The Winslow Boy (1999)
This period piece was my cup of Earl Grey!
This story of pursuing a case at all costs seems typically British. Underlying the main theme of proclaiming this young boy innocent of stealing a minute amount of cash is the superb glance at life in a privileged English household at the turn of the century. Life definitely happened at a slower pace. While some may think it moved at a ponderous pace, I am glad I rented the video so I could stop and go back to be certain of their words. The broken engagement was what "one could expect" of the upper class at that time. They were so afraid of being tainted by adverse publicity. I only hope that Sir Robert's and Catherine's paths crossed at a later date.
The Little Foxes (1941)
Could be known as "The Little Jackals"
I have been a fan of Bette Davis since I was a young child. Her riveting performance in this movie made me conscious of what a truly good actor can do. Regina (Bette) and her covetous brothers made the biblical passage "the love of money is the root of all evil" come to life.
The Little Foxes is an apt name. As animals Regina, Horace and Oscar not only would tear others to pieces to get what they want; they would eventually turn on each other to gain satisfaction.
The performance of Herbert Marshall made me immediately search for his other movies to view; I've not been disappointed. I am thankful his character was included to offset the viciousness of Regina and her brothers.
Under Suspicion (1994)
I was hooked by this series' reruns on TNT
Although I accidentally happened on this series of shows on TNT this summer while on vacation from teaching, I began watching or taping the shows daily. How did I miss this superb show when it was on prime time? I like cop drama shows very much and view Law and Order each week. It appears that as soon as I like a show, it is short lived. Law and Order is the exception. I am truly sorry that Under Suspicion was cancelled. I really cared about the characters, especially the relationship between Rose and Det. James Vitelli. I am NOT a sitcom person. I know they have their place. Bring on more dramas like Under Suspicion!
Bodies of Evidence (1992)
This show gave me a break from summer reruns.
Although I don't remember when this show was on prime time, I was glad TNT showed all the episodes this summer. Since cop dramas have become my favorite shows these days, I really enjoyed seeing them one after the other. If TNT shows them again, I will watch. It was strange to see George Clooney with a lot of hair. But slicked back hair and all, he and the rest gave enjoyable performances in my opinion.
