- Primary school teacher Sabine Schuster unexpectedly suffers a stroke during a theater rehearsal with her students. Doctors are able to save her life in the stroke unit of a hospital, but the path back to everyday life is difficult and uncertain. For Sabine's husband Stefan, a forester, nothing is as it was either. While Sabine has to laboriously relearn many things in rehab, such as speaking and walking, Stefan adapts the house in Ilmenau, Thuringia, to his wife's needs in the hope that the familiar surroundings will do her good. But Sabine is so disappointed by her condition that she initially resists everything that will help her recover. Out of shame, she avoids contact with her usual surroundings, including her best friends Anna and Paul. She misses her work as a teacher and hiking, a passion she shared with Stefan. Seemingly lost in the mill of the care system, the new caregiver Iryna, organized by Stefan, brings new hope with her very own, optimistic and demanding manner. She encourages the couple, who after 25 years of marriage were already faced with the question of how they could continue to have a happy relationship in the future, to communicate with each other. A very special hike up the couple's favorite mountain brings about a change. Sabine realizes that she has to fight to get her life back. From then on, she opens up to therapy and makes rapid progress. This also encourages her to continue working on her marriage with Stefan. Sabine also starts theater rehearsals with her students again, now at home. Soon Sabine will be able to climb her favorite mountain with Stefan under her own steam. The hope of a life like Sabine and Stefan had before the stroke seems within reach. Her relationship with Stefan is more intense again. Her relationship with her 24-year-old daughter Annika, who was even more uncertain about her future due to her mother's stroke, also relaxes. But then Sabine has a second attack. Now that Sabine and Stefan are faced with the possibility of not winning the battle against the disease, they have to ask themselves whether their love is still strong enough for a life together. Stefan seems to be losing courage.—ADR Das Erste
