The film co-written by Joe Rechtman also stars Kelly Jenrette, Chase Liefeld (Sunnyside Up), Tariq Brown (Zoe Valentine), Olivia Simmons (I’m Not Here) and more.

Exclusive: Jalyn Hall (All American) has signed on to play Emmett Till in Chinonye Chukwu’s Till, MGM’s Orion Pictures announced today.
The 14-year-old actor will appear in the film alongside previously announced cast members Danielle Deadwyler and Whoopi Goldberg.
Till tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley (Deadwyler), whose pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son Emmett Louis Till became a galvanizing moment that helped lead to the creation of the civil rights movement. Mamie’s decision to have an open casket at Emmett’s funeral, and to have Jet magazine publish David Jackson’s funeral photos, was driven by her motivation to ensure people everywhere knew what had happened to her son.
The feature is based in part on the original research of Keith Beauchamp for his award-winning 2005 doc The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till.
Chukwu wrote the screenplay, based on a previous draft by Keith Beauchamp and Michael J P Reilly.

This year, the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor sparked a racial reckoning not seen in America in decades. Of course — likely not wanting to find themselves on the wrong side of history — each major studio immediately issued statements of support for the movement for Black lives. Despite this unanimous display, it wasn’t quite clear just how sincere these gestures were, and to which degree each Hollywood heavy-hitter would be willing to put their words into action with dollars in order to create a more inclusive and diverse environment.
It certainly would be to their benefit to do so. A new study published in October from the UCLA-based Center for Scholars and Storytellers included key information on the single factor that could result in a $130 million loss per film for movie studios: a lack of diversity. The study is titled “Beyond Checking A Box: A Lack...

“It’s so easy to fall back on generalisations when projects don’t work.”
Steaming platforms can dismantle pre-existing industry biases against under-represented groups, a virtual TIFF panel of three top Hollywood producers heard on Thursday (September 10).
Speaking on a session entitled ‘Killer Instincts: Powerhouse producers propelling commercial success’ where inclusion dominated the talking points, Dear White People producer Stephanie Allain said working with Netflix helped disprove an oft-repeated mantra in the US film business.
“What’s so fantastic is this this untrue adage that black films don’t travel is just completely out of the window with streaming,” said Allain.

A handful of indoor theaters opened up to customers this weekend, mostly in Texas. But under these unusual pandemic conditions, the box-office numbers don’t shed much light on what will happen when more theaters reopen with brand new titles.
With stringent safety controls including social distancing, the indoor theaters are grossing far less than the drive-ins that have remained open. And curiously, in several multiplexes, Sony’s VOD title “Bloodshot,” the Vin Diesel actioner that originally opened March 13 (the weekend before theaters closed) sold more tickets than Universal’s much-trumpeted Pvod smash “Trolls World Tour.” This suggests that the male action demo might be more willing to brave theaters than parents and children. It’s tempting to over-analyze these results.
“Trolls” remains #1 on two key charts: Amazon, which ranks by numbers of rentals (without regard to the film’s $19.99 price), as well as FandangoNOW, which lists by money taken in.

For many of us (though we New Englanders have had to suffer a bit longer) it’s officially Spring, which typically means more time to spend outdoors and less time to spend catching up on films. Considering the state of things though, we won’t jump to that conclusion too quickly. May isn’t rich with new releases, but there are plenty of gems among them including a film that’s already debuted on Netflix to positive reviews, a re-scheduled Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani comedy and a final return of the “The Trip” duo Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.

Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 are positively loaded with new Netflix originals, intriguing recent films, and even some fun new stock TV shows. While drive-in theaters remain virtually the only theaters still open in the U.S. (and a good place to see a new release like haunted-tree horror “The Wretched”), distributors are getting creative about how to release indie and foreign films.
“Jackie” director Pablo Larraín’s latest, “Ema,” debuts for free on Mubi for one day, teasing a future fall theatrical release planned by Music Box. And Oscilloscope uses the emerging virtual cinema model to debut fiction-doc hybrid “The Infiltrators,” in which undocumented activists find a way to liberate deportation-bound detainees from inside a detention center. Plus, Netflix subscribers get (at least) six original features to justify the subscription.
Here are all the new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.

In All Day and a Night, the new Netflix crime film from writer/director Joe Robert Cole, Ashton Sanders (Moonlight) plays Jahkor Abraham Lincoln, a young Oakland man whose life in one of that city’s most underserved communities has come to an all-too-familiar crossroads: does he follow in the path of his currently jailed father J.D. (Jeffrey Wright) and plunge full-on into a life of crime and gang culture, or does he pursue a different path — he wants to be a rapper and has started making his own mixtapes — and try to break the cycle for the sake of his newborn son?
Actually, as the film begins, that decision seems to be all but moot. Like way too many films these days, All Day and a Night begins near the end: we meet Jahkor as he commits a brutal, heartless crime and then watch as the movie retraces...

Netflix has confirmed that 50 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in May. Leading off the lineup are Ryan Murphy‘s limited series “Hollywood” and the debut of the comedy series “Space Force,” which reunites “The Office” star and creator Steve Carell and Greg Daniels. Also look for the sophomore season of the comedy noir “Dead to Me,” with Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.
In these trying times, we can take comfort in the slew of stand-up specials, including new sets by Jerry Seinfeld, Patton Oswalt and Hannah Gadsby. On the reality side, we can’t wait to gobble up season 2 of “Restaurants on the Edge” and season 3 of “Someone Feed Phil.”

It’s the first day of May, and Netflix is already knocking it out of the park with a big content drop to keep you busy while you’re stuck inside. Tons of great new movies and shows have landed on the service today, including plenty of wonderful classics you’re going to want to check out.
Perhaps most notable is the inclusion of Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II, which will be joining the third film to round out the trilogy. This time-traveling classic would make for excellent weekend family viewing alongside Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and its more modern adaptation, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
While those films are suitable for families, you can rest assured that Netflix has you covered on children-specific content, too. Your little ones will be happy to see multiple Thomas & Friends titles and the animated sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,...

Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders gives a compelling lead performance as a young man trying to escape his father’s shadow
It’s an unusually stacked week for new films on Netflix (one they might regret when pre-pandemic content starts to dry up) with a teen comedy, a B-thriller and a romantic documentary all launching before the weekend, a feast for viewers at home but a glut that could overshadow one of their finer offerings quietly releasing alongside. All Day and a Night, a tough-minded drama from Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole, might not be quite worthy enough for their awards slate (although it’s a damn sight more compelling than The Two Popes …) but it’s a step up from what one might expect of an unhyped May movie from the streamer. Think of it as a classier boutique release, deserving of a higher shelf placement.

The filmmakers behind “All Day and a Night” dig a big hole for their main character right off the bat. No sooner have we met aspiring Oakland rapper Jahkor (Ashton Sanders) than we see him gun down a man and his wife in front of their 10-year-old daughter — quietly, coldly and without a moment’s hesitation.
Under normal circumstances, audiences are accustomed to feeling some empathy for the leading character in the movies they see; it’s part of the moviegoing contract that the people we spend the most time watching are going to be people we can feel for, and often even like. But “All Day and a Night” reveals our leading man as a cold-blooded killer in the first five minutes, essentially daring us to feel anything for the guy for the next two hours.
It’s a bold move, particularly when Jahkor steadfastly refuses to explain himself...

There’s a scene in “All Day and a Night” that cuts you to the quick. Jahkor Lincoln (Ashton Sanders), a freelance thug and aspiring rapper in Oakland, CA., who wears a permanent hot glare of suspicion, is seated in the living room of a gang leader named Big Stunna (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Jahkor is trying to play up to the local-hood-turned-celebrity-rapper, Thug’ish Trex (James Earl), who in his long gold chain and Legend track suit carries himself like a roly-poly king. He holds the power of someone who can hook a brother up, so when he says “put that shit on,” it’s a rare opportunity.
They cue up one of Jahkor’s home-made recordings, and as it starts to play, Jahkor, though hardly a specialist in displaying emotion, closes his eyes and bobs his head up and down, sinking into the groove. He’s not a bad rapper,...

Joe Robert Cole’s “All Day and a Night” never shies away from the fact that it’s singing a familiar tune. “Same fuckin’ story on repeat” the narration sighs from the top, as if the film is already looking to scapegoat its own predictability on that of the prison-industrial complex.
But the most vital thing about this gristly piece of fiction is that it neither succumbs to miserablism nor gives in to magical thinking; Cole’s movie neither resigns to the reality of a hard-knock life, nor softens into some kind of feel-good salve about one good kid who manages to beat a game that’s rigged against him (as if the ones who don’t only have themselves to blame). There’s a fine line between resilience and false hope, and “All Day and a Night” walks it with purpose even when it’s tripping over itself.

Oakland, California, in recent years has been the setting of a number of bold, stylistically distinctive takes on race, African American identity and social conditioning, from the searing tragedy of Fruitvale Station through the hip-hop swagger of Blindspotting to the gonzo satire of Sorry to Bother You. That makes Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole's reflection on the vicious cycle of gang culture and its toll on families an earnest but unrewarding disappointment. Saddled with an excess of voiceover and a shuffled flashback structure that keep the characters at an emotional distance, All Day and a Night feels familiar in both its bleakness and ...

“Aquaman” actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in final negotiations to join Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” sources tell Variety.

The movie is based on the infamous 1969 trial of seven men charged by the federal government with conspiracy and inciting to riot, a result of the counterculture protests in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation intended to undermine the U.S. government.
