The highly anticipated Moana 2 is nearing its release and fans are buzzing with anticipation. Most children who enjoyed the original thoroughly in 2016 and sang their hearts out, are now adults and will swarm the theatres to re-live the nostalgia.
Moana 2 | Disney
So the expectations for the sequel are sky-high, especially for the film’s soundtracks, after all, music isn’t just background noise when it comes to Disney, it’s the heartbeat of every story. However, people are feeling that the magic that Lin-Manuel Miranda brought to the experience is absent. So what exactly led to this noticeable void, and will Disney pay for it?
The New Music Duo That Took Over Moana 2’s Music Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear | DisneyMusicVevo / YouTube
Disney handed the reigns of all Moana 2 soundtracks to Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, two Grammy-winning artists who found their breakthrough on TikTok when they started posting Bridgerton-inspired musicals.

It’s a special weekend when two films open over $50 million: Distributors with potential blockbusters like to avoid each other. But here we are: “Wicked” (Universal) opened to a stellar $114 million, while estimates for “Gladiator II” (Paramount) are $55 million. Their combined $169 million U.S./Canada gross created more than 80 percent of the $207 million weekend total.
That represents about two-thirds of the “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer” July 2023 weekend ($310 million), when the two grossed $162 million and $82 million, respectively. In a remarkable replay, the female-appealing film nearly doubled the male-skewing title and with similar gender ratios. “Wicked” was 71 percent female (versus “Barbie” 68 percent), “Gladiator II” 61 percent male (“Oppenheimer” was initially 64 percent male).
Like “Oppenheimer,” premium screens boosted “Gladiator II.” IMAX provided $9.4 million of its domestic total; “Wicked” saw less than half of that. By comparison, “Barbie” had fewer premium screens and no IMAX imprint.

Auli’i Cravalho is full of “Polynesian pride” at the U.K. premiere for the long-awaited sequel of Disney’s Moana.
She and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, returning in Moana 2 to reprise their roles as the titular princess and as demigod Maui, braved a stormy London blue carpet on Sunday at Cineworld cinema in Leicester Square. Only moments before their arrival, a group of dancers performed a Polynesian dance for the fan-flanked event, head-to-toe in traditional garb. Johnson did minimal press before moving on to take photographs with fans.
Cravalho, who was just 14 when she was first cast as the Wayfinder heroine, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about leveling up from the original movie and spotlighting “the myths and mythology that I grew up with.”
“If our last film was about connecting with the past, this film is about connecting with the future,” the native Hawaiian said. “And we have...

The WWE icon, already one of Hollywood’s highest-paid film stars, has shown himself to be ‘focus group-proof’
It’s proving to be a busy period for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, sometime WWE professional wrestler and Hollywood film star. Well, another one. Red One, a Christmas-themed action movie (Johnson plays Santa Claus’s bodyguard), was released earlier this month. The Disney animation, Moana 2 (for which he voices the tattooed demigod Maui) is about to be released. He is also in the process of filming the new live-action version of Moana, and embarking on another Disney movie, Monster Jam.
If anyone is surprised by Johnson’s repeated donning of the cinematic mouse ears, or by his general presence in children’s films, they shouldn’t be. While he is probably still best known for the Fast & Furious film franchise, and other flexes of his big-screen muscle, he has long...

Even a whopping eight years after the original "Moana" first hit theaters and instantly became a modern Disney classic, it sure seems like there's no telling how far the sequel will go (see what I did there?) in its quest to capture that lightning in a bottle all over again. For the nerds among us, the early box office tracking is pointing towards another Thanksgiving weekend juggernaut, much like what happened with its predecessor back in 2016. As far as general audiences are concerned, the marketing for "Moana 2" -- with trailers foregrounding the fan-favorite title character, the return of Dwayne Johnson's chaotic demi-god Maui, and those lovable coconuts -- has been as on-point as we'd expect from a major Disney production. All signs are pointing up as we sail headfirst into the final days before release ... but how about what critics have to say?

When Dwayne Johnson dropped a clever reference to Bruce Willis’ $143M blockbuster in Red One, fans couldn’t help but wonder. Was it a genius move, tapping into the glory of Willis’ iconic films, or simply a nostalgic wink to draw in those ‘90s vibes?

Either way, Johnson’s quick wink to Willis’ iconic role got people talking—like, really talking. Whether it’s a clever callback to a classic or just a smooth trick to ride on Willis’ coattails, guess we’ll see if this playful moment pays off in the long run!

Yesterday, Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson joined stars, filmmakers and special guests at the Lanikūhonua Cultural Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii for Moana 2's world premiere.
The event kicked off with a special performance led by Tiana Nonosina Liufau, Kayla Faʻamaligi, and Polynesian creatives honouring the Pacific peoples, cultures, and traditions that gave voice to the heart of the Moana story. A few critics were also in attendance, meaning we now have some early reactions.
Of course, the fact that at least some of the reporters listed below were flown out to Hawaii by Disney for this splashy event means that, as with most social reactions, you should probably take them with a pinch of salt.
It's also worth pointing out that Disney appears less confident in the sequel because the review embargo doesn't lift until the day before Moana 2 arrives in theaters. That's extremely late for one of the studio's high-profile movies.

Do you smell what The Rock is cooking while on the set of Disney’s live-action remake of Moana? It smells like sweat-stained rubber mats, Creatine, and tequila. For real, though, I’ve had Dwayne Johnson’s tequila, and it’s delicious. Allow me to get to the point. Photos from the set of Disney’s live-action remake of Moana are making the rounds thanks to The Daily Mail, and people are questioning whether Johnson’s physique for the upcoming film is genuine. This query sounds ridiculous. Or does it?
While Dwayne Johnson is undoubtedly a behemoth who tirelessly works to keep himself tip-top, there’s something strange about his proportions in the newly leaked set photos. I’m not saying The Rock is wearing a body suit for sure, but his costume strategically hides telltale areas of the body that would otherwise reveal body suit seams. He could easily...

It's been a quiet month or so at the box office, with stuff like "Red One" helping to hold theaters over until "Wicked" and "Gladiator II" arrive. That dueling set of blockbusters figures to potentially deliver another Barbenheimer situation, which will help usher in the holiday season with a bang. To help further make this Thanksgiving one to remember, Disney's "Moana 2" hits theaters right before Turkey Day, meaning it will have an extended, five-day window to deliver the goods across a long holiday weekend. And it looks like the animated sequel is indeed going to deliver the goods.
Disney's "Moana 2" is currently expected to pull in between $125 and $135 million across that five-day, Wednesday to Sunday stretch according to early tracking, per The Hollywood Reporter. That falls right in line with more recent projections, which have the film pulling in between $77 and $89 million over the usual Friday to Sunday stretch,...

A set of AI-generated adverts from The Coca-Cola Company could point the way to a grim future of soulless, synthesised film remakes. Yay!
Because nothing captures the spirit of Christmas like creepy, home knit-clad spectres from our deepest nightmares, The Coca-Cola Company has embraced the power of generative AI for its 2024 festive marketing campaign.
Or, more accurately, the firm has commissioned San Francisco-based studio Silverside to create a new version of the Coca-Cola Holiday Caravan commercial which first debuted in 1995.
Like any worthwhile nightmare, everything looks familiar at first: the wintry landscapes, the Coca-Cola trucks trundling through the snow, the catchy choral chant of ‘Holidays are coming’. Gradually, though, a sense of unease settles in like a morning frost. The smiles on those seemingly normal human faces don’t quite meet the eyes; the scale of a glass Cola bottle appears to change size between shots. And why does it...

As we first reported on Toonado.com, a second wave of set photos for the upcoming live-action Moana remake has just surfaced (via Mail Online) and these feature a much closer look at Catherine Laga'aia's title character and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Maui.
After seeing the blurry shots from yesterday, many fans quickly pointed out that it looked like the pro wrestler had somehow bulked up to portray a real-life version of the character he first voiced for 2016's Disney Animation hit.
Well, it turns out the actor has donned a muscle suit. This is a little ironic, particularly as many felt Johnson was taking a shot at Zachary Levi for wearing one in Shazam! while promoting Black Adam (he captioned a social media post by saying, "this is not your typical DC or Marvel padded muscle suit").

With “Moana 2,” “Wicked,” and “Gladiator II” on the lineup, this Thanksgiving holiday is shaping up to be a record-breaking one for the box office, with domestic revenue expected to soar past $300 million over the five-day period.
“Gladiator II,” “Wicked,” and “Moana 2” are set to bring something for everyone to theaters this Thanksgiving, according to one studio exec. “When there’s a great variety, the business thrives.” These three films are expected to fuel the biggest Thanksgiving box office ever, providing a bright spot in a year slowed by labor strikes and delays from the pandemic.
Thanksgiving 2018 holds the current record for the five-day period, bringing in $315.6 million thanks to hits like “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Creed II.” This year, experts believe that the record will fall.
“Moana 2,” set to release Wednesday, Nov. 27, is projected to earn between $125 million and $150 million in its first five days, possibly even more.

As Ridley Scott and his high-profile Gladiator II cast — including Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal and Connie Nielsen — walked the red carpet during the Nov. 18 Los Angeles premiere, a makeshift wall prevented them from seeing an enormous Christmas tree perched at the entrance of the Ovation Hollywood mall adjacent to the Tcl Chinese Theatre.

By all accounts, the three films are expected to fuel the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in history in terms of overall revenue, a rare bright spot in the post-pandemic era.

The self-proclaimed "greatest demi-god of all the Pacific Islands" is back in action, but Maui's looking awfully different from the last time audiences saw him in "Moana." The animated movie instantly became a box office hit upon release in 2016, though it's taken quite a while for Disney to figure out what to do with the titular character and her overall storyline next. That surprising amount of hesitance led to the studio scrapping its plans for a streaming series and instead retrofitting the show into a feature-length sequel with the upcoming "Moana 2." However, that's not the only high-profile project currently in the works.
Following the pattern set by a myriad of live-action remakes of Disney animated classics (not to mention the recent trailer debut of "How to Train Your Dragon"), moviegoers can now expect a live-action "Moana" to hit theaters relatively soon ... and we've already received our first unofficial...

Despite receiving largely mixed reviews for many of its live-action remakes, Disney continues to forge ahead with more adaptations of its most beloved classics. Next up is 2026's Moana, a reimagining of the 2016 movie that follows this Thanksgiving's animated Moana 2.
While Auli'i Cravalho will continue voicing the Disney Animation Moana, she'll pass the reins to newcomer Catherine Laga'aia for this live-action redo, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reprising his role as Maui.
Cravalho's recasting makes sense due to her age, though it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the character given the way the pro wrestler made the demigod his own.
As we first reported on Toonado.com, a first look at Johnson on set alongside Laga'aia has surfaced on social media today. Rocking the tattoos, long hair, and grass skirt, the actor looks like he's stepped straight out of the 2016 animated movie...even if it is a little...

Jon Stewart could barley hold back his frustration and confusion when talking about President Joe Biden’s recent trip to the Amazon rainforest, a first for any American president. Prior to the segment, the “Daily Show” host detailed the controversial cabinet picks Trump has made so far and called for a Democratic response.
“How will the head of this party, the outgoing President, man the ramparts during this challenging and fraught peaceful transition to fascism?” Stewart asked before cutting to a clip of Biden in the rainforest.
“What the f–k?” Stewart screamed. “In the middle of this he disappears into the rainforest? Starring in what appears to be four Pixar movies in one mixed together?”
Barely holding back his laughter, Stewart said that “clearly” “Up” is one of the movies in question, a swipe at Biden’s age. He also added in “Encanto” and “Moana” due to the tropical...

We're in the midst of a bit of a down period for theaters. "Venon: The Last Dance" has ruled the past few weekends, with smaller offerings like "Heretic" and "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" doing what they can to fill the void. Dwayne Johnson's "Red One" is also coming to get the Christmas season box office started, even if it won't light the charts on fire. But this is truly a calm before the storm moment if ever there were such a thing, as a trio of big movies are just around the corner to help turn things around. However, the biggest of the bunch may not be Disney's big animated sequel "Moana 2" or Ridley Scott's historical epic "Gladiator II." Rather, "Wicked" is positioned to become not just one of the biggest movies of the winter season, but also maybe one of the biggest movies of 2024 overall.

In 2016, Jared Bush was part of the production team for two major releases from Walt Disney Animation: Zootopia and Moana.
With the first, Bush was co-director and co-writer of the animated film set in a city of animals, following a sly fox and a rookie bunny cop who must work together to uncover a conspiracy.
With the second, one of the biggest successes of the Modern Era of the century-old studio, he was the screenwriter for this musical story that continues to break streaming records to this day, following a young girl on a mission to save her people.
In Moana: A Sea of Adventures, we follow Moana’s journey as she meets the powerful demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the ocean on an incredible and deeply musical adventure.

In the summer of 2023, we had “Barbenheimer,” and the holiday season of 2024 will have “Glicked” as Gladiator II star Paul Mescal has dubbed the release date of November 22, on which the Jon M. Chu musical adaptation and the Ridley Scott sequel will debut in theaters together.
Several films will arrive before and in the wake of the latest box office showdown including Disney’s Moana 2, which almost went up against Wicked before the first part of the film duology shifted earlier to the same Friday as Gladiator II.

Dwayne Johnson was headlining one family movie after another following the launch of his acting career with 2002’s “The Scorpion King.” He was successful, but he yearned for more. A lot more. Johnson told his agents that he wanted to be bigger than Will Smith. When they expressed skepticism, he got rid of them.
As reported in Johnson’s new GQ cover story: “He surveyed the landscape, noted who was at the top of it. And he went to his agents and said, despite whatever recent setbacks he’d experienced, he had an idea, or simply an ambition: He wanted to have the career of George Clooney or Will Smith. But bigger, perhaps, or better. When his agents seemed skeptical of this plan, he found new agents.”
“That was the idea back then,” Johnson now told GQ looking back at his plan, admitting that he did think “I could be bigger” than Clooney and Smith.

Dwayne Johnson’s First Dream Before Becoming a WWE Icon Would’ve Drastically Changed His Entire Life
Dwayne Johnson is most popularly known as the professional wrestler who became a movie star, but he could have had a different career had he become successful in achieving his first dream. It’s difficult to imagine seeing him in a different type of sport other than wrestling, but the Fast & Furious star actually ventured once into a football career.

His stint in the said sport was short-lived, but it was a significant part of his younger self that served as an inspiration in pursuing his own minor league. So, why did Johnson give up playing football?

So, the whole being late to set and peeing in bottles thing?
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says a report about his disrespectful behavior on the Red One set was partly true, but he and his collaborators are denying certain aspects and insisting it wasn’t nearly as bad as it all sounds.
In a new GQ profile, Johnson was asked about being frequently late to set (a story in The Wrap said he was late an average of seven-to-eight hours per day, and missed several days of shooting, which inflated the cost of the $250 million production by $50 million).
“Yeah, that happens,” Johnson replied. “But not that amount, by the way. That was a bananas amount. That’s crazy. Ridiculous.” He added that the controversy overall was “bullshit.”
Jake Kasdan, who directed the film, was quoted as saying that Johnson “never missed a day of work ever. He has a lot going on.

With just weeks until Moana 2 hits theaters, Disney has shared the highly anticipated sequel's lead single, titled "Beyond."
The powerful new track emphasizes Moana's desire, and trepidation, to answer the call of the ocean. "What lies beyond?" Moana voice actor Auli’i Cravalho belts. "Under skies I've never seen / Will I lose myself between my home and what's unknown?"
"If I go beyond leaving all I love behind / With the future of our people still to find / Can I go beyond?" the ballad continues.
"Beyond," performed by Auli'i Cravalho and written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, is the first featured track from Moana 2. And it marks the first song that audiences can hear from the movie's new composers Barlow and Emily Bear. The duo took over for Lin-Manuel Miranda after he composed the soundtrack for the first film.

With a possible record-breaking opening weekend, Disney Animation’s “Moana 2” is set to make box office history this Thanksgiving. Based on what the movie business knows, the cartoon sequel could make between $125 million and $135 million over the five-day holiday weekend, more than any previous Thanksgiving animated film record.
This movie stands out because it went from being an online series to a movie theater release, which wasn’t expected. The project went through a huge change after CEO Bob Iger took back control. D23 Brazil 2024 is set to feature appearances by Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars as attendees line up their schedules for the various panels taking center stage.
August's D23 Fan Expo was no small outing for Disney thanks to major announcements from Marvel, Star Wars, and the company as a whole. From Daredevil to Din Djarin, and from Moana to the Incredibles, fans from all fandoms had something to celebrate.
Disney stole the show partially with footage from some of its biggest upcoming projects (see the description for the D23 Daredevil: Born Again trailer here). Now, as 2024 comes to a close, the studio shows no signs of slowing down with plenty in store for 2025.

Disney Cruise Line’s latest ship, the Disney Treasure, left to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Eemshaven, Netherlands to Port Canaveral last week. Now Disney is sharing a look, and listen, to one of the seven new ship horn musical numbers the Treasure can “perform.” Although, we only know three of the seven songs so far.
What songs with the Disney Treasure horn play?
Among the new arrangements for the ship are the Haunted Mansion’s “Grim Grinning Ghosts” song. Which is in honor of the ships Haunted Mansion Parlor.
Pixar’s “Remember Me” from “Coco” for the new Plaza de Coco restaurant.
“A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” which is meant to tie back to the Disney Treasure’s Grand Hall.
Here is an example of “A Whole New World.”

“Moana 2” is finally releasing later this month, and it looks like it could break some Thanksgiving holiday records!
Currently, the film seems to be set to have the biggest five-day Thanksgiving holiday box office ever.
Estimates for the Wednesday-Sunday holiday block put the film at over $135 million. This would beat the holiday total for “Frozen 2″back in 2019.
Ticket pre-sales already seem to indicate that “Moana 2” is outperforming the pre-sale tickets for both “Inside Out 2” and “The Incredibles.”
“Moana 2” was originally set to be a Disney+ show, but Disney made the right decision to turn the show into a film for 2024.
2023 was a disastrous box office period for the Walt Disney Company. Most of their films bombed, and only a couple broke even or made some money.

As we told you recently, Disney’s Moana 2 is heading to the best five-day opening ever at the Thanksgiving box office. We gave the six-weekend projection from Quorum, and this morning tracking service Nrg — which reports three-weekend-out forecasts — is saying the Polynesian princess sequel is going to clear $135M over Wednesday-Sunday. That would best the record $125M five-day (not opening) Thanksgiving haul of Frozen 2 ($125M) and the $93.5M five-day opening of Frozen.
Presales for Moana 2 are ahead of Inside Out 2 and Incredibles 2, which opened to $154.2M and $182.6M (3-day), respectively. Tickets went on sale October 28 for the pic starring Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson.

Walt Disney Animation’s Moana 2 is sailing toward a record-shattering $125 million-$135 million opening over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday corridor, according to tracking data shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel opens Nov. 27, a Wednesday. The long holiday weekend is one of the most lucrative times of the year in terms of moviegoing, and this year’s feast is shaping up to be a bonanza, between Moana 2, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s musical spectacle Wicked. The latter two tentpoles unfurl Nov. 22 in order to get a jump on the holiday, and are likewise tracking to strong numbers, potentially meaning that holiday revenue could hit an all-time high, led by Moana 2. That’s welcome news for struggling theater owners; this week AMC Theatres chief Adam Aron said Moana 2 could be bigger than Pixar/Disney’s Inside Out 2.

To paraphrase Wesley Snipes as Blade in this summer’s blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine”: There’s only one “Barbenheimer.” There’s only ever gonna be one “Barbenheimer.”
Hollywood might never replicate the je ne sais quoi that prompted the explosion of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” double features, turning the box office battle between two very different films into a once-in-a-generation cinematic event. But multiplex owners are hoping that “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” achieve something close as the pink-and-green musical and the Colosseum-set action epic land in theaters on Nov. 22.
“It won’t happen in the same way, but the conversation around ‘Wicked’ and ‘Gladiator’ is reminiscent of ‘Barbenheimer,’” says Shawn Robbins, Fandango’s director of movie analytics. “They’re fueling each other.”
Whether or not “Glicked” is the second coming of “Barbenheimer,” there’s mounting pressure on Thanksgiving movies — Disney’s “Moana 2” swims to the big screen on Nov.

Moana was a sensation when it first hit cinemas in 2016. Introducing a stunning new Disney princess representing an ethnic background and showcasing the narrative of a marginalized yet magnificent culture rarely explored in modern Hollywood, the film soared to global success. Various interpretations floated around concerning the underlying messages in Disney films, a common […]

Here’s what made The Rock a total box office king (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson didn’t just step into Hollywood—he slammed in, blending WWE flair with movie star charisma. From The Mummy Returns to Fast & Furious, he brought his wrestling roots, and fans went wild every time he dropped those iconic moves, reminding everyone that The People’s Champ never forgets his roots.
One of Johnson’s earliest crossovers from the ring to the screen happened in Star Trek: Voyager. In the sixth season’s episode “Tsunkatse,” he appeared as the Pendari Champion, squaring off against Seven of Nine. And what did he do? He casually dropped his signature move, Rock Bottom, slamming his opponent to the mat with a grin, saying, “Yes, I’m that guy.”
