The first solo rants were done to not have a prolonged dry spell of content between seasons of scripted episodes. As creator Vera Wylde began to exhaust her ideas for scripted gags the solo rants became the primary format of the show.
The show was originally conceived as a traditional half hour sit-com. It was to focus on roommates Dave and Matt while featuring a relationship component with the inclusion of their friend Kathy and her girlfriend Gina. After years of trying to force the show into this format, creator Vera Wylde decided to take the unconnected single scenes she'd written and shoot them as individual short pieces that would last only as long as it took to do get the joke across.
Many of the actors and guest panelists who appear in the early years of the show met creator Vera Wylde through the community theater group The St. Johnsbury Players. This includes Nathan Colpitts, Nicole Bradford, Paul D. Scavitto, Ryan Daly and Calvin Longe.
