Do you think there might exist a time when every single Stephen King novel or short story has been adapted for the stage or screen? It sure seems like it, not that I'm complaining! Deadline Hollywood recently revealed that another adaptation is in development, this one based on King's "Autopsy Room Four," a short work included in his Everything's Eventual collection.

According to the outlet, Autopsy Room Four will be directed by up-and-coming British filmmaker Ranjeet S. Marwa, whose previous short film, The Man Who Loved Flowers, was inspired by some of King's works. He also directed Spring Lakes and Dig Me No Grave, both of which have been picked up by distributors.

"Autopsy Room Four" was initially published in one of King's limited-edition collections in the late 1990s before being added to Robert Bloch's Psychos anthology. Then, in 2002, it was published as part of Everything's Eventual.

Horror movies have been with us for a very, very long time. This genre, despite inducing shock and fear among the viewers, is extremely popular, and starting with Alfred Hitchcock, some directors have made careers by making horrors. George Romero, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven are considered classics, while today, we have a series of new, young directors who are great in the genre.

And since we’re writing this in a period of year when horrors are even more popular than usual, we have found a very interesting report that has seemingly determined the scariest horror movie of all time based on objective scientific criteria.

Stephen King often takes to Twitter (I'm never going to call it that other thing) to give us timely movie and series recommendations, highlight under-the-radar gems, or simply express the joy of reading a good book. As one of the world's greatest authors, King intimately understands the inner workings of the horror genre, including themes that work best to provoke the human imagination and induce anxiety with the help of a sustained suspension of disbelief. The writer's horror-related recommendations have always been top notch; a few years back, King praised a 2016 supernatural horror film on Twitter and advised us to not watch it alone:

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.

Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Director André Øvredal has set up his next horror project, with Deadline reporting that Øvredal has signed on to direct an untitled horror movie for Walter Hamada’s 18hz Productions.

Deadline details in this week’s exclusive report, “Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess penned the script for the new project, which has a logline that’s being kept secret.”

Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) will also produce the untitled horror movie.

Via 18hz Productions, Hamada is slated to produce several mid-budget horror films for Paramount Pictures per year. Other projects in the works include Primate and Familiar.

Hamada, who recently left WB/DC, has a ton of horror cred from his time at New Line, producing countless horror movies including the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes as well as The Conjuring and its various spinoffs and the 2017 adaptation of It.

The Shudder streaming service and IFC Films, both of which are owned by AMC Networks, have secured a deal with boutique Blu-ray and DVD label Severin Films to put together eleven special edition physical media releases of some of the most popular Originals and licensed features in the Shudder and IFC Films library, Variety reports.

The announcement even reveals the titles of six of the eleven movies that will be receiving special edition physical media releases thanks to this deal: Joko Anwar’s 2017 horror mystery Satan’s Slaves (which was a remake of a 1980 film); Brandon Cronenberg’s 2012 feature directorial debut, the sci-fi horror film Antiviral; the 2015 Turkish horror film Baskin, directed by Can Evrenol; Franck Khalfoun’s 2012 Pov remake of the 1980 slasher classic Maniac; Douglas Buck’s 2006 remake of the 1972 Brian De Palma thriller Sisters; and André Øvredal’s 2016 horror thriller The Autopsy of Jane Doe.

Fantastic Pavilion, the genre business hub launched at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, announced a slew of deals closed at the venue this year, with L..A-based Severin Films, a boutique Blu-ray and DVD label, inking a pact to release eleven Special Edition physical discs of the most popular Originals and licensed features from horror subscription streamer Shudder and IFC Films.

Initial titles include Joko Anwar’s “Satan’s Slaves”; Brandon Cronenberg’s “Antiviral”; Can Evrenol’s “Baskin”; Franck Khalfoun’s 2012 remake of “Maniac”; Douglas Buck’s 2006 remake of “Sisters” and André Øvredal’s “The Autopsy of Jane Doe.”

The deal was brokered by Severin Film’s co-founder-ceo David Gregory, Shudder’s Vice President of Programming Sam Zimmerman, and AMC Networks Director of Content Sales Lucas Verga.

New deals on upcoming horror Terrifier 3.

The Coven has hired Toronto-based Anelle Dehghani as head of sales to kick off the year on a slate which includes Terrifier 3, the next instalment in the cult horror franchise.

Dehghani previously served as director of domestic distribution and international sales at Raven Banner, the genre specialist headquartered in Toronto, where she began her career more than a decade ago.

The executive has focused on bringing elevated genre films to the global market with titles such as The Autopsy Of Jane Doe, Tigers Are Not Afraid, and The Sadness.

The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.

The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.

Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:

1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.

Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.

“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.

“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

There are ominous clouds gathering over the opening weekend of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," which is rather appropriate for a film about a ship's crew who are doomed to become a mid-journey vampire snack. Made for a steep (for a horror movie) budget of $45 million, "Last Voyage of the Demeter" is set to fall short of expectations that were already set very low. Though Variety reported in the wake of Thursday previews that the film was heading for an opening weekend between $7 million and $9 million, Friday's numbers are now pointing to a debut of just $6.5 million, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker's "Dracula," the film was directed by André Øvredal, who has some great horror movies already under his belt, including "Troll Hunter," "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," and "The Autopsy of Jane Doe." "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" brings a chapter of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to new vitality. It pulses with agonizing kill sequences, doused in buckets of blood and torn flesh. Director André Øvredal, known for helming such films as "Trollhunter," "The Autopsy of Jane Doe," and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," smothers the screen with depth and brilliant detail. He doesn't waste a single frame, delivering enough visual storytelling to keep you compelled to dive further into a great, unholy abyss.

"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" stuns with gorgeous cinematography, a smattering of rain-drenched sequences of tension, and plenty of blood-curdling, fang-toothed images that'll haunt you forever. Credit should also be given to cinematographers Roman Osin and Tom Stern for their expertly-crafted work alongside Øvredal. Without them, the film would not contain such an impressive style as it does.

The eponymous ship in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is just as crucial to the story as its ill-fated crew and passengers. What begins as a routine charter carrying private cargo becomes a harrowing fight for survival as Dracula (Javier Botet) uses the isolated Demeter as feeding grounds.

Director André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) enlisted production designer Edward Thomas to bring the Demeter to life, imbuing the schooner with impressive scale and meticulous detail. Thomas is no stranger to epic-sized horror adventures; the production designer is responsible for the thrilling set pieces in Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Monster Hunter.

"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" might be the ideal stepping stone for younger horror fans not yet ready for the really intense stuff. The film came out in 2019, but it harkens back to creepy older family films like "The Watcher in the Woods" and "Return to Oz" -- that is, films that put their young protagonists in legitimately horrifying situations and left you wondering if they'd make it out okay. "Scary Stories" goes even further by having terrible things actually happen to its heroes. The only problem is it backtracks on this a little at the very end, tacking on a short epilogue that ties up some loose plot threads a little too neatly while also setting the stage for a sequel.

It’s now been four years since the release of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the long awaited feature film adaptation of the ’80s/’90s books written by Alvin Schwartz. The film was a success at the box office for Lionsgate, scaring up $104 million worldwide, so why haven’t we gotten a sequel yet? A follow-up was announced, but to date hasn’t come to fruition.

It’s also just plain the coolest preview for the upcoming horror movie we’ve seen to date, selling Demeter as Øvredal’s take on Alien… set on a ship in the ocean… with Dracula.

In the latest issue of Fangoria Magazine, The Last Voyage of the Demeter director André Øvredal explains that he wanted his version of Dracula to be “the most horrific, frightening depiction of Dracula that has ever been seen on screen.” He continues, “To do that, we needed a performer who could be agile and do these things that are superhuman.”

This desire led to Øvredal casting Javier Botet as Demeter’s Dracula, and the monstrous take on the horror icon is fully revealed in an official image gallery today.
