T’is the season — for male strippers? Yes, actually. Yes indeed.
Netflix’s new Christmas movie “The Merry Gentlemen” is now streaming, telling story of a young dancer who comes home to find that her parents’ business — and thus, her whole childhood, essentially — may be going under. So, to help save it, she organizes a Christmas-themed male revue to pull in ticket sales.
The movie features a lot of familiar faces, but perhaps some new ones for you too. So, we’ve got you covered.
Here are all the major players in “The Merry Gentlemen.”
Netflix Ashley (Britt Robertson)
Ashley is a professional dancer, who is unceremoniously fired for being too old (in her 30s). She’s played by “Tomorrowland” and “The Longest Ride” star Britt Robertson. She also starred in “The Space Between Us” and more recently, “The Rookie: Feds,” as well as a few episodes of “The Rookie.

British actor Janet Montgomery has landed a starring role as a young Faye Dunaway in Jonathan Baker’s supernatural love story “Fate,” a film that is shooting in Vancouver for Baker Entertainment.
The film will toggle between a yesteryear version of the character (Montgomery) and a present-day incarnation (Dunaway), spanning much of the protagonist’s entire lifetime. “Fate” revolves around a firefighter (Brandon Routh) who connects with a stranger from the past Tilly (Montgomery) while he’s healing at a rehabilitation center and is transported through time to find the only thing saving his soul — his realization of true love, according to a producer’s logline.
Highland Film Group is selling rights to the $10 million film, which also stars Harvey Keitel, at the Cannes Marche.
Dunaway is on the ground in Cannes, where HBO screened the much-anticipated biographical documentary “Faye.”

In “Sing 2,” the sequel to Illumination’s animated box office hit, “Sing,” Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) and his troupe sneak into the Vegas-like tourist oasis and con their way into mounting “Out of This World,” a Cirque du Soleil-inspired musical space show, climaxing with a surprise appearance by reclusive lion rock star legend, Clay Calloway (Bono).
The third act musical extravaganza represents Illumination’s most ambitious work to date in terms of design, costumes, animation, choreography, playlist, and performance. The theme of breaking artistic barriers was also personal to director Garth Jennings, since the “Sing” sequel marked only his second animated feature.
“The whole movie, when you break it down into its parts, is incredibly simple and relatable,” Jennings said. “The Clay story and his grief is the emotional soul of the film. There was no one else we had in mind besides [U2 star] Bono. It had to...

Buster Moon has a dream: to be the most successful koala in showbiz. In “Sing,” he managed to salvage the run-down venue where his musical theater ambitions might thrive, much to the delight of family audiences. Now, in that toon’s jam-packed “let’s put on a show” sequel, Buster Moon and his menagerie of pigs, primates and other crooning critters head to Redshore City — the Las Vegas-like entertainment capital of their parallel universe, which is basically human in every way except for the fact that there are no humans to be found in it — to launch a massive song-and-dance extravaganza.

Logan Paul, the YouTube personality and podcaster who has also dabbled in boxing most recently fighting former world champion Floyd Mayweather to a draw in a pay-per-view exhibition match, has signed with WME.
In addition to his nascent boxing career, Paul hosts the ImPaulsive podcast featuring celebrity guests, athletes, comedians and more. It has more than 2.7 million followers on YouTube, which has been his primary platform after getting his start posting short videos on the now-shuttered Vine.
YouTube and Paul have had a contentious partnership; the platform suspended ads on Paul’s channel at least twice, both in 2018, once for posting video from a trip to Japan’s Aokigahara forest in which he encountered a suicide victim, and another for posting a video of himself tasing a dead rat. He later apologized for both incidents and was eventually reinstated. His main YouTube channel now has more that 23 million subscribers.

As it continues to produce highend films and TV programs that examine the wonders of the natural world, science and history, Terra Mater Factual Studios is also seeking to broaden its audience and educate viewers about the precarious state of life on Earth.
Whether it’s the poaching of endangered African elephants for China’s illicit ivory trade or the planned plunder of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by America’s oil industry oligarchs, the planet’s precious wildlife is facing dangers that threaten its continued existence. Terra Mater has achieved great success with its theatrical and television output over the past decade in showcasing such issues, but the Austrian company is aiming to attract and inspire new viewers with less traditional productions, including an unlikely comedy.
To that end, Terra Mater is turning its focus to impact-driven environmental topics while also creating mainstream appeal for its productions, says Michael Frenschkowski,...

A copyright lawsuit claiming Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar winner “The Shape of Water” stole from the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Zindel has been dismissed (via The Hollywood Reporter). Both “Shape of Water” and Zindel’s play “Let Me Hear You Whisper” involve plots centered on a creature imprisoned in a science research facility. The lawsuit was originally filed by Zindel’s family in February 2018 just ahead of the Oscar voting deadline. “The Shape of Water” contended for 13 Academy Awards, winning Best Picture and Best Director, among other prizes.
A spokesperson for Searchlight Pictures said in a statement (via THR): “David Zindel, the son of Paul Zindel, author of ‘Let Me Hear You Whisper,’ acknowledges, based on confidential information obtained during the litigation process, that his claims of plagiarism are unfounded. He acknowledges Guillermo del Toro as the true creator of ‘The Shape of Water.’ Any similarity...

Stars: Kevin Mischel, Aurélia Poirier, Jean-Louis Garçon, Tadrina Hocking | Written and Directed by Mark Fouchard
Written and directed by Mark Fouchard, Out of the World is a stylish French horror that centres on the connection formed between two people who struggle to communicate with the normal world. It’s variously known by its original title, Hors du Monde, and by a slightly tweaked translation, Out of this World.
Kevin Mischel stars as Leo, a gifted musician suffering from a severe past trauma. Unable to work as a composer, he makes a living as a taxi driver, but he struggles with extremely violent impulses and may, in fact, be a killer. However, when he picks up deaf dancer Amélie (Aurélia Poirier), something stirs in Leo, not least because she can sense something in his music that others can’t, and the pair begin a tentative relationship.

Here’s a unique flick, unlike nearly any other film now at your multiplex (or single screens or drive-ins down south). That’s mainly because it’s a mix of several film genres (if it were a meal would it be a stew or a petite buffet). It’s a coming of age story since it’s about a young man leaving his midwestern hometown for college in sunny ‘Cal. And he meets “the girl” and begins a romance, so it’s a love story. Like the fifty-plus-year-old flick of that name, things don’t go…smoothly, so it’s a “tear-jerker”. Oh, did I mention that this college kid is a real guy? Yup, it’s a biography and a musical one at that since he’s a singer. Actually he’s one of the most popular contemporary Christian singers of the last couple of decades, so this movie...

We might have only had one season, plus a couple of specials, of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s amazing chemistry as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble on screen, but thankfully the two Doctor Who icons have been giving us new adventures for the duo over the past few years, since they started making audio dramas for Big Finish Productions.
Following a couple of boxsets of The Tenth Doctor Adventures, the latest release featuring the pair is Donna Noble: Kidnapped, a spinoff series focusing on Tate’s companion. Set following 2008’s “Forest of the Dead,” when Donna is taking a break from her time travels, Tate’s co-lead in this collection of four stories is her former The Catherine Tate Show co-star Niki Wardley. However, Tennant will pop up for a brief cameo in the final adventure.
Here’s the synopsis for the set, as per Big Finish’s...

By now, there's a good chance you've heard of Sex Education on Netflix (in the case that you haven't already binge-watched the whole thing) and thus, you've also heard of 22-year-old British actor Asa Butterfield. He plays Otis Milburn in the buzzy show: a timid, insecure freshman navigating the waters of high school and, well, sex. It's a must see - not only because it's seriously relatable, but because it touches on the awkward stuff that few shows will really dig into.
But there's also a good chance you recognize him from his lead role as a young boy in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in 2008, Ender's Game in 2013, The Space Between Us in 2017, or maybe one of his many other big-screen appearances. Asa's acting career has only just begun, and we can't wait to see his résumé bulk up even more in the next few years. In the meantime,...

He may have the same piercing baby blues as The End of the F***ing World's Alex Lawther and The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore, but believe it or not, neither Lawther nor Highmore is the actor who plays Otis Milburn on the Netflix series Sex Education. Otis - an inexperienced high school student who decides to team up with a bad girl and open an underground sex therapy clinic at school, thanks to the advice bestowed on him by his sex therapist mother - is actually played by Asa Butterfield, and if you don't recognize his name, then you should. The 21-year-old English actor began his career at the ripe age of 9, and we have a feeling that Sex Education is not the first time you've seen him on the screen.

“The Upside,” a feel good film about the bond that forms between a wealthy quadriplegic and his caretaker, scored a surprising box office victory last weekend. The movie had to overcome a series of obstacles and setbacks before it topped charts.
In the weeks leading up to the drama’s release, star Kevin Hart had been the subject of countless headlines analyzing whether or not the comedian will host this year’s Oscars. The entertainer was offered the gig, but quickly stepped down after controversy sparked over homophobic jokes he made in the past. A little unwanted press, however, is nothing compared to the turmoil leading up to the movie’s theatrical debut.
Its rocky gestation to the big screen makes “The Upside,” which doubled industry expectations with a $19.5 million opening weekend, all the more impressive. An English-language remake of the French hit “Les Intouchables” was first announced in 2011, and...
