An Unapologetic View of Lima

Rosa Chumbe" (2015, Yin Zhang Films) directed and written by Jonatan Relayze and stars Liliana Trujillo as the main protagonist, "Rosa". This film is centered on an urban tale of a middle aged woman struggling with alcoholism.

This film which was submitted by Peru for the Oscars foreign film category was met with negative reviews by some film critics in the U.S.. Maybe because the film shows a very gritty and unapologetic perspective of the urban life in Lima, Peru. Rosa who is a police cop lives a life of addiction, from drinking too much and gambling. She lives as a single mother with her daughter, Sheyla and a child.

As the story unfolds, the film follows their two lives in the city, dealing with tragedy. This style of film is reminiscent of a past Brazilian film, "Central Station" because of its documentary-styled feel.
