Taylor Sheridan & Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-Nominated Movie Becomes Netflix Global Hit 10 Years Later
Taylor Sheridan and Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-nominated movie has become a global Netflix hit a decade after its release. The Canadian director started his career with four French-language films, including Incendies, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature. From there, Villeneuve transitioned into English-language movies with Prisoners and Enemy, but gained further recognition for his sci-fi films Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and Dune: Part Two – which earned a total of 28 Oscar nominations and won 11.

Taylor Sheridan has a complete disrespect for one of my treasured possessions: downtime. In just seven years, Sheridan has created eight TV shows resulting in 164 episodes, the overwhelming majority of which he wrote entirely himself. Let that soak in for a moment. Here’s a quantitative but not qualitative comparison: Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul combined were shot over 14 years and total 125 episodes. That’s still a day-and-a-half of television short of Sheridan’s output.
And here’s the thing: All eight shows are hits, something that not even...

Was Josh Brolin almost killed over a cigarette? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
In his memoir, From Under the Truck, the Dune and Avengers star, Josh Brolin, revealed a terrifying 2013 encounter – one that left him stabbed in the stomach over something as trivial as a cigarette.
It happened fast. A stranger approached him, asking for money or a smoke. Brolin refused. The next thing he knew, a blade was sinking into his abdomen. But luck, or rather, biology, was on his side. “The umbilical ligament is the densest ligament in the body and it slowed the knife down enough to stop it from hitting any vitals,” he recalled in a People interview (via News 18). The Marvel star barely made it out alive, but his brush with death didn’t stop there.
While waiting for an ambulance, his wife, Kathryn Boyd Brolin, handed him the phone. His instinct? To call his ex-wife, Alice Adair.

Taylor Sheridan has been nothing but gracious with his talent for storytelling to the point where Hollywood may be slaughtering its golden goose, aka Sheridan, by milking him dry of original ideas. However, stagnation is equivalent to death in the film and television business, and Sheridan is too deep in the trenches to get out now without sacrificing a vital part of himself.

With more than half a dozen projects actively in motion at Paramount+, Taylor Sheridan would have to trade an arm and a leg to pull out of his deal with the studio now. Strangely enough, the overworked, overwhelmed writer-director seems to be operating just fine under pressure. So much so that he is busy carving out yet another spin-off within the Yellowstone universe.
And there is one particular actor within that universe that Sheridan is happy to work with time and again.

Taylor Sheridan’s redefining the Yellowstone universe. While most spinoffs thrive on nostalgia, one of his creations was built for a whole new audience. No prior knowledge of the Dutton saga? No problem. Sheridan wanted this series to stand on its own, letting fresh viewers dive in without feeling lost.

It’s a bold move, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s the mastermind behind TV’s biggest neo-Western empire. So, which Yellowstone spinoff was made for newcomers?

Love it or hate it, 1923 isn’t about to sugarcoat history. Season 2 is doubling down on one of Taylor Sheridan’s most controversial storytelling choices, and Madison Rogers is stepping in to defend it. While some fans argue it’s too brutal, Rogers insists it adds authenticity to the show’s raw, unfiltered depiction of the era.

Since finding his groove in television with Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan has shown little interest in straying away from Westerns. Although he experimented with shows, including Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown, Westerns have primarily been his forte, as it seems Landman will be his next major endeavor after Yellowstone‘s conclusion.

Although season 2 is yet to be officially greenlit, given its strong viewership on Paramount Plus and Demi Moore’s previous comments, it seems almost inevitable, and it also has the potential to ameliorate Moore’s Oscar loss.

Meghan Markle’s delayed debut as a lifestyle goddess; a new epic series adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s The Leopard; the second spinoff movie in the fast expanding SpongeBob movie universe; a new season motorsports greatest docuseries; Anthony and Joe Russo’s latest big-budget feature; and a screwball murder mystery from Shondaland are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in March.
Finally debuting on March 4th is Netflix’s lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, which is hosted and executive produced by Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. The show was originally slated to launch on Jan. 15, but was postponed due to the Los Angeles wildfires. The unscripted series, which was filmed at a farmhouse in Montecito, California, is a blend of practical how-tos and candid interviews with prominent people. It’s Oscars weekend, which means that very soon there won’t be any more contenders to stream, only winners and past nominees. We have some suggestions if you’re looking for award-contender movies to watch on streaming or video on demand at the last minute before the Oscars this weekend. Our list includes an Oscar-nominated top pick that recently became available on subscription streaming; two other new releases on VOD, one of which is an Academy Award nominee; a past Oscar winner that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick; and a past Oscar nominee that’s on Netflix for the first time.
Top pick: September 5
Writers Moritz Binder, Tim Fehlbaum (who also directs), and Alex David are up for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for this journalism thriller’s tight script. It’s the film’s only nomination, but it’s deserved.

Wind River is a monumental piece of film history for more than one reason. It is not only Taylor Sheridan’s first directorial feature film but also The Weinstein Company’s last movie before going defunct in 2018. As for the film itself, it puts every generic Hollywood movie to shame on the basis of its plot, characters, setting, directorial prowess, and socio-political themes.
Wind River (2017) [Credit: The Weinstein Company]
Sheridan has gained credibility among fans and critics alike for unapologetically shedding light on difficult subjects that Hollywood usually balks at. While he already has more than a dozen projects under his belt as a screenwriter in just a decade, the frontier trilogy remains Sheridan’s best work to date.

As always, Netflix brings the goods with the arrival of the new month. There aren't any new blockbusters on the schedule today; those are coming later this month. But a lot of great movies and shows hit the screen today.
Yeah, that's not exactly the best sales pitch, I know. But there's no shortage of star power, both in front and behind the camera. Ewan McGregor, Gene Hackman, Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Benicio del Toro, and Harrison Ford star, while filmmakers like Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, and Taylor Sheridan craft the vision.
There are several modern classics on the bill, including a trio that are regarded as some of the best of their respective genres. Crime drama, science fiction, and war movies all get their due today. There are some originals, to be sure. A pair of anime series make their Netflix debut, as well as a Korean rom-com romance series.

Before he was writing half the shows on Paramount+, Taylor Sheridan was an actor. The man behind shows like "Yellowstone" and "Tulsa King" and the scripts for films including "Sicario" and "Hell or High Water" cut his teeth with screen work, a pastime he occasionally returns to when he needs someone to play, say, a cool cowboy who's dating Bella Hadid.
Years before he became known as a Hollywood cowboy, I knew Sheridan as a mysterious man named Danny Boyd in the plucky teen detective show "Veronica Mars," and as the hate-worthy cop Deputy David Hale on FX's "Sons of Anarchy." Those may have been two of Sheridan's most high-profile TV roles, but they're far from his only acting credits. He's had bit parts going all the way back to "Walker, Texas Ranger" in 1995, and can be seen in one-off roles in shows like "CSI," "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,...

He's had bit parts going all the way back to "Walker, Texas Ranger" in 1995, and can be seen in one-off roles in shows like "CSI," "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,...

Revisiting Josh Brolin & Denzel Washington’s Intense Moment On American Gangster Set (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Denzel Washington’s commitment to method acting almost led to a fight with Josh Brolin while filming American Gangster. Brolin, unaware that Washington was in character, unknowingly stepped into a tense moment that could have escalated quickly. Looking back on the experience, Brolin made it clear that he and Washington are on great terms now. But on set? Different story.
“Yeah, we almost got into a fight… Denzel was a little late to set, and there was a whole thing there,” he recalled, per In Depth With Graham Bensinger. “I was trying to remember the structure, and then we rehearsed. It wasn’t that many lines, mostly mine. And I’m supposed to be Super confident. It’s Denzel Washington, man. It’s, like, not easy. You’re just some actor who they’re trying out,...

Over the course of an on-screen career spanning more than two decades, Emily Blunt has given some of the most top-notch performances across numerous genres, cementing her position among the greatest A-listers in Hollywood’s entertainment industry. Be it leading an action flick or a horror-thriller one, she has proven she can perfectly bring her excellence to it all.

However, as exceptional of an actress as she has proven herself to be, Blunt hasn’t really earned all that much official recognition from the Academy for the same. In fact, this stands true despite her star-studded resume that includes her having worked with some of the greatest directors of all time — one that even stars like Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence would dream of.

Taylor Sheridan never minced words, but if you thought his Kevin Costner feud was brutal, his Yellowstone track record with vegans was something else. The man practically turned plant-based diets into villain-origin stories.

Be it cattle ranchers staring down tofu enthusiasts or cowboy wisdom dismissing quinoa like it was a personal insult, Sheridan’s scripts never missed a chance to remind audiences where his loyalties lay.

For all his faults, Taylor Sheridan can still write a story like none other in Hollywood. After the television industry’s long stagnating period, Yellowstone managed to mark a shift among the modern audience who had been thirsting for a taste of something foreign and untested. The reprisal of Westerns was nothing new, yet Sheridan’s writing made it both experimental and dangerous.

After its spectacular success, Yellowstone gave way to two more integer-heavy prequel spin-offs – 1883 and 1923 – which built on the legacy of the Duttons. Meanwhile, Taylor Sheridan’s increasing ambition toppled the writer-director off his game somewhere beyond Yellowstone‘s post-Season 3 arc. As the number of projects on his roster increased, so began the decline of Sheridan’s golden era.

Taylor Sheridan is in a position now where he can call the shots on just about anything he puts his name on. You'd think, then, that in his first big career-changing gig with Hollywood after leaving "Sons of Anarchy," where he was taking a risk behind the camera rather than in front of it, he'd be a little more cautious.
Instead, 2015's "Sicario" -- which still stands as the best Sheridan movie he wrote but didn't direct -- endured a fair amount of push and pull between Sheridan and the film's producers. This was particularly true when it came to the movie's ending, in which the hitman Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) joins his target, Fausto Alarcon (Julio Cesar Cedillo) and his family, for their last meal. Apparently, had the movie's backers gotten their way, Alejandro would have proven to be a a less violent and more forgiving character than...

Few actors’ screen presence reverberates with such genuine intensity as Benicio del Toro. Like Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington, Toshiro Mifune, Mads Mikkelsen, and so on. I feel Benecio del Toro is almost always good, irrespective of the quality of the film built around his character. Born in Puerto Rico on February 19, 1967, to lawyer parents, Benicio del Toro was a basketball player in school. Benicio del Toro was studying business at the University of California, but his interest in acting soon made him drop out and study acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory with Arthur Mendoza. In the late 1980s, Benicio del Toro started appearing in TV shows like Miami Vice and Private Eye.
Benecio del Toro was recognized as a promising performer in his second movie role, where he played Dario, a vicious enforcer of a drug kingpin in Timothy Dalton’s James Bond movie License to Kill (1989). Though the...

Will The Mad Titan return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take his revenge on Earth's Mightiest Heroes?
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are shaping up to me massive MCU events, and the latter, in particular, could easily wind up being the most ambitious superhero movie ever made.
Even though only a handful of characters have been confirmed to appear (and even then only via trade reports), the movie is expected to feature a new roster of Earth's Mightiest Heroes (the Thunderbolts* team are rumored to form the basis of these New Avengers) along with the surviving members of the original team.
We have also heard that at least some variants will be involved, and could form a team of "Evil Avengers."

Taylor Sheridan is one of the most popular filmmakers and screenwriters working in the industry now. He hit it big with the neo-Western Yellowstone, which he created and wrote most episodes of, leading him to create several successful shows such as Tulsa King, Landman, and more. He was also Oscar-nominated for Hell or High Water.
Before Sheridan hit it big in Hollywood and the TV industry, he was an actor and had a regular role in the show Sons of Anarchy. However, he quickly grew disillusioned and decided to quit the business before pivoting to become a screenwriter. While he never planned on it, he revealed that he tried to make it in Hollywood in a different way.

For a long time, Kevin Costner had commanded Hollywood’s new frontier of Western cinema, be it through the lens of classics like Wyatt Earp or period crime thrillers about 20th-century outlaws like The Highwaymen. The actor’s string of poor luck in Hollywood since the late 90s defined his fall from grace and his insistence on not doing a sequel prevented his rise back up again.

After spending nearly two decades simmering in relative obscurity, it was Taylor Sheridan’s 21st-century neo-Western epic, Yellowstone that turned Kevin Costner into a legacy maker. For the longest time, Taylor Sheridan was in a state of deep hibernation, scraping out a living as an actor when his real talents lay elsewhere. After 20 years of his acting career essentially made him feel creatively suffocated, Sheridan took to the page and began to weave together stories of profound value to the industry as well as the audience.

Taylor Sheridan does not lack for chutzpah. The Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of "Hell or High Water" kicked his career into overdrive seven years ago when he launched the new-Western sensation "Yellowstone" on the Paramount Network. Since then, he's been a one-man television hit machine with "Yellowstone" spinoffs "1883" and "1923," as well as "Mayor of Kingstown," "Tulsa King," "Lioness" and "Landman." He is not a man to whom you say "no." I mean, you can say it, but you do so at your peril because the project you just shot down will likely wind up being a smash hit for a competitor.
Sheridan was just a year into building his "Yellowstone" empire when, being one of the busier bees in Hollywood, he hired himself out to rewrite the screenplay for an adaptation of Michael Koryta's thriller novel "Those Who Wish Me Dead." The tale of a reclusive smokejumper who finds herself...

There’s a saying that goes, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Yet, far too often, people look at the outward signs of a person’s beliefs, and, with one quick brushstroke, label an entire group of individuals. But what happens when someone dares to peel back the layers and show the gritty truth beneath?
Taylor Sheridan, the unapologetic Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind Hell or High Water, has boldly taken on this very challenge, all while exposing a silent undercurrent of rural America that often goes unnoticed—or worse, misjudged.

Through his film, Sheridan highlights the real struggles of people in small towns, who face economic hardship and neglect, and who feel their voices are ignored by mainstream elites. He criticizes how pundits like Bill Maher lump entire regions together, assigning political beliefs to people based on assumptions.

Before creating his television empire with the Yellowstone universe, writer-producer Taylor Sheridan gained recognition for penning the screenplay of the critically acclaimed 2015 action-thriller film Sicario. The film stars Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro in the lead roles. The two actors are responsible for making an important change to Sheridan’s script.

Once upon a time, Taylor Sheridan was the cowboy who rode in with all the fanfare, spurs clicking and hat tipped just right. Taylor Sheridan may be best known for Yellowstone but he cracked screenwriting on the big screen with films like Sicario and Hell or High Water. Featuring themes and genres that would later on define his style, the latter was a neo-Western starring Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine, which gave Sheridan his first Oscar nomination.
While the film was also nominated in several other categories including Best Picture, the year had tough competition with the likes of Damien Chazelle, Mike Mills, and more being strong contenders. Sheridan lost the Best Original Screenplay Award to Manchester by the Sea, and to be honest, that was deserved.

Taylor Sheridan is a miniature industry unto himself. He wrote the Oscar hopefuls "Sicario," "Hell or High Water," and "Wind River," as well as the thrillers "Without Remorse" and "Those Who Wish Me Dead." On TV, Sheridan has been blasting barn doors off with "Yellowstone" and its multiple spinoffs, as well as shows like "Tulsa King," "Lioness," and "Landman." These are in addition to a modest acting career that put Sheridan on TV shows like "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman," "Party of Five," "NYPD Blue," "Sons of Anarchy," and even "Star Trek: Enterprise." He also plays the supporting character of Travis Wheatley on "Yellowstone" and Charles on the prequel series "1883."
Sheridan has evolved into the modern torch-bearer for Western machismo, and he is often drawn into the dark hearts of manly men. He also seems to love crime stories, tales of criminals/lawmen, and conflicts that end with gunplay.

Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King became a massive hit, quickly earning a place among the best shows on Paramount+. But behind Sylvester Stallone’s portrayal of Dwight “The General” Manfredi lies a fascinating connection to real-life mafia history.
While Dwight’s tale of exile and power struggles in Tulsa may be fictional, his inspiration draws heavily from...

Ever had one of those movies that smacks you across the face with its message, and then leaves you thinking, “Wow, I didn’t expect that at all”? It’s like getting a cold drink of water on a hot day—it catches you off guard, but you can’t help but appreciate it.
Taylor Sheridan has a knack for creating such moments, pulling viewers into stories where the lines between right and wrong aren’t so neatly drawn. His work, particularly Sicario and Yellowstone, might get tagged as “conservative” by some critics, but that’s just a surface-level read. Sheridan doesn’t just toe the party line; he offers a mirror to reality, pushing you to confront uncomfortable truths.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Landman season 1, episode 10.The season finale of Landman was great, and it made one of writer Taylor Sheridan's upcoming projects even more exciting. The ending of Landman season 1 was quite a wild ride. Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) was kidnapped, tortured, and subsequently saved by the cartel. Cami Miller (Demi Moore) decided to gamble with Monty's (Jon Hamm) oil empire just before he died, and Cooper (Jacob Lofland) and Ariana (Paulina Chávez) redoubled their commitment to their budding relationship. The entire cast of Landman had something to do in the finale, and it was very satisfying to see.
While the season finale made a lot of people excited for Landman season 2, even though it isn't confirmed yet, there's another Taylor Sheridan project that it also paved the way for. Taylor Sheridan has quite a few upcoming movies and shows, and all of them include something to look for.

Taylor Sheridan has had an impeccable career trajectory, from being a broke and struggling actor to one of the most famous television creators. Sheridan, in a short amount of time, has gone on to receive critical acclaim from his films like Sicario and creating several critically well-acclaimed TV series.

But what really solidified his position was Yellowstone. While the Western drama might be the best revered of his works, there is one person who did not like it as much: Kevin Costner’s mother.

Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone debuted back in 2018 and since then the neo-Western drama has gone on to become no less than a television phenomenon. Drawing millions of views each season, the show has been the cornerstone of Sheridan’s talent.

Some shows grab you by the collar and pull you into their world, characters, and stories. Landman doesn’t just fail to do that; it actually shoves you out of its narrative and leaves you wondering what you just wasted your time on.
When I heard Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone, was coming back with a new show, I was pumped. And Landman, set in the heart of the Texas oil industry, had a cast of heavy hitters. Could be gold, right? Turns out, it’s more like a rusty, half-finished oil pump that makes a lot of noise but doesn’t really go anywhere.

It’s not that the potential isn’t there—it’s the execution that’s the issue. The show stumbles hard with a messy plot, lazy characters, and a cringe-worthy portrayal of issues that should have been...

One of Taylor Sheridan's earliest projects, Sicario, is currently available on Amazon Prime Video, and it's still superior to his work on Yellowstone. The Kevin Costner-led neo-Western kicked off in 2018, and despite a lukewarm reception to the first season, the series quickly became a hit, providing Paramount Network with a contender in the prestige television game. Until Yellowstone's ending in 2024, Taylor Sheridan's series was consistently one of the most-viewed shows in the world, resulting in multiple spinoff series and other high-budget television projects for Sheridan on Paramount+.
Taylor Sheridan has become a prolific success from Yellowstone, with his work essentially carrying Paramount+ on its back, giving it a chance against more prominent services like Netflix and Hulu, which have had far longer to accumulate libraries of original, exclusive content. Sheridan's TV shows include Tulsa King, 1923, and most recently, the Billy Bob Thornton-led oil industry drama, Landman.

Years before Taylor Sheridan cast himself as Travis Wheatley on "Yellowstone," he was often seen butting heads with Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) and his beloved but regularly law-breaking biker gang in "Sons of Anarchy." Kurt Sutter's series, which mixed "Hamlet" with hogs, cast Sheridan as strait-laced Deputy Chief David Hale, a regular thorn in the side of Teller and his crew. For a while, at least.
Staring down the Sons for 21 episodes, Hale was abruptly killed off in the third episode of season 3 (one of the best seasons of "Sons of Anarchy") during a drive-by at a funeral. Like so many deaths on the show, his offing was visceral, assuring audiences that he was well and truly done. According to Sheridan, the exit was his choice, and it all came down to a matter of numbers, both on call sheets and contracts.
