A good film, Macbeth and Romeo-Juliet in a Hawaiian setting. Credible performances, but this film could have been shot in California or mostly on a soundstage. It deserves better than a 4.5 of 10 but surely not more than a 7. A poignant social, cultural commentary on Hawaii becoming a State in mid-Twentieth century.
I have seen the original Vanishing Point movie (Barry Neuman as Kowalski) and this for-tv remake. The remake is far more credible as to plot, special effects, but the acting is equally shallow. The remake does a much better job of denoting flashback segments and the car chase segments are just as enjoyable as in the original. The storyline was updated for the remake, includes air bags, stop-sticks, cell phones, nightvision goggles, and references to The Gulf War. Both films are worth the time, but I favor the remake.
In a talk show interview, Peter Falk ("Columbo") stated that his "Columbo" character was based, for the most part, on the inspector in this film, including the rumpled trenchcoat, cigar, and irritatingly persistent manner.
