgard and Goth doing one dimensional characters does not help the move. The absurd game of close up and bad filmed scenes neither. But the script is just to absurdly nuts that loses orientation in the middle of the movie.
It is never clear is about corruption; rich people abusing others or just a non sense horror movie that has no horror at al.
There are few good ideas but of the movie seems a copy of better others. Perhaps the complete version should have been better but we will have to wait another release.
In brief; if you like experimental movies it might like you but do not expect too much.
The Devil Conspiracy (2022)
A FEW GOOD IDEAS IN NOT GOOD MOVIE
Taking hints from ROSMARIE BABY and THE PROFECY with added some genetic elements (using Christ DNA to recreate the Devil) seemed interesting; but sadly that was all. The rest of the script was very poorly made.
It is a pity; acting is not Oscar worthily but is decent.; actions scenes are not espectacular but decently filmed and some gore shots were well made. Not so much the digital effects.
I do not think it was budget issue; but the lack of imagination to finish what was originally a good idea.
In brief; do not lose you time; is not boring but not terrifying either; just a failed attempt to do something that could have been far better.
Plane (2023)
OUTSTANDING ACTION MOVIE THAT WILL KEEP YOU TIED TO YOUR SEAT
PLANE is an almost perfect movie.
Gerard Butler does is a different kind of action hero; more cerebral than violent while the younger guys do most of the violent parts.
The bad guys; a bunch of (at least form me) unknow Asian guys are really terrifying.
There no inserted romances or nice ladies in what is basically a male movie.
The story itself is simple; a plane drops by accident in an island managed for some separatist rebels. The plane has no way to communicate its position and things become a survival game just for a short while.
Not abusing spectators patience. The duration es perfect.
There are couple of short tender scenes but delay the events for a few minutes; but that is nothing compared with the tension it generates the whole time.
In brief; is an excellent emotional movie that deserves an audience.
High Heat (2022)
INCREDIBLE FUNNY MORE THAN EXPECTED
Whoever is saying the movie is bad, must be very depressed person looking for non-sense violence Absolut drama and ZERO humor. This is exactly the opposite.
The movie starts in a restaurant kitchen where the lady chef, Ana, is dealing with the employees. She is the incredible good (in many senses) Olga Kurylenko. It is the opening night so she is very stressed.
Her husband and partner on the other side (Don Johnson, incredible charismatic) is just a "von vivant" doing the best to inflate the restaurant sales and make it important and exclusive.
Some mediocre criminals come by but Johnson ignores them asking to come back the next day. Things get ugly, uglier and ugliest. Mostly because Ana does not want to get her restaurant burn and she used to be an EX-KGB agent.
The movie is played with light humor and the actors are good to carry and enjoy it too. Johnson sympathetic enough to make a believable scam artist that really loves his wife and trust things to go OK. Olga is physically gifted and very believable as a (almost) retired killer.
In brief; it will not get OSCARS,do not have the highest production values but is VERY VERY ENTERATING MOVE.
