Superman Returns (2006)
2 thumbs down
What a disappointment. From the opening credits, to the costumes, to the heavy dialog, to the special effects, to the plot, this movie goes out of its way to recreate nostalgia for the original superman movie series. What a stupid direction to take. I don't go to see movies to bring back the 1980s!! What were they thinking by making this new entry in the series feel like it was actually filmed in the 80s and left in the vault. There are a couple outstanding things in this movie. Kevin Spacey gives a great performance, hopefully reclaiming his reputation from the last few clunkers he's done. And Clark Kent(Brandon Routh) is well cast for his looks and charm. i wouldn't mind seeing him in another movie. However, lex's team of thugs are comical and unconvincing, having almost apelike stupidity--in one scene, one of them hides under a table when he is afraid!!!! i mean, come on. And parker poesy looks near tears from boredom in this miscast role. I find her funny in most other films, but why she was chosen for this ridiculous role makes no sense to me. Kate Bosworth isn't exactly a shining star. there are several moments in the movie where her dialog made me cringe, and more moments where it must have made the director cringe as well, and so she is left just nodding her head in response to other actors. there is no spark of romance between any of the actors. my advice is to wait a week and go see pirates of the Caribbean
The New Adventures of Old Christine (2006)
This show is getting better
I was completely irritated by this show at first, but now it's gotten better. I was getting depressed about evening television. I thought i was stuck watching reruns of will and grace, Frasier, and friends for all time. but i hate giving up. this show made me laugh. i agree with other reviewers, she is a pathetic character on the show, but the writers are getting better. I say if you want to try an episode, try the one where she goes to the grocery show to pick up a one-night stand. There are definitely similarities to the ridiculous situations found on Seinfeld, and how these situations might look to outsiders. I also can recommend staying far away from the HBO show "curb your enthusiasm." now, that show is terrible. trying to trick people into believing that grainy film quality means "it's a reality show." come on. how contrived is that.
