"It's not Father Ted", "It's not Father Ted". Yes it's not Father Ted. It is however a decent sitcom that's reasonably removed from the tedious trash constantly being churned out (Mrs Browns Boys etc..). It does build characters well through the 3 episodes. By the third episode I found myself disappointed that there was no more and really hope it get's a full series commissioned. I'll accept there are some very lazy Irish family stereotypes used as a basis for SOME of the humour but that's such an obvious criticism. The whole thing is so loosely based on reality that it doesn't really stack up. If you suspend reality then it's just funny in a daft sort of way.
Lines like "Do you remember that country Thailand?", "Where's Ron Jeremy gonna sleep?", and "You look like you're gonna steal a horse and sell it for heroin!" are just what you'd expect from anyone associated with Black Books. I don't see how this didn't take off. Great writing and classic timing. "She's fine during (her monthly), its just the three- week lead up can be a little bit tense." The parents were extremely well played. I only just discovered Black Books and loved how so many plots could be done in the shop. This "family" show set in the home could've provided so many good times based on the first three episodes. The only disappointing thing about this show is that it ended.

Graham Linehan has failed with this one. It is an awful attempt at humor. I was so excited for this show and it disappointed me so so much. The IT Crowd worked, it was no Fr Ted but it worked. The Walshes is awful. Linehan has spent too long in the UK to understand contemporary Irish society. His characters are labored and poorly acted. Diet of Worms are not funny in this show. It is way way way worse that the YouTube series it was based on. Fr Ted is comedy gold, simply the greatest TV sitcom ever. The Walshes is more Damo and Ivor than Ted. My recommendation to any prospective viewers is forget Linehan is involved in this and that somebody as talented as him could produce such sh1te and you perhaps may enjoy it.
