Russian animation specialists Wizart has closed multiple sales on its autumn market slate including an eye-catching two-film deal with the UK’s Altitude Film Distribution.
Altitude has bought The Snow Queen: Mirrorlands and The Snow Queen: Fire And Ice, the third and fourth titles in the Snow Queen franchise. Fire And Ice will be a home entertainment release, aimed at the Christmas market in November. Mirrorlands will follow as a theatrical release in February 2020.

St Petersburg International Media Forum closes inaugural edition with world premiere of Serena.
Francois Ozon’s latest feature The New Girlfriend was voted as the Best of the Fest by the audience at the inaugural edition of the St Petersburg International Media Forum (Spimf) which closed on Friday evening with the world premiere of Susanne Bier’s Serena, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.
However, neither director Bier, nor any of the talent were in St Petersburg for the film, which Volgafilm will be releasing in Russian cinemas on October 30.
Although there was no formal competition for Spimf’s film programme, a jury of local film critics was formed to give awards for what they regarded as the best film and TV series showing in the 2014 line-up.

Russian animation house Wizart Animation has finalised Toronto deals for The Snow Queen (2012) and The Snow Queen 2 (2014) for Australia, New Zealand and Africa.
The films will be released by Universal Pictures in Australia and New Zealand following an acquisition by Odin’s Eye Entertainment while TWC (Transworld Television Corporation) has picked up The Snow Queen for Africa (excluding South Africa).
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale and co-produced by Timur Bekmambetov, the franchise follows a troll whose victory over the Snow Queen gives his fellow trolls a taste for freedom.

The Russian Cinema Fund, with backing from the Russian Ministry of Culture, presented 18 new Russian productions at a Cannes Market showcase yesterday.
The presentations were grouped into three sections: animations currently in production, completed features and works-in-progresss.
Highlights included hit animation sequel The Snow Queen 2 (already selling well for Wizart); Wizart’s new animation property Sheep and Wolves; Ralph Fiennes starrer Two Women (sold by Rezo) [pictured]; the English-language thriller Bathory; and Orlean from The Horde director Andrey Proshkin.

UK distributor Signature Entertainment’s acquisition of 3D animation feature The Snow Queen and its sequel was one of several deals signed at the Russian Cinema stand at this year’s European Film Market (Efm).
Signature will give a wide theatrical release to Wizart Animation’s sequel The Snow Queen 2: The Snow King in February 2015.
A UK TV and DVD premiere of the first film, produced by Timur Bekmambetov, will precede this in October 2014.
South Korea’s Cinema Republic has also picked up the sequel for a release in December 2014 after having taken more than $1.5m at the box office with the first film in 2013. Proficinema noted that Cinema Republic is planning a large scale merchandising and promotional drive to accompany the release.
