Recent reports suggest that the cast for Iñárritu’s next cinematic escapade reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

The screenplay, a brainchild of Iñárritu along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, tells the tale of a man with untold power who’s caused a colossal mess but must convince humanity that he’s their knight in shining armor.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Tom Cruise will be starring in the new film from director Alejandro Iñárritu for Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, with this being Iñárritu’s first English language movie since The Revenant, which hit theatres back in 2015. Now Deadline has revealed the names of six of Cruise’s co-stars, breaking the news that he has been joined in the cast by John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), Jesse Plemons (Civil War), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name), with Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) in final negotiations to join in as well. Monday Am: Turns out that high holy day of NFL yesterday which resulted in the Chiefs and the 49ers heading to the Super Bowl did pull guys away from Amazon MGM’s The Beekeeper. While the Jason Statham Miramax title did win Saturday over Paramount’s Mean Girls, $3.4M to $3.27M, Sunday belonged to the Plastics which saw the teen musical movie pull ahead with a third weekend of $6.9M to Beekeeper‘s $6.7M.

Mean Girls‘ Sunday was $1.7M, -48% from Saturday, while Beekeeper‘s take was $1.48M. Worldwide, Beekeeper crossed $100M ($41.5M domestic), while Mean Girls stands at $83M ($60.4M from domestic).

This weekend, Apple Original Films’ Matthew Vaughn directed all-star spy ensemble, Argylle, looks to open in the teens. More on that later.

Two Japanese mid-length films - Chime by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and August My Heaven by Riho Kudo - will play as Berlinale Specials.

Andersen’s The Strangers’ Case is about a tragedy that strikes a Syrian family in Aleppo which triggers a chain reaction of events involving five different families in four different countries. The cast includes Omar Sy, Jason Beghe and Yasmine Al Massri.

Jake Gyllenhaal‘s new movie Road House is scheduled to debut on Amazon’s Prime Video on March 21 and the film is set to have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, but don’t expect to see director Doug Liman there.

Doug just announced that he is protesting the SXSW premiere in response to Amazon’s decision to skip a theatrical release for the movie, which he says was made for theaters.

For those who don’t know, Doug is the director of movies like The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, and American Made.

The new take on Road House follows a former UFC fighter (Gyllenhaal) who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.

For only the second time since mid-June, Suits is not the No. 1 title in Nielsen’s streaming rankings.

That honor belongs to Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher, which snagged the top spot for the week of Oct. 9-15. Writer-director Mike Flanagan’s spin on the titular Edgar Allan Poe story (and several others by the author) drew 1.23 billion minutes of viewing, edging out the 1.13 billion for Suits.

The latter series continued its months-long run above the billion-minute mark, however, and has now compiled almost 44.4 billion minutes (about 739.8 million hours) of viewing on Netflix and Peacock since it first hit the rankings in June. Nielsen notes that viewing of Suits’ ninth and final season, which is only available on Peacock, accounted for 6 percent of the weekly tally (about 67.6 million minutes) — the highest percentage for those episodes since the other eight seasons debuted on Netflix.

David Beckham docuseries “Beckham” held onto the top spot on Netflix’s most-watched TV shows list, beating the debut viewership for Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” by over 5 million viewers.

As the sports series maintained its lead on the English TV list for the second week in a row as it logged an additional 11.6 million views this week, the horror drama miniseries took the No. 2 spot on the list as it tallied 6 million views since its Oct. 12 release.

Next up was the fourth and final season of “Sex Education,” which took the No. 3 spot on the list with 4 million views, while docuseries “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul” came fourth on the list with 3.1 million views and “Love Is Blind” Season 5 took the No.

Looking at PVOD and Netflix charts this week reveals some significant findings.

The just-debuted “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” tops all lists in its first week of release as assumed. That comes 90 days after its release. Did theaters benefit? Not really.

Netflix has a top 10 with eight studio titles, six from Universal, including #1 “Tammy” with Melissa McCarthy. But the big news here? “Fair Play,” last week’s #1 and a $20 million Sundance acquisition for the streamer, dropped off the list after only eight days.

Both suggest a result that could influence future decisions. For “Reckoning,” the hope was that delaying its initial home release 90 days would extend its theatrical run. That didn’t happen.

In the 30 days up to its PVOD release, it grossed less than $2 million in theaters. This year, only a handful of films have had a 60 days or longer window, most at close to that time.

Cross Creek Pictures has acquired “The Sessions,” a new screenplay from writer and former Paramount Pictures executive Tom 8. Hayes.

The screenplay is based on true events, telling a story set amidst the New York City jazz scene of the mid-1950s. It focuses on the relationship between musical genius Miles Davis and the retiring Jewish optometrist-turned-sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder, the pioneering creator of new recording methods. According to the official description, “in one of the most remarkable feats in music history, the pair overcame the record label, the New York City mob and the siren call of booze, drugs and women, to produce four breakthrough albums in just three recording sessions – an unprecedented accomplishment that changed the music industry forever. “

“The Equalizer 3” (Sony) debuted on PVOD at $19.99 with #1 placement at both iTunes and Vudu. It’s #5 at Google Play, which seems to be lagging worse than usual; its titles haven’t changed in four days, which likely affects some rankings.

Meantime, “Fair Play,” the relationship thriller that premiered to acclaim at Sundance last January, is an immediate #1 at Netflix. The streamer paid $20 million for worldwide rights, a bargain against the production costs for other Netflix Originals.

The Denzel Washington franchise, currently #8 in theaters with $86 million domestic gross, added PVOD after 32 days. “The Nun II” (Warner Bros.), currently #7 at the box office with $81 million, arrived a week sooner at 25 days at $19.99. It is #2 at Vudu (which lists by revenue) and lags elsewhere: It’s #5 at iTunes and #10 at Google Play.

Monday Am: It wasn’t a tie as many had Nun 2 and A Haunting in Venice far apart at the box office yesterday, but the New Line horror pic’s second weekend really did win in the end with a $14.5M take, -56%, to the Kenneth Branagh pic’s opening of $14.3M.

Nun 2‘s domestic stands at $56.3M, putting the Conjuring universe of movies’ global box office at $742M stateside, $2.17 billion global.

Nun 2 ‘s Sunday was higher than Haunting‘s $3.95M to $3.4M.

Comscore called this past weekend at $62.4M, which is the second worst Ytd. Don’t expect any great miracles this weekend with Lionsgate/Millenium’s long-in-the-tooth, Expand4bles opening. The third film back in 2014 opened to $15.8M and finaled at $39.3M domestic.

Sunday Am: It looks like Hercule Poirot doesn’t have a prayer at winning the box office this weekend, with Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting in Venice losing No.

Cruise felt that the idea of promoting movies around the world came from him. According to Contact Music, Cruise was promoting his 1986 feature Top Gun at the time in Paris. While stuck there, he kept thinking about how others were taking care of his films back on set.

“It took four months [to do] this tour… You’d spend weeks in one place… [Martin] Scorsese was editing The Color of Money, we were at an early draft of Rain Man and I was there in Paris and I was like, ‘I wanna make movies,’” Cruise said.

Sunday Am Writethrough after Saturday Am update: As the Hollywood labor stoppage continues, the 2023 box office rally rages on, as domestic box office soars past $6 billion, +22% over the same January-August period a year ago. This weekend for all movies stands at an estimated $178M. This is the fourth time in box office history to have four movies cross $25M; the last time was Thanksgiving weekend 2018.

We always knew this weekend would beat the first frame of August a year ago ($92M), and that’s happening at +94%. But the current Friday-Sunday is also kicking the first weekend of August 2019’s $148.99M by +20%, and that’s when Hobbs & Shaw ruled the chart.

Barbie remains box office queen bee with $53M in weekend 3, after a $17M Friday and $20M Saturday. By Eod, Barbie is roughly $40M shy from passing the half billion mark at the domestic box office, with her gross set to stand at $459.4M.
