Terrence Malick’s magnificent new drama A Hidden Life, which finds him reteaming with Fox Searchlight after his magnum opus The Tree of Life, is currently enjoying screenings at Tiff ahead of a December release, but the recently-prolific director isn’t resting on his laurels. It was revealed earlier this summer that he embarked on production on The Last Planet, a film that would convey passages in the life of Christ through representing evangelical parables.
Now, we have more enticing details, including the first cast members. Oscar winner Mark Rylance unveiled he’s part of the film, as well as two more additions to the ensemble, while speaking to Allocine at the Deauville American Film Festival. Matthias Schoenaerts, who has a role in A Hidden Life, will reteam with the director, while Son of Saul star Géza Röhrig is also coming on board.

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.
#52 — Katharine “Kay” Graham, pioneering Washington Post publisher who authorized the printing of the Pentagon Papers.
John: Since it was first announced in March of 2017, deep into the first hundred days of the Trump presidency, The Post moved at a breakneck speed from rewriting to shooting to post-production before it quickly arrived in theaters in December of that year. Spielberg had paused production on his historical drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara and after reading a spec script by Liz Hannah, set the gears into motion on The Post, assembling his usual team, along with two screen legends who had never before shared a single frame. This urgent sense of timeliness is palpable in The Post, which is both a riveting period piece about a landmark historical moment and a rousing paean to the free press in our distressing present.

As well as starring in the movie, Depp will develop and produce through his Infinitum Nihil production.

The film will be directed by Embrace of the Serpent’s Ciro Guerra, Andrea Iervolino will also produce alongside Depp for the recently launched social entertainment platform TaTaTu.

Disney dropped a number of release-date changes this morning, chiefly — as we already knew two weeks ago — that Indiana Jones 5 will miss its original July 10, 2020 release date. Instead, Disney has pushed the Steven Spielberg-directed movie to July 9, 2021. That’s because Spielberg is in pre-production on a reboot of West Side Story and even looking at directing The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara with Oscar winner Mark Rylance. Also, Jonathan Kasdan is in the middle of signing his contract to rewrite Indiana Jones 5.
Without a Star Wars movie on the holiday schedule, Disney is moving up its anticipated musical Mary Poppins Returns by one week from Christmas Day to Wednesday, December 19. The pic now will debut before such December 21 releases as Aquaman, Bumblebee, Alita: Battle Angel, Welcome to Marwen and Holmes & Watson. Something else has to budge off that release date on to Christmas Day. The weekend prior to Mary Poppins Returns,...

The fifth Indiana Jones directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford has been pushed back by months, perhaps even a year. Spielberg is in pre-production on a West Side Story remake and is also looking to direct Mark Rylance in the historical drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara. Also, Indiana Jones 5 screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan has yet to sign his deal, but reportedly will do so to give the pic a polish after David Koepp’s first draft. Indiana Jones will now miss its July 10, 2020 release date. Through four movies, the Indiana Jones franchise has racked up close to $2 billion worldwide. Variety had the news.

Indiana Jones will not be riding back into theaters on July 10, 2020.
The fifth film in the adventure series will miss its original release date, Variety has learned. Filming was supposed to begin in April of 2019 in the United Kingdom, but sources close to the production say that shooting will no longer start next spring and will have to be pushed back by months, if not a year. Potential crew members have already been informed of the delay.
Part of the issue is that the key members of the creative team have yet to sign off on a finished script. Collider reported on Thursday that Jonathan Kasdan, son of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” scribe Lawrence Kasdan, has been enlisted to deliver a new draft. A deal has yet to close to bring the writer on board, but it looks as though he will soon join the project. David Koepp (“Jurassic Park...

There’s at least one member of the “Star Wars” galaxy who might not be saddling up for any further adventures after J.J. Abrams’ “Episode IX” wraps the Skywalker saga in 2019. NME reports (from a chat on California radio station Kusc) that longtime composer John Williams might be leaving the franchise after Abrams’ film arrives in 2019.
Williams told Kusc: “We know J.J. Abrams is preparing one [‘Star Wars’ movie] now that I will hopefully do next year for him. I look forward it. It will round out a series of nine, that will be quite enough for me.”
The film would be the ninth “Star Wars” feature for the lauded composer, as he’s previously scored the original film “A New Hope,” plus sequels “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” followed by prequels “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones,” “Revenge of the Sith,” and the latest installments “The...

Steven Spielberg, like Ridley Scott, shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. With The Post already gracing the big screen and Ready Player One waiting in the wings, the veteran director is eyeing up his next two projects.
The projects currently being banded around is a fifth Indiana Jones, with a new screen version of West Side Story to follow shortly afterwards. Since 2015, it was rumoured that Spielberg wanted to relaunch Indiana Jones casting Chris Pratt alongside Harrison Ford. David Koepp has been set to pen the script for the fifth outing under Lucasfilm. Disney had scheduled it for a 2020 release but as yet no deal has been finalised.
West Side Story is another much-admired project that Spielberg has wanted to do for some time. Spielberg collaborator Tony Kushner has been working on the script for the revamped version of this 1961 musical which was co-directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins.

He turned 70 last year, but Steven Spielberg is showing no signs of slowing down. Indeed, the most successful director of his, or any, generation is only becoming more prolific: this weekend’s announcement that his Washington Post/Pentagon Papers movie with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep will open in December means that he’s set to make at least five movies in five years (“Bridge Of Spies” in 2015, “The Bfg” in 2016,” the already-wrapped “Ready Player One” in 2018 and the fifth Indiana Jones in 2019, potentially with “The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara,” which was delayed for the Hanks/Streep picture, coming too).

Steven Spielberg Does What He Wants: 6 Things Every Fan Must Know About Hollywood’s Biggest Director
We all know that Steven Spielberg floats at the top of the Hollywood food chain. He’s Hollywood’s most reliable director brand, and can get movies made that would never get a greenlight anywhere else — like Oscar-winning historical drama “Lincoln.” His next move? A high-profile Pentagon Papers film rumored to star Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep that Variety reports will open on December 22, and will inevitably be an Oscar contender.
How does he keep his enviable status, even at age 70?
1. Steven does what Steven wants.
Spielberg is a moving target, even for those at Amblin Entertainment who work closely with him every day. While he’s worth some $3 billion and likes to make money, his directing choices are driven by a complicated set of variables. He seeks to avoid any risk of failure. It all depends on where his confidence — and artistic drive — takes him. Is he ready to...

Steven Spielberg. Tom Hanks. Meryl Streep. Sounds like a team bound for Oscar glory, no?
This "dream team" has assembled for the film The Post, about the Washington Post's involvement in exposing the Pentagon Papers in 1971. Hanks will play the Washington Post's editor Ben Bradlee while Streep will portray his publisher Kay Graham. Both worked with the New York Times to challenge the federal government in order to publish the classified study about the Vietnam War commissioned by the Defense Department.
Were you not convinced The Post had Oscar potential before that bit of info? Now that you know we have a timely drama similar to Spotlight and All The President's Men on our hands, it is quite obvious why Amblin and Fox decided to fast-track the picture, even though it was just announced last week!

Our salute to Steven Spielberg at 70 considers his most recent work, such as Lincoln, War Horse, Tintin, Bridge Of Spies and The Bfg.
There’s a scene early on in Lincoln where the film stops to listen to a man tell a story. This is made a little less remarkable for the fact that the man in question is Abraham Lincoln and the story is part of a wider point the President is making about the abolition of slavery. But regardless it’s a unique moment and one that sums up Steven Spielberg’s current cinema. Quiet and thoughtful, it’s a sequence that homes in on the power of words and the significance of storytelling, and Spielberg captures that weight with directorial reverence: three minute-plus long takes that draw us into the room and leave us captivated by Lincoln’s words. For Spielberg, one of the...

Co-chief Raffaella Leone talks future plans for the high-end distribution and production outfit.
Italy’s historic film company the Leone Film Group – founded by late “spaghetti western” maestro Sergio Leone and now run by his heirs Andrea and Raffaella - has gone from strength to strength since floating on the Milan stock market at the end of 2013. Under the new management of Leone’s children, it has expanded into a major high-end distribution and production player in Italy, updating its line-up to appeal to younger generations in the process.
The company currently has output deals with Lionsgate, DreamWorks and Summit Entertainment and has several high-profile titles on its slate this year including La La Land, The Girl On The Train and Hacksaw Ridge. Looks like there may be some bad blood between Steven Spielberg and Harvey Weinstein.
A few months ago, Spielberg announced that he'll follow Ready Player One with a movie called The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which Lincoln and Munich screenwriter Tony Kushner has adapted from David Kertzer's book. Here's the description, just to get you up to speed:
Bologna: nightfall, June 1858. A knock sounds at the door of the Jewish merchant Momolo Mortara. Two officers of the Inquisition bust inside and seize Mortara's six-year-old son, Edgardo. As the boy is wrenched from his father's arms, his mother collapses. The reason for his abduction: the boy had been secretly "baptized" by a family servant. According to papal law, the child is therefore a Catholic who can be taken from his family and delivered to a special monastery where his conversion will be completed. With this terrifying scene, prize-winning historian David I. Kertzer...

We're going to see Oscar Isaac in a Steven Spielberg. I'm excited at that prospect alone, details be damned. But for those of you who want a little more information, let me fill you in. Isaac is in talks to join the cast of Spielberg's The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara, which depicts the real-life case of a young Jewish boy in 1858 Italy who is secretly baptized... Read More...

The Emmy voters snubbed Show Me A Hero yesterday, though they continued to rubber-stamp nominations for all things Modern Family-related. It’s possible that many of them simply resubmitted last year’s ballot, from which David Simon’s exceptional limited series was absent, because its air date left it out of 2015 Emmy contention. We’re obviously still be a bit sore about it, but Oscar Isaac seems to be doing well. He’s got Star Wars: Episode VIII in the works, and he’s just wrapped production on his second Alex Garland film, Annihilation. Oh, and according to Variety, he’s just signed on to the new Steven Spielberg movie—all in all, not a bad week.
The film, titled The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara, already boasts Oscar winner (no, not that one) Mark Rylance in the cast, who’s almost certainly vying for a shared entry with ...

It’s still about four movies away in terms of Steven Spielberg’s calendar — “The Bfg” opens next week, we get “The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara” in the fall of 2017, then “Ready Player One” in early 2018 (it actually shoots first, but has heavy VFX components and moved out of the way of “Star Wars”) […]

Steven Spielberg admits he's "super excited" about Indiana Jones 5 - and that Indy is set to survive it...
Steven Spielberg has kicked off his publicity tour for the forthcoming The Bfg (which lands in cinemas next month), and as such, the question of Indiana Jones 5 has inevitably come up.
Spielberg is likely to get to the next Indiana Jones film, starring Harrison Ford, once he’s done shooting his next project, Ready Player One (although he might fit in The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara in there too). As such, it’s still early days for the new Indy adventure.
But in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg admits that he’s “super excited” for Indiana Jones 5. “I think this one is straight down the pike for the fans”, he said, although he hasn’t disclosed any plot details at this stage.
He did offer one (fairly important) tease, though: “the one thing I will tell you is I'm not killing off Harrison [Ford] at the end of it”.
We wouldn’t take that as there being an Indiana Jones 6 following the next one. But at least Indy will live to fight another day, if he wants to…

Steven Spielberg appears to have found his next directorial effort, taking the helm of "The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara" for Amblin Entertainment.
Tony Kushner penned this adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winner David Kertzer's 1997 book which recounts the story of a young Jewish boy in Bologna, Italy in 1858. Having been secretly baptized, he is forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian.
The struggle to free him becomes part of a larger political battle that pits the Papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification. Mark Rylance, who has become a 'go to' actor for Spielberg with last year's "Bridge of Spies" and this year's "The Bfg," will star as Pope Pius IX here.
Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce with filming to begin early 2017 for a release during awards season next year.

Director Steven Spielberg is heading into an incredibly busy streak, and he’s taking fellow Academy Award winner Mark Rylance with him. Having cast the actor in 2015’s Bridge Of Spies, to great acclaim, Spielberg then found a spot for him in his forthcoming rendition of Roald Dahl’s The Bfg, and has now confirmed that this fledgling creative partnership will continue with The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara.
Based on the 1997 book by Pulitzer Prize winner David Kertzer, and adapted for the screen by Tony Kushner (Lincoln, Munich, Angels In America), The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara is set in Italy, in 1858, and tells a story of religious and social intrigue that would have ramifications far beyond the community in which it begins.
Here’s the full plot summary:
“Bologna: nightfall, June 1858. A knock sounds at the door of the Jewish merchant Momolo Mortara. Two officers of the Inquisition bust inside...

Fear not, Spielbergers. The man behind Lincoln, Jurassic Park and so many famous films is not about to snatch some unfortunate from the street and risk the wrath of Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills. Instead, The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara is yet another potential project for Spielberg to direct. There’s every chance the script will spend time cooling its heels in Spielberg’s development pile, though, since this is still in an embryonic form. If he does decide to take it on, Mortara would see a reunion between the director and his Munich/Lincoln collaborator, Tony Kushner. The writer is adapting David Kertzer’s novel, which charts the true story of a seven-year-old Italian Jew thrust into controversy in 1858 when he was taken from his parents and raised as a Catholic by authorities of the Papacy. He ended up becoming a priest. Even if he doesn't end up making the film himself,...
