1944. The fighter plane regiment of commander Aleksandr Romanov is being transferred to Anapa to strengthen air units in the upcoming offensive on Crimea. During the air battle, Aleksandr manages to capture a valuable trophy - a newly modified German fighter. The enemy plane is sent to one of the design bureaus near Moscow, where work is underway on the new Soviet fighter, Yak-9U. By a fateful coincidence, Romanov himself soon ends up in the design bureau. Working on a new machine with a team of engineers and test pilots, Romanov lives with the dream of returning to the skies. Here he finds true love, regains faith in himself, and the opportunity to be at the front again in his regiment.
